ok well would explain why mine goes in and out depending on temperature. and i could solder but 1 i dont have a soldering iron and i myself havent been to keen to mess with it. think i will just get an aftermarket radio with a cdplayer and bluetooth. theyre not that costly even to have best buy install them. and ive been kinda wanting a full screen touch radio anyway. but still interesting to know why pushing on it i get changes in brightness when it does display or tapping affects it.

I used to get a split-second signal loss of the cluster when hitting a bump but as soon as I grounded A8, the problem became much worst. The needle readings are completely off and when I turn everything off and remove the key from the ignition they still flicker slightly....:( should I remove the ground from the PCM and only use another one??
@jeffescortlx3 күн бұрын
Sounds like you're probably having internal cluster issues.
@MrShenron893 күн бұрын
OK so I got it working again.....I completely cut out the ground to the PCM and grounded the wire to the frame. There are two nice bolts/nuts right outside the fuse box. I simply added another 10mm nut on top of the existing one with wire running up top lol nicely hidden.
@MrShenron893 күн бұрын
@@jeffescortlx eliminated the ground to the PCM alltogether and grounded A8 to the frame. I had followed another youtuber and the comments were all positive. I am certain your fix is much better. I just found it odd that having the PCM still connected and grounding it elsewhere didn't fix my issue but only grounding it to a metal location did it.

I'd pay to have you do this, only my wife's car would be without a gauge cluster for some time. I could get one from a salvage yard through LKQ, but then there's no telling whether that one would have the same problem. And I don't want to pay GM high prices for brand new. Decisions...
@jeffescortlx6 күн бұрын
The used junkyard cluster might have the same issue, but it will also show a random odometer value.
@tedstriker7547 күн бұрын
That didn't look like a re-solder job, just a process of melting some kind of flux over the pins sticking out. What kind of flux was that? I've fixed those kinds of faults when I found corrosion on those type of pins that were shorting it to the pin next to it. Usually just cleaning that off restores function.

Hi Jeff, I just bought a 2013 malibu and I’ve the same problem. The MPH worked for one day, ride. And then next morning it the whole dashboard started to blink and shut off and come back and now. At the end of the day, on my way back home from work, it completely stopped working. I don’t see your contact information. I need your services, please
Thank you! Fix my problem and was right on task! Very professional and right to the point, even showed what it looks like when the problem happens thank you! I had a grounding problem
What equipment is used to send signals to the cluster while on the bench?

@jeffescortlx17 күн бұрын
You don't need to replace the resistors, just reflow the solder joints. For the part that you are looking for, are you asking about the diode or the trip push button?
@osvaldoNTC17 күн бұрын
@@jeffescortlx but if I want to replace them.. Yes the diode
@jeffescortlx17 күн бұрын
@@osvaldoNTCwhy would you want to replace parts, that have nothing wrong with them? The diode can come from any place that sells electronic components, Digi-key, Mouser, element 14, eBay, Amazon, AliExpress etc. But the diode itself didn't fail, just the solder joint.
@osvaldoNTC17 күн бұрын
@jeffescortlx ok so this resistors never fails? I just thought will be a good idea to replace them. You know the part # for the diode and thank you so much for your answer.
@jeffescortlx17 күн бұрын
@@osvaldoNTC I don't know the exact part number that has been selected. Again though, the diode doesn't fail under normal conditions. Just the solder joint fractured. It's very unlikely you'll need to replace it. But it's probably just a general purpose 1N4004 type diode, just make sure you order a SMD package.

Lately I have one where the VFD chip died and it keeps killing all replacements. And of course the 05 voltage regulator that does the 12v to 5v dying, if anyone knows what chip that is would really like to know. But I'll take those over previous hack jobs. Stepper motor traces are easy to fix, the worst is when your hunting missing resistors and caps by the mcu without a microscope.

@jeffescortlx19 күн бұрын
The group of resistors to the left of the speedometer stepper motor has fractured solder joints. But chances are if your cluster has not been rebuilt and has enough use to fracture those joints, you probably have other solder joints that are also ready to be reflowed, and more than likely you have bulbs at the end of the life too, and you might even have the original defective stepper motors. It's best to just plan on a full rebuild.

Now my windows, radio, and main and read dome lights dont work. Power locks work and middle row lights work. Does this sound like the battery saver relay in the cluster??

With this year range, typically the instrument cluster itself will be dead along with the radio/windows. You might have just accidentally popped a fuse.

If LEDs are requested, I've had the best luck with traditional 5 mm through hole LEDs, flat top. The manufacturer I buy them from has a large minimum order, But for somebody just doing one or low quantity repairs the US Speedo cubes are reliable, I've seen very few failures of those.
