I bumped into this reaction video by random algorithm and I must say I truly appreciate your honest, heartfelt reaction to this film. Please, you do not need to apologise for getting emotional, on the contrary it shows you are a thinking and empathic person who can appreciate the very message the film does so well to communicate - the senseless, stupid human cost of war. Das Boot does not preach, it just tells a story of one U-boat's fateful mission and thereby shows what happens to people doing their duty and suffering the consequences. In doing that, it is a very powerful film. Especially thanks to/because of its devastating ending. Good job - don't apologise - be proud!

During filming, the actors were locked in the 1:1 submarine model for weeks and were repeatedly pushed to the limits of their performance with explosions and impacts, and they were also sleep deprived for days!

When they show the front door of the mother's house. There is a flag in the door. It shows 4 blue stars. They represent sons in the military during the war. If a son dies in battle, they mothers are awarded a gold star. Her little flag after this would have 1 blue and 3 gold stars. Many of the surviving Gold Star mothers still meet once a year.

If you are interested, there is one really good cycle about WW2 - The Unknown War (TV documentary). My heart always breaks at Part 3. The Siege of Leningrad. P.S. It is not true that Stalin didn't allow civilians evacuate from Leningrad - they tried to evacuate as much people as they could in that conditions... and even during the Siege, they tried to do it using Road of life through Ladoga (it was bombed regularly) and aviation (very small percent). With love from Russia♥

Fun fact...while they were filming this movie, another movie from America was filming too, and needed a German U-boat. The director, Steven Speilberg, asked if he could borrow the sub for a quick scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Yes, the U-boat in that movie scene is the same one here! Also, Wolfgang Petersen jokingly claims that Steven "broke" his submarine.

This boats are, i say it in german, "Diesel Elektrisch". They could operate under water but not for lang, cause of the batteries.

One of the top ten movies. I watched it 1985 the first time, when I was three years old. They run forward when emergency dive to get the boat noseheavy, to get under water faster...

8:02 These early submarines aren't like the nuclear subs today that go out to see, dive and then come back up a few months later. These submarines are more like submersibles, faster on the surface and with the ability to spend a limited time under water, a few hours at best before the oxygen runs out.

6:01 Sometimes I wonder why they bothered with subtitles at all instead of always putting "(SPEAKS IN GERMAN)" in there. He asks "Who?", that's really not that difficult especially when you have a fucking script to translate. Over all the subtitles in the movie are shitty, it's honestly best to just learn German and then watch the movie... 😂
