It's kind of weird he can't explain it. They surely must at least be familiar with the concept of being incorrect. You can't lie, but you can be wrong, surely?

This is maybe the funniest scene in the whole movie 😂 This is the potential of dubbing over something already made. Take what should look and sound like a minor pain for a character, then let it continue to *look* like a minor pain, but have it sound like the most agonizing experience of their life. 😂😂😂 I do recommend watching this one on .5x or .75x playback speed. Increases the total time he’s in pain, but it’s still equally painful. 😂

‘Your real name’ kind of implies that you could have a fake name and therefore already able to lie

No group of people would ever reach any level of civilization without lying. It would literally destroy itself in almost no time at all.

Ricky: Hey Louis I have a role for you in my movie. Louis: I can't act. Ricky: I know but you just have to be funny. Louis: OK what do I have to do. Ricky: You play a down trodden loser. Louis: Am I going to have to spend a lot of time every day in makeup? Ricky: No you will just have to mess up your hair a little and be yourself. Louis: &$*% you. How much will it pay? Ricky: It pays in publicity. Louis: I didn't know you were Jewish. Ricky: terrible high pitched laugh

If you see it our way, sure. The problem is, something like that has literally never happened before (apparently) and so he's having to convey an entirely new idea (falsehood) to people who are incapable of comprehending the idea to begin with. When he says "I'm Doug", it becomes reality. Period. I dunno, this movie was alright, I suppose, but I don't think the writers were up to this.

@@AlyssMa7rin I think, after stating something that you can visually see as false, they should surely be capable of grasping the concept...

From this scene on, these guys believe Mark is a one-armed wig-wearing Black German Eskimo pirate space explorer lion tamer who invented the bicycle and also goes by Doug. In the brain of someone who is incapable of understanding a lie, are they rewriting everything they know in their head with each lie, or do they just keep adding them up?

Philip Seymour Hoffman's little extra comment "Mark-o" was brilliant. Just under his breath like he's practicing saying his friends name again.....so minor but brilliant. I think things like that aren't in the script, the actor just throws them in and they leave it because it's perfect....my two cents.
