I never understood the logic of a number divided by 0 equaling null set: if I have 5 candy bars and I have zero people to share with (ie 0) how is the answer not 5? If I cannot divide I still have 5 candy bars. In addition how can I divide say five candy bars by one person? Shouldn’t that be null set?

Division is how many times a number is multiplied to be the other number. I. E. 8/2 is 4. Because 2x4 is 8. Hence 2 goes into 8 4 times. But 0 doesn’t do that. It can’t be multiplied by anything to create another digit. If you subtract a multiplied from 0 you can get a negative number. But it doesn’t work that way with division. It’s not 0. It’s just not divisible by 0. That’s like saying 0 goes into 1 1 times or 0 time. Whatever. It can’t. 0x0 is 0. 0x1 is 0. No amount of multiplying or adding 0 together will equal 1 If it was 0/1 you would get 0. But since it’s 1/0 there’s no answer. Because 1 can’t go into 0. And vice versa.

In Croatia we were always allowed to use the logarithmic tables (which usually came also with trigonometry tables along), while not being able to use calculators. Worked out pretty good.
