Muay Thai is amazing. Learn the basics, drill, do regular, LIGHT sparring, and above all, be consistent. In time, you'll find that going 100% once in a while is absolutely doable if you need to.

This video was reassuring and I thank you for it. I am 41 and decided to take up Muay Thai. I have been doing private lessons mostly and have occasionally popped into group classes when time permits. I tried my hand at sparring this recent group lesson, I was able to get very few punches in and some kicks but mostly I was getting tagged. My natural instinct is to get discouraged but I have to remember what my Kru has been telling me about the years of experience it takes to truly master this art and build good habits.
@gggraeme
@gggraeme 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experience! So true, no one becomes a master overnight...or even in a few weeks or months. It's the repeated reps over and over and over, until finally your body can do everything without your mind having to think/figure it out first
@ArseniyShved
@ArseniyShved 2 ай бұрын
As I recently started sparring I got tagged a lot. However, sometimes after a spar, I'd think 'that was awful' and then my training partner/coach would compliment me and say that I did good. I think, part of the problem is, in our heads, we expect to land all our attacks, and dodge all their attacks. In reality as we begin sparring, we get tagged cleanly like 10 times per round, and land only 1. With just a bit of practice, the amount of clean strikes you eat halves, and the amount you land doubles, so it becomes more like 5 to 2. Which is still a lost round, but a hell lot better than 10 to 1 =) But even if I have a completely even round, in my head it feels like 'I did not dominate = it was awful'. Which is not how it works.

43 and started about 3 years ago at a Mixed martial arts gym every Thursday night and last year at a full on Muay Thai Gym because I wanted to train more days. Last week I planned to go 5 days since my kids were on Spring break and only managed 2! 😭😭 During the first Bag class of the week I pulled something in my low back with a kick to the bag but it felt better the next 2 days and I skipped 2 classes. The last Class I went to it was the same injury but worse this time. Again at the bag class. I seem to always get injured with just the bag and never too bad sparring(nose injury was the worst from sparring but nothing major)! Also I really felt like my kicks were finally really turning a corner to the best kicks I've ever done. I was getting it and then bam! I haven't gone all this week because the pain is too much. 😭😭 I don't plan on fighting ever but I like the fitness element and the people that train there as well as the coaches are all great people. Already missing it.

Very thoughtful video, thank you! I've been in the martial arts for a lifetime. I started with traditional karate but evolved into MMA. Muay Thai is an excellent fighting system, but dangerous to practice. Remember, you may be young enough to go really hard, but still old enough to get really hurt. PS. In that finishing sparring video, imo you keep your guard way too low. I believe in MT more weight should be on the rear leg with a lighter front leg to check kicks.

"Young enough to go really hard but still old enough to get really hurt" I think you put that perfectly! And yes I have a not-so-great habit of dropping my hands, but also looking down too much (in my mind I'm watching for dangerous kicks and covering my body and head together...but know it's not proper). I've gotten better over time but sometimes revert back if I'm under pressure. Thanks for the really insightful comment, it is much appreciated!

Your video is good. I feel like you spend a lot of time talking. It took you a few minutes to get through portioning out your chicken to freeze it. I started at 37 and been doing it for only 1.5 years How you describe being hit a lot suggests you possibly have a weak guard My coach taught us the Dutch style, which is more square rather than flared but is not as good for elbows. I don't compete so no matter A few things that helped me is watch a lot of sparring videos online, one championship, steal moves from people when sparring, don't neglect flexibility, warm up drills.. Even spend some days watching people spar and notice people's patterns

I used to train Muay Thai, until I got a knee in my arrow! ☠ Jokes aside, I started with 27, had a long break and here I go again with 38. I wouldn't say that my bruises need longer to heal, but I noticed that I need to invest more time into my physio-state and general athleticism. Butt hurts, hamstring hurts and then you get punch/kicked/kneed in sparring, which also needs some attention (or just time).

This is a wonderful story, and a great attitude to share, thank you! ^-^❤ This immediately brought back a memory for me, about 5 years ago I think; I was about 18yo, still at school, but doing my first internship, because I was obligated to as part of my course apparently. I was shy and anxious beyond belief, but I managed to get my dad to get me to his workplace, so thankfully I didn't have to reach out and send emails to random strangers. Still, I wasn't doing well. I was nervous, feeling out of place, and barely given any work. It was an IT course, so the internship revolved around that...but it ended up in me being given a computer, sat at the back of a room, and left to my own devices basically. I was supposed to figure out how to make a basic website or something, but...I couldn't focus. I ended up just doing other things on that PC, having fun, barely working. Eventually, my teachers called in to check on me. A woman answered, and when she was asked how I was doing, she walked over, looked at my screen- which, I don't remember exactly what it was, but I know I was having fun and didn't notice her coming-, and told them that "yeah, he's doing well", and I was bewildered by that, like...I clearly wasn't, but yet she said I was... And just like you, I never forgot that. I've adopted that mindset too, to try and go out of my way to not make others look bad, and I'm glad to hear you feel that way too :)
