We moved into an older property with gorgeous apple and cherry trees. The cherries are spectacular and we haven't had to do much but ask the crows to share! But, the apples are riddled with scab. Listening to getting ahead next spring sounds like the only solution now. In the meantime, I have questions for anyone who can help: 1) I'm in the PNW, and the rain season is Oct-June, so when do I spray? Apples are still on the tree in Sept and our silver tip season occurs at the same time of our constant rain season. 2) There is a lot of lichen on our tree trunks and boughs. Should I be concerned about this? Many thanks from this newbie!

This is my first year at growing apple trees and this tutorial was very helpful. Right now all 3 of my apple trees have cedar rust, I think. I'm having a hard time identifying the type of disease they have. I just hope they make it until next spring when I have the knowledge to care for them. I appreciate your sharing of knowledge, but I did find your video a bit hard to watch. I'm 67, and still at my old slow age. I found your explaining too slow. I sped it up to 150% and then its perfect.

TWO questions: The young Cortland and Macintosh trees we planted last fall (in our Massachusetts backyard) have now lost many leaves (one worse than the other) due to what looks like Cedar Apple Rust. We have very old, very mature trees on our property as well--one apple that is losing (yellow) leaves as I write this. 1) Will our trees come back if we spray with a fungicide during the timeframe you recommend next spring (before rains--petal fall)? We are not looking for edible fruit necessarily, but are trying to replace two extremely old, rotted apple trees that were in the yard until last year. 2) Is Serenade still on the market? The chatter on line states that it is not. Thank you for all your great information!

Aphids love trees that are distressed. An arborist told me to water my mature tree more and fertilize it, and spray the tree with water to physically knock off the aphids. I did that, plus got some ladybugs that immediately flew away, and now I can’t find any aphids. The new leaves are now flat and glossy, like they should be. I didn’t think it would work, but it sure did.

Most insecticidal soaps are pretty much the same. For small scale you can use the ‘Safer’ brand, for larger scale I use ‘M pede’

Great videos! I plan to watch them all. Thanks for making them. Do you think round up persists in the soil? Could you do a video on how long chemical pesticides persist? You said that you use them sparingly. Wondering even if you use them once how long that stay in the soil? Just an idea for a video.

 @healthyhorticulture I just planted two trees with this issue, a Pink Lady & Golden Delicious. I just watered them like crazy to help them establish roots a bit, until they started to put on a couple of leaves. Then I went to town chopping off all affected leaves I could find & throwing them in the trash. I spritzed the whole tree with celestial seasoning's cinnamon apple spice tea. I plan on using the Captain copper spray in the springtime as it starts to flower. Glad I saw this though, I was planning on planting a juniper! I'm in an inner city environment, so that fungus has a lot of hurdles to jump before it gets to my apple trees to re-infect them. None of my immediate neighbors have cedars or junipers... Any further advice? Or have I done about everything I can do? Also I hear sulfur spray work well... What are your thoughts? Have you tried it before?

Really glad I found you... you know your stuff! My question: How do I get rid of Cedar Apple Rust once my tree gets it? It sounded to me like preventative spraying was recommended but it's too late for that for me as my tree already has it bad. Interestingly, my Honey Crisp got it but my Golden Delicious (10 feet away) did not. Is my apple tree going to die? How do I get rid of Cedar Apple Rust? (BTW, our yard is surrounded by junipers so, there is no getting rid of them.) Thanks!
@healthyhorticulture
@healthyhorticulture Ай бұрын
There’s nothing you can do at this point. Most of the leaves will probably fall off but your tree won’t die. Keep the trees watered during dry spells and maybe a light fertilizing just to help them through any stress, then work preventativly next spring. Hope that helps.

I have to say that this video is the best video when it comes to taking care of your fruit trees. I'm new to this and I planted 10 fruit trees on my property last year. When I was researching how to take care of them all I found was a 3 minute video that didn't explain much and didn't make a lot of sense. Until I found your video. Thank for taking the time to explain everything I need to know, what and why I need to do what I have to do to keep my trees healthy and happy to produce the most and best fruit possible. Thanks again. Jim from charlton ma.

I just purchased a beautiful apple tree 3 days ago and this evening I was getting ready to put it in the ground and now almost every leaf on the tree is badly curled and very full of aphids when you open up the leaf! With that many curled leaves I don't see how it can be saved, because if I pick off every curled leaf there won't be hardly any leaves left! Any suggestions without removing the leaves?

Thank you so much! This is exactly the info I’ve been looking for. Mostly on youtube you have people who talk talk talk talk, you waste so much time being subjected to information that’s none of your business, you fast forward and backward trying to get to the place where they finally get to the itty bitty point but it’s so vague you have to google some more. Drives me bananas! You on the other hand go straight to the point, no BS, and voila, you just outlined a clear, concise and simple spray schedule for my home orchard and pertinent information on promoting the health of my apple trees. Thank you again. Now I have but one formidable garden nemesis: ants! I’ve used food grade diatomaceous earth (the ant’s response: really, are you serious?), borax/sugar lures, no dice, commercial traps, useless, some concoction using orange oil, I felt stupid. They are everywhere in the yard, good soil, bad soil, natural stone, fake stone, you name it. And they’re mining aphids out of spite. My poor roses! I just purchased a spray called Wondercide. Let’s see how that goes. If you have ideas, please share.

Weve used primarily Neem and copper early , then Neem and Capt Jacks through the season . She has laying hens foraging so were trying to keep them safe too .Thank you again so much

Ive got aphids and ants on the undersides of the new leaves on my apple trees I've tried spraying pesticides but they come back so now I will try the soap. I'm in Bulgaria where lots of people paint the trunk of their fruit trees white . The reason is they say ants won't cross the white border because they feel exposed to prey .

1 more question. Sorry, lol. Is Mancozeb ok for Peach Trees & plum trees too? Thanks.
@healthyhorticulture
@healthyhorticulture 3 ай бұрын
I don’t think mancozeb is labeled for stone fruits (peaches, plums, nectarines, cherries). But check the label. If it’s not labeled for stone fruits look into products containing chlorothalonil. I believe they are commonly labeled for such. This would include trade names like “daconil” or “fungonil” as a replacement for mancozeb on stone fruits

So, should someone spray a fungicide like the one you have here once every 14 days for apples? I sprayed mine once at Silver Tip and another at green tip. Now they're at tight clusters. No pink seen yet. Should I spray them again? like now. should I spray up until flowers start opening. Then restart once the flower petals fall?
@healthyhorticulture
@healthyhorticulture 3 ай бұрын
Yes, tight cluster and pink are typically when they are most prone to infection. Once most of the flower petals fall off you probably want to use an insecticide as well as a fungicide. Right at petal fall is when the curculio insect starts to attack the actual fruit. m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qrSjjJthnNS2qY0.html

I have a question. If I have cardboard between the wood chips and soil, how will the wood chips deplete the nitrogen? Actually 2 questions, would it be better to use saw dust from lumber yard instead of wood chips? Seems to me like saw dust would break down faster. Plz help.
