@5:13 You state "people make innovative films, and products, and artworks all the time and they don't get a PhD for them." A colleague of mine has been in the commercial advertising business for many years and was recently awarded the Doctorate of Letters.

Thanks David, this was really useful and affirming. I spent much of my MA infused in process, feeling like I wasn’t ‘arriving’ at the artwork I was trying to create. The whole ‘journey not the destination’ comes to mind when we do a pilgrimage or a similar spiritual journey. It can feel somewhat like a spiritual journey and these days my spiritual practice is now inextricably linked with my creative practice, as it all is part of my process of being a human on this earth.

I used to look at theories and the people who made them and believed they were some sort of angel blessed upon us normal humans (Pythagoras, Bandura, even you David!). Turns out, they're all human just like the rest of us but just have different approaches to things that normal people may not think of.

With respect sir, I agree to disagree. I'm a '60's baby from the UK. I purchased my first vinyl aged 9 (Deep Purple In Rock). I'm also a long suffering fan of the Music Industry. I've endured the FADS. That extends to Music reproduction equipment. I own several CD players of various era. I own turntables from various era. And, obvious;y, speakers and Amps. When CD's started to produced in their second iteration I knew the writing was on the wall for the format. When Bluetooth landed in the Main Stream (being offered in new cars as standard equipment) I knew that CD players would go the way of the 8 track and the Compact Cassette player in cars. DODO land. However, CD's came out in 1987 so people have nearly 35 year collections of CD's and may never have owned a Turntable. Whilst those collections may have been "burned" to Hard Drives and now Solid State Drives, the only Artwork was in a CD Box's contents. So, here's my opinion. The Music Box is genius marketing. It's sit in someones collection and not look out of place - it'll fit peoples CD Racks, Shelves, and other furniture (I made several Bookshelves that accommodated CD's DVD's and Encyclopedia over the years) The release of BlueRay forced to me to make ANOTHER piece of furniture because it's form factor was smaller than DVD. Ella chose not to antagonise her fans and potential new fans with her design choices. It's environmentally friendly, it's in a form factor folk are familiar with and it's stuffed full of comparable goodies that folk who invested in the Vinyl received. The contents are equitable, the artwork is of Ella, thoughtful, thought provoking and intelligent. So, rather than take umbridge with the style,tone and delivery of your content, I'm simply going to respectfully agree to disagree.

I do see creativity as a process as well. And therefore, there are paths to develop it, tools to sharpen it and steps to guide anyone who wants to use creativity as way to make things different and somehow better.

Hey, was just reading a book of yours (Media, Gender and Identity. 2002). You should be ashamed of yourself, this is not something that should ever be put in a book people are meant to learn from; "People criticise [Anthony Giddens] for being too eclectic and for not going into things in enough depth, but those people are normally trying to turn their own narrow-minded lack of progression into a virtue, and therefore cannot be trusted." That's utter Bullshit Dave. PROVE THEM WRONG, don't just say they can't be trusted. You sound like a flat-earther!
@davidgauntlett015 жыл бұрын
Well, it was a deliberately simplistic and provocative thing to say, for sure. I’m not unhappy that it has finally provoked someone, 17 years after I wrote it! Still, I’d say it’s true that the people who didn’t like the breadth and interdisciplinarity of Giddens’s work were most often slightly bitter people with a more silo-ed view of how things should be done. Thanks for the comment.
@GhostChinners5 жыл бұрын
While I'm as big a fan of the Deleuzian approach to interdisciplinarity as the next man, I would never advocate ignorance in favour of a deep understanding of subject matter - even provocatively. Thanks for your response though, I apologise for my reactionary nature but I have strong convictions about pedagogy. I'll carry on reading, as I prefer diversification and depth, and even though I may disagree. I'll try to hold my tongue (or more accurately fingers) in future. Have a nice day.
