Okay so, So since you're talking about people who are " fake goth" - would you clarify this for me? I never once called myself "Goth". But now that I'm older, I realize a lot of people classified me in that category. Why? Just because I'm obsessed over Halloween year round, I decorate everything with cute little bats and I like to wear a lot of black when I go out? That doesn't make me goth, right ? I mean it's just my normal. I don't get it.

Well to dress like a #goth, have art like a #goth but don't listen to #gothic music 😎, how does this fit together? In fact, I've heard that on youtube before.😉

"I want a goth girlfriend" = "I want a girl who occasionaly wears black, doesn't listen to all that boring post-punk/industrial stuff and also will comply to all my freaky s3xu4l desires." As a metalhead, I see why a lot of true goth girls will only date other goths.

Wearing black is the only thing goth about my appearance and I don't particularly like goth music. I was a teen in the 1980s so I know what I'm talking about. But I have a goth *soul*. I love Gothic architecture and art and the literature. I'm a night owl and a Winter person and - call me weird, it's ok - cemeteries are my favourite spots to sit and read my book in peace and quiet. "Elise" is a beautiful, classy goth name btw. Be proud of it. Loved the video and your honesty. Thanks for sharing. From Florence 🇮🇹

My favorite goth album is still Phantasmagoria by the Damned. I was just too young to see a Joy Division concert, but New Order was my first concert, even though post 1983 is not goth. I loved bauhaus, siouxsie and the banshees, liked sisters of mercy and goth adjacent punk/industrial music like Dead Kennedys, Ministry and Dead Milkmen.

I went down a bit of a rabbit hole about what it is to be “Goth”. It started with a video on TikTok from 2 Goth dudes, and went from there. I was never one but had quite a few friends who were. Anyway, yours was just one cool video that I found. I can’t believe I am 57 and only just learning what the lifestyle is all about. I started high school in 1980 so it was just coming up. Alas, I was ignorant of the whole thing. I did/do like a lot of the music. A certain segment of friends were into punk and new wave. I heard Bella Lugosi is Dead when I was a sophomore and loved it. I heard it somewhere recently and was immediately transported back to 16! Anyway, cool info, thank you!! Also, thanks for suggesting that we look into Sophie Lancaster. What a uselessly tragic story. Everyone is human just like everyone else. If someone else’s lifestyle is too far outside of your comfort zone, then just let them be in peace. ☮️ 🦇 🕷️ ❤️

I was a goth in my teens and twenties, and then I lost myself. I started trying to dress less dark and wear more of the colors from my "seasonal color pallette," summer, which are pretty, but don't feel like me. I met my husband when I wasn't wearing the black and jewel toned clothes I loved but more muted colors, and I had dyed my hair light blonde, because so many people told me I looked better that way, and I believed them. He thought he married a thin, tan, blonde woman, but he married me in disguise. I thought that was who I should be. Yet chameleon me still listened to goth music, made goth style boards on pinterest, made art with witchy and gothic vibes, even wrote my MA thesis on the Victorian gothic. All of these things I did trying to be a "normie" and fit in, but I was so unhappy, and I didn't know why. It was only this Halloween, when he and I were looking for our costumes, did I remember what I lost almost 2 decades ago. When I saw my dress, a gorgeous blue and black lace corset dress, black velvet cape, black satin gloves, and headband with black horns and dragon wings, it all came rushing back to me. I hadn't felt like myself in almost 20 years! And when I told him how I used to be and dress, he asked me why I hid myself from him for so long. I didn't know what to say, because I didn't know why. I eventually told him that I was afraid that nobody would love me if they met the real me, because in those days, I heard so many hurtful words and dealt with so much criticism that I didn't want to hear it anymore. He was pretty hurt and told me that he didn't want a goth girlfriend or wife, or a "normie" girlfriend or wife. He only wanted someone to love and love him in return. And I told him that I will always love him, no matter how I dress or what I listen to. Showing him my real self brought us closer. I told him I want to renovate my wardrobe, so he ordered several bottles of black dye and other supplies for me so I can do that and be happy in what I wear. He loves me for who I am, not what I wear or how I look, and wants to support me to be myself. That's real love, as I see it. Never settle for less than someone who loves and accepts the real you beyond your appearance. You are beautiful, amazing, and wonderful. Please don't wait 20 years to recognize that, like I did. Please recognize it now.

As an asexual goth woman: the over-sexualization of us goth women has always sucked, but the actual content of some of those memes kind of scares me. I mean, some of them literally talk about choking us without consent, and that can go real wrong real fast. And I've heard about some girls in the subculture having to avoid some crazy harassment tactics, like people putting leashes on a girl's choker rings without her consent. Geez, as if the idea of corrective rape over me being demisexual wasn't terrifying enough! Now I also get to fear harassment from men who think that my taste in music and aesthetic means consent, I suppose. From my perspective, it's just a big yikes across the board here.

As a lifelong goth who is currently 49 yrs.old I am highly amused by the whole "25 and done, now be normal" thing. I am actually stranger and way more eccentric or "goth" looking now than I was as a younger person. Why? Because I give absolutely zero f*cks what anyone thinks, I can afford all the things my teen and twenty something self wanted but couldn't afford, and I have had 30+ years of actually BEING goth to get really good at make-up/outfit planning/do it yourself alterations, etc. I am more myself now than I have ever been and honestly just plan on getting weirder thank you very much...

I love this video, it's very informative. But I have to wonder, why choose the name Goth? When Romantic literature became Gothic literature, did the writers at the time look to the barbarians of old and the architecture that followed and find a kindred spirit in them? When the music movement of the '80s took off, did they do the same? Or was it somehow completely random, possibly a coincidence? Is there even a loose thread that binds all the different gothic movements throughout history? Even if it wasn't intentional at first, I have to wonder if a desire to be different, mysterious, powerful in a sense of otherness is what it means to be goth at one's core.

As an Alternative/Metal head man. It infuriates me to hear these people make jokes likes that. For the ones who also desire that but have no background of the culture at all. I’m not saying you have to date someone in your culture. But for me I personally would as it were be easier to bond. These guys have no clue about Alt culture, it’s just the media that makes it think we’re cool.

Like - I can say I'm a goth a little bit but only because of my fashion sense. Nevertheless, I often think my outfit is still "too basic" to be considered as a goth outfit. Idk I think my personality doesn't match with this "dark vibe". I fond of listening to visual kei bands so maybe it's not only appearance:) but despite this I don't listen to alternative music at all. It's a bit hurtful to be judged only by my look and then attribute certain characteristics to me. And it's quite funny when I see a girl who has one of the most basic black outfits and she just wears a dark lipstick and then guys are like "omg goth mommy!!! 😍😍" They're so delusional.

When I say I want a goth girl, I want a goth girl. I am familiar with the scene and I know how a true goth girl will or should dress. I don't want a "barbie" who plays dress-up. My personality tends to be pretty dark and morbid at times, when I've had my fill of human socialization. I want someone who gets me without me spending hours explaining how and why I feel a certain way. Wiccan, witch, vampire.....bring her on.
