I love how elegant it turned out! Was searching for gearboxes using this part, as I am making a gearbox that will need to switch to 4 different outputs, wanted to find a good mechanism for holding the cam part in place. Awesome solution, and I love how you translate the movement of a lever on top into the 4 orientations of the orange cam.

One of my favourite KZfaq videos! Thank you, i hope you are well. You inspired me to create my own mechanical automatic gearbox. I used everything i learned in your theoretical series to design my own such that it would fit in a Lego race car. It's high speed, high torque and I think about as compact as it can possibly be. Hope you enjoy! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fZ-bmNCnttXLoJs.htmlsi=oPxCVlI8MQ__P6Cj

Good idea. I was thinking of making one with a barrel connector from a AC/DC wall converter- that way, it is a plug. Also, I was thinking of making another one with 3 3.7V rechargeable Lithium AA cells. But I would hate to keep taking them out to recharge. I'd have to have the charger external, which I guess is doable. Also, don't know if the motors would like the slightly higher voltage. They are 12 V motors but I think they'd last longer at 9 V.

I can't believe how much I'm struggling to find an answer to this, but how can I add a stop button that resets the slider to zero. Even when I manually slide it back to the zero position the motor keeps humming. Otherwise making the slider reset to zero when you let go would be just as good for my purpose (want to prevent a vehicle from crashing when a kid drives it). Any ideas?

Figured this out 1 minute after commenting, but going to leave my question to hopefully help anyone else using the same search terms. In the latest version of the powered up app you can go to advanced settings for the slider control (same place you can change the name) and turn on the toggles for "Return to Zero" and "Instant Reset". Problem solved. Feeling very dumb considering all the other options I tried before that :)

awesome! I can envision a smaller version that goes without the clutch and the rotary catch. All that's needed is a swing arm with a fixed cog, to block one of the paths

so in the set up at 7:25 you should switch places between the black cogs on the left and the light gray cogs on the right, making the main input of the differential the slower one, and repeat the pulling experiment

This is fantastic! I've built a couple of Spirograph designs off Rebrickable and both work well but don't reproduce the same type of patterns as the original gear version you showed. I think you've done a great job recreating the same style as the original. I would love to see a more in depth look at the mechanisms involved in your design! It looks delightfully complex. One idea I have to help with the little hiccup when the pen drops in would be to have it move vertically to engage with the paper, maybe with a linear actuator, not sure how feasible this is though. Anyway great job!

If you made your pushing vehicle rear wheel drive, or all wheel drive, it would have pushed those two other vehicles more effectively.

This is wonderful!!! I've created quite a few two speed gearboxes, but they always require a seperate motor to shift the gears!!! This is something truly unique, and innovative!!! And also it's amazing to see how powerful this gearbox is! Had a bit of difficulty trying to create a strong enough gearbox for a project (it had to handle the force of 6 Lego EV3 Large Motors!) and finnaly managed to do it, but I am totally using this instead because no shifter motor required - now I can use 7 EV3 motors! Thank you very much for pushing the boundaries of what's possible for legos, in your own way - truly appreciate it! unfortunately I just realised I can't - Sadly, this innovative design has one flaw, can't go in reverse!!!! Output is always in one direction ): But still an awesome build!
@FenixBG
@FenixBG 7 ай бұрын
You figured out the "flaw" already (it's not a bug, it's a feature!), but yes, by using the direction switch of the motor to shift gears you lose the reverse. So you need another motor going into the opposite direction to do the same in reverse (or just have one gear in reverse). So there is no free lunch, you still need two.

Could you do a version of this for aligning liftarms with each other at angles? For example the well-known 4-5 triangle that allows a 6-long liftarm to snap onto the grid at an angle. I was wondering if there was a way to figure out larger combos.
