Love the piano. I wanna be sitting in that living room listening & watching the piano. Rather than lying here on the beach in 'sunny Florida'. Really!!

@ 1:35 I should have loved to have had your rendition to play for my parents! Amongst their 78s they had two versions: a Rex by ‘Jay Wilbur & his Band’ with vocals by ‘Sam Browne’, and a Columbia with a vocal duet by ‘Anne Lenner & Eric Whitley’ with music by none other than ‘Carroll Gibbons & His Band’ from the Savoy! Dad was RAF and Mum was WAAF. If they managed leave at the same time, Mum made what rations they'd been able to put by into a picnic lunch, and Dad brought his HMV 102, as pianos aren’t known for portability. (One always perceives one's parents as older, but when the War started in '39, they were only late-teens). They never spoke of having ‘a song’, per se, (not one in particular), but if they had it surely would have been: ‘They Can’t Black Out The Moon’! They'd have loved this... you play it so well! Cheers!

Damn imagine how loud this roll would be on a Mason & Hamlin BB! It already is ridiculously loud on the little Knabe!
@Yalie0640521 күн бұрын
I would imagine not too much difference. This Knabe is 6ft 4in long and the RBB is 6ft 11.5in. I've played both instruments and I can testify there is not too much difference in sound or bass!
@PiotrBarcz21 күн бұрын
@@Yalie06405 Really? Huh, I thought the BB's were 7 foot, maybe the RBB is a bit longer because of player system but I don't think that's the case when it's in a drawer. Probably depends on the piano too, your Knabes have phenomenal bass tone.
@Yalie0640520 күн бұрын
@PiotrBarcz You're right. With reproducing pianos that have drawers, generally there is not adding on to the length of the piano unless it's the Duo Art system, unless you have one of those later Duo Art systems that were in the Ampico B drawers. I think what helps with Knabes is that they have such wide tails compared to most pianos which adds more soundboard volume and generally makes them sound larger than their actual size.
@PiotrBarcz20 күн бұрын
@@Yalie06405 Yeah, the boat tails are awesome for bass tone!

@Yalie0640525 күн бұрын
Why do you think it's a sloppy recut????
@PiotrBarcz25 күн бұрын
@@Yalie06405 Chords sound a bit rough. I automatically jump to think it was one of those Play-Rite cuts, I hate them with a passion. I assume by your reaction that you have an original and that's just Milne's late mastering coming through.
@Yalie0640525 күн бұрын
@PiotrBarcz OH, this one is a Klavier recut. I think some of the harshness just comes out of the original hammers. I may try to voice them down a little but inclined to just replace them.
@PiotrBarcz25 күн бұрын
@@Yalie06405 Klaviers were good cuts, so I think this is one of Milne's late hand made masters that had some sloppiness to them giving them that very loose sound. The hammers are fine actually! I like them, bright enough not to get lost in the room!

Thanks not only for the shot of the expression instructions at the beginning of the roll, but also for the shot of the controls behind the open 'rail' (for want of the correct term) in front of the keys. (Curious, was it losing air at the time you filmed this? You seem to be pumping at a dizzying rate in this video, but then in later videos at a more expected rate yet still with songs of relative tempo). Thanks again!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yes, at this point, the stack had been rebuilt, but everything below - bellows, sustain and soft pedal pneumatics, and expression pneumatics were all still original from 1914!

Hahaha? OH? But what do you mean? Does it sound similar to an Ampico roll, maybe? 😜 And I agree. There has been sole vast improvement in the microphone Samsung is using. There used to be some kind of "drop out" or "blurring" depending on how intense the volume or expression was on the piano but now seems to have a very nice balance without any compromise in quality of sound. Sometime this summer, a good friend of mine who is also a pianist and has a youtube channel, is going to bring his more high tech recording equipment and we're going to try recording some material!

I'm convinced that Samsung did a MAJOR rework of their microphones because the self noise used to be quite bad and the denoising that is built in essentially made every recording muddy. Your new phone is a great demonstration of the advance in quality, especially since the music you play requires clarity in the soft dynamic ranges to come through well! I'm actually surprised how the audio is hardly compressed, a lot of phones will just make everything loud and monotonous.
