Always found the criticisms of Ilya’s shield odd, as he made a lantern shield. Which was spiked and had a gauntlet built into it, which were mostly used during the renaissance for duels at night or dawn. However actual lantern shields did have lanterns in them (hence the name) to temporarily blind enemies for the killing blow. So he made the more historically accurate weapon there. But then again it’s Ilya who won the sword of the year so going up against him will guarantee you second place

@danieldwyer13 сағат бұрын
I'm really confused about these 'bladesmiths'. I've only watched Forge in Fire and I'm not a bladesmith, but after watching a bunch of episodse, I know you want the blade to be a hot salmon color when you quench. The first bladesmith's blade was glowing yellow and continued to burn the oil when he pulled it out and then he wonders "Why did the blade warp?" Come on, guy! Then I watch the third guy do the same thing. Don't these smiths watch Forged in Fire? If they do, do they listen to anything you guys say? Then he quenches again, and while better, it's still too hot. Also, 5 minute epoxy dries in 5 minutes but usually takes half an hour to an hour or more to fully harden. Most 5-minute epoxies will begin to set and cure after five minutes, and will reach 75-80% of their design strength within 30 minutes, 90% in one hour, and 100% full cure in 12 hours. I'm glad that Rob redeemed himself in the final round. Very well done.

Every single time someone tries to outsmart the parameters they get busted and sent home. I don’t understand the logic of it. People really think they are going to pull something over on the judges. Really really dumb.
@pelyphin013 сағат бұрын
The guy looks like he was maybe 20? I mostly agree with you... but at that age, I would also have looked at the wording of the challenge and tried to use it - not understanding the spirit of the challenge, or realizing that the judges would basically take offense, and judge using the same kind of semantics. I actually like to see the parameters bent if possible, like he tried to bend them - but by someone with enough experience to pull it off. Most likely anyone who can do something like that is also a capable smith.

Why do all these guys wait until after the heat-treat to put handle-pin holes in the knife? It would seem to me that a lot of work can be done easier and faster before the blade is quenched to harden it.

You think by this point people would know not to make heavy blades. Even if they are not actually bad, which I don't think a heavy blade is, once I hear them talk about how heavy a blade is, it probably won't win.

If Rob had spent a little more time on the grinder, broadening the fuller and narrowing the edge, maybe he could have finally dethroned Ben. Or maybe he intentionally left his blade on the meatier side because he was worried about a more intense strength test.

I can’t believe they really expected these amateurs to beat Ben Abbott
@reliantncc186419 сағат бұрын
Rob made an excellent blade. He didn't come off like an amateur at all. That said, beating Ben is like fighting Mike Tyson in his prime. Even hardened professionals aren't going to do it.
@pelyphin013 сағат бұрын
IIRC, there was at least one comparable blade during the run of episodes. I would assume the other judges do generally recognize Ben's work when they see it, and I can't consider them totally impartial. Mostly Ben did win legitimately, to my untrained eye, and the other time(s?) it looked like two perfect weapons. It was more about giving the random Joe the experience (...while also costing him the usual prize for winning the competition, after beating his three initial competitors).
@LuisGustavoBD8 сағат бұрын
I mean, Rob had a great shot at it, all things considered. He delivered a beautiful blade that tested almost as good as Ben's. If he would have spent less time upping his layer count (say, if he stopped before that last stack at 140ish layers, which would still have produced a great ladder) and instead used the extra time further grinding that fuller to make a lighter blade and sharpening, I could see his blade going toe-to-toe with Ben's.
