Fun Fact: There is not a single enslaved person depicted in this film. Freedom's Path is the first narrative film to be centered on free African Americans living in the south leading up to and during the Civil War. It is a story about learning to see people for the unique individuals that they are. The film has partnered with Byron Allen's HBCU GO, so every ticket purchased to the film goes toward a scholarship for specific underrepresented Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

you haven't seen any one of those movies, yet are still butthurt. Do you prefer pro-KKK movies instead?

Considering that this is a movie about different people coming together, even though it reminds us of a difficult part of American history, it appears to be a perfect film for our current time. Erasure of historically African American neighborhoods and elimination of the Black experience from public education in some places make movies like this more important than Black Panther and Madea.

Just curious...What would you prefer to see? There haven't been nearly enough movies about US Civil Rights workers and the international partnerships they were able to forge. Support from India and Japan are not widely known. Maybe you can write something about that? ALL history deserves to be told. Of course people write the things they know most about but we should all tell the stories we want to see. 😉

@@BearingMySeoul You made a great point. What is taught in American History class is very limited and so are historical films. But just like someone else said, this is a film about relationships, courage, fortitude and friendship. The time period sets the background because most people understand the situation and historical realities, therefore the setting allows the other themes which highlight our common humanity to be made more easily. To broaden people’s understanding of history, yes, there are many periods and events that have never been mentioned. But in a time when there is a concerted effort to dismiss and erase African American history by stating that it may make others feel uncomfortable, a film like this exemplifies that Americans have a common history that is complicated but within its ugliness, there are plenty of examples of beauty and courage that we need to remember also. Because we need to stop judging others by their appearance but by their actions and their character. That’s what this film is about.
