I just finished assembling this loom the Ashford 16 shaft 32 inch. So excited gonna take a couple days off before I get the warp ready but thank you for the wonderful videos.

When starting to sew thicker fabric I put a roll of paper, cloth at the bag of the seam height to keep the presser foot level to prevent odd thread tangling at the height jump.

feet on treadles … heddles are tied to treadles notice she throws the shuttle close to the reed treadles are foot pedals that raise or lower the heddles Heddles are rectangular frames with a vertical string or metal with a hole in the middle to feed the warp thread through. Shuttle carries the weft or crosswise thread. Reed, on a floor loom the warp threads are front to back. They feed through the reed and the reed moves forward and back to pack the weft threads in place.

I just read a book set in late 1700s London about a silk weaver's family. They use a draw loom to make figured silks. I'd never even heard of a draw loom prior to reading that book, so I was so confused about why it required two people. One to work the treadles, throw the weft, and call out the draw cords needed to the assistant who would pull the cords. Watching videos like this one are helping me understand the process a bit better.

How I Sew Hems on Handwoven Towels… Yesterday I shared how I pinned hems, today is all about machine sewing them. I start about 1/2” in from the edge. My machine is a bit fancy and does a knot (not necessary). Then I reverse stitch back to the absolute beginning and give a gentle nudge to the fabric to sew over the bulk going forwards again. The main sewing part was awkward .. I was sewing while looking through the camera and straddling the tripod … how on earth do people record these things 😅 I sew right to the end, then reverse stitch about a 1/2” then complete with a fancy knot (again not necessary)… you could just reverse again a few more stitches to secure. I can’t recommend a walking foot enough when working with handwoven hems!! A walking foot has an additional set of feed dogs (from the top) that help grab and march the fabric through, working with the feed dogs below. Think alligator 🐊 having a snack 😜 🤓 For Those That Want To Know: This sewing machine is the Janome MC 6600P and it includes a built in walking foot (AcuFeed System). If you aren’t sure, bring your sewing machine into a reputable shop and they can help fit a walking foot for you. I sew hems on handwoven cloth before it’s wetfinished. I don’t measure and I don’t iron! (See yesterday’s post to see how I pin the hem) This is a hand towel woven with Brassards 2/8 cotton. Threading is straight draw on 4-shafts with a sett of 20. Treadling is horizontal herringbone. I wove them on an Oxaback, Ulla Cyrus, combination drawloom, set up for single harness … to practice before I attempted double harness 😳 #weaving #handweaver #handwoven #handweaver #handweaversofinstagram #sewinghandwovenfabric #sewing #slowcloth #kawarthaweaving #janome #janome6600 #handmade

Your work and the colors you chose for this piece are beautiful. I would love to have a loom like this but for now on my budget I stick with my lap loom and Zoom loom plus some my hubby makes. Happy weaving! 🧵🧶🕸️

I would like to see a video where you show what you do when the yarn on the heddle is empty halfways. I just started to dig into that art and it's something i wonder about. Do you knot on one side or do you leave it.. ^^

@gailwilson787810 ай бұрын
Does that loom have a race on the beaterh? How do you manage to use the shuttle, rather than a stick shuttle?
@kawarthaweaving8 ай бұрын
There is not a shuttle race. It takes some practice, but it’s doable. Consistent warp tension, properly wound bobbin and very deliberate shuttle throwing. I also use a slim shuttle.
@spiritusmentisАй бұрын
You can also make a race for it using a cross stick. Take the cross stick and tie it against the reed at the end holes (to the wingnut that's behind the reed that secures beater head). There's an article somewhere showing you how to do it, should be ready to Google.
