It always peeeved me when "North American" really just referred to.... like, two countries, anyways. I was about to proposed "Can-American" as a term, but I think your solution is better. Just accept Canadian culture is really just American culture.

I'm from toronto and i have a theory about the racoon obsession. Around 9 years ago a racoon died and got left on the sidewalk. The city said they would come and clean it up but they didnt for the next 12 hours. First someone left a rose. Then a framed photo of a racoon. Then a card. Eventually it turned into some sort of vigil. I felt like ever since then, we became obsessed with racoons. Maybe in memory of that lil buddy that died in the summer of 2015 ❤

I love the idea of a fruit machine, measuring peoples pupils… Because think of all of the people who had never seen sexual activity before, their eyes would’ve widened with a shock whether they were interested or not. Anybody would have a reaction to being shown at a job interview for fuck sake. Great, now I’m gonna have to subscribe to your Canadian ass.

This is the story I've heard about the Blue Jays name: The team was originally owned by Labatt's whose most popular beer was Labatt's Blue. They thought the Blue Jays name would be shortened in newspapers to the Blues giving them millions in free advertising, but alas it was usually shortened to the Jays.

My biggest pet peeve about the dome is thay instead of putting a statue of joe carter, roy halliday, jose bautista or dave stieb, they instead built a statue of the guy who won capitalism.

Torontonian here. This place really has no identity. Bunch of try-hards and wanna-bes. We actually DID have an identity, before the real estate agents and mortgage brokers started calling this shithole a "World Class City". We were known as the Big Little City. It was nice. RIP.

Is there anything missing from the artist’s sticker collection?? Are you kidding? The MOST ICONIC and CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT piece is missing - that being of course, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Not only an Original 6 franchise, not only the 2nd most winningest professional hockey team in history, it was long the only sports team in the city. Toronto is widely considered to be the mecca of hockey globally and make no mistake, the city is the house that hockey built. The Leafs have a history that is intertwined and inseparable from the city; it even follows the city’s demographic lineage throughout the years. You simply cannot have a legitimate collection of any Toronto souvenir/memorabilia/icons without the most important piece - the Leafs.

I mean yeah you can say they're significant and all but I guess after so many decades of failures and disappointment the guy who was selling them just wanted to forget the Maple leafs even exist. Anyways now that you're talking about hockey LFG PANTHERS!!!! WEEEE ARE THE CHAMPIONS MY FRIEEEND 🏆🐆 AND WEEEE'LL KEEP ON FIGHTING TILL THE EEEEND 🗣️📢‼️‼️‼️

I am a few hours drive from Canada, and one of my best friends online is a Canadian... Aside from his accent and stereotypical love of hockey, you would not be able to tell him apart from an American. The biggest difference I have seen is Quebec. While America does have a large Spanish speaking population, spanish is not an offical thing like french is in Quebec: For instance, you wont see stop signs in the US with "Alto" on it. Overall though, not including Quebec, then ya, most of Canadian culture is similar to American and has no bigger differences then what you would see state to state.

I understand how Simon (whom I enjoy some of his material) is how he is. He's British! Oh wait, that sounds..., racist? Tribal? Snobbish? All the above? He LOVES Canada and therefore sees a romanticized version of the truth . I'm a big Canada fan. But I further understand that he is as much of an "expert" on Canada as I am (USA laddie here). No one is truly experienced of a Country without living in said Country. Facts and figures gathered is a pale comparison to living the life after all. Yep Canada has the same problems as any Country run by white guys. Imperialistic white guys gave their best shots at controlling the world outside of the borders they were born within after all. That's us white dudes for ya! There are no near perfect Countries. An example of what I mean, which Countries are rated the "happiest"? Not the USA! The Nordic Countries, correct? And yet I would NOT wish to live in any of those Countries. What Fins, Danes and Swedes consider fun isn't the same as what I consider fun. But I would pick any of those Countries over any US state in the South. That's because I grew up in the South and can't stand the endemic racism and all around hate practiced there. Simon does put out too many videos. Momma needs some new shoes?

In primary school I remember learning that the Blue Jays were named so because they nest in high places - like how they want to hit their baseballs to high places. As opposed to a low nesting bird.

Not city icons, but it seems every town along the former Route 66 has a Route 66 sign, either on a street post or painted onto a building, and certainly available on caps, keychains, etc. They are there to remind us of a past in which we took leisurely drives through open spaces across the vast lands between Chicago and Los Angeles.

Preface with I liked this video, it pointed out aspects of this topic I hadn’t considered. I have some notes though. 8:24 I’ll just say this hasn’t been my experience. I’ve made 17 edits on wikipedia (mostly small ones but still) over the past year and they’re all still there. We’ll see if it lasts. 19:01 An interesting thing here. Cause like part of the criticism of wikipedia you levied is a) the leadership and the standards are gate kept. (Though I kinda disagree about the standards being obfuscated n such.) and b) The sources provided on wikipedia are frequently plucked through articles n such. You suggest well researched books and reputable newspapers (valid). But alas for access to a lot of newspapers and obscure or current well researched books/academic articles you either need to pay for them or have access through a university or go in person to access them. And in a way, that information is gatekept both from editors and people who want to research. Wikipedia is not just always the fastest it may frequently be the cheapest. (Note: You gave other good options of finding small passionate websites but I’ve found it hard to do that on current google tbh. That’d be a good video yo make) 20:31 I’m new to your channel so I’m curious what your background is? I’m wondering what’s informing your perspective on wikipedia as a whole other than preference and a concern about society’s overall information diet. Im a librarian with a history background from university. I’m quite aware of Wikipedias problems and in spite of that still consider it a valuable research tool. One shouldn’t rely on it, but it can still be a great jumping off point. Also side note you ask where people go when they leave wikipedia and the answer is… the page’s cited books and articles! 😂 And then to books and articles cited in those! And then you have new ideas that can’t be answered so you find more options and sources. Just because many people ‘abuse’ Wikipedia does not me everyone does. (Please know i say all this as someone who genuinely enjoyed your video! The stuff about concern over where society in general gets its info was interesting!)

Another example of Canada’s obnoxious anti-Americanism is how the Oilers were being touted as Canada’s team during this playoff run, and how so many people seemingly just cared about any Canadian team winning the cup as if it’s some sort of national pride.

We lived in extreme rural Nebraska and very few people had computers in their home if any. Definitely no internet till the early mid 00’s. My dad was the I.T. Teacher and would on occasion bring home a desktop computer to learn a new drafting program he’d be teaching. There were no games and it was pre windows so used DOS but we would play with the graphic and painting programs when dad wasnt using it.
