Born and raised in Chicago, everytime I saw these, I knew I was home! Personally, I thought these were great looking lights. These were mainly used on main artery streets and looked better than the smaller variant for the side streets. I'm on the hunt for one!

Being from Chicago, I remember those fixtures quite well. The majority of conversion to HPS lighting occurred during the late '70s/early '80s.

My state used M400As exclusively on freeways and major arterial streets. Before the 90's though, they were mercury vapor. They were also the early versions that had the 2 slots at the sides of the GE monogram.

I do not own any, and at this time find no reason to spend nearly fifty dollars on an LED bulb that is not wifi controlled. Maybe if I find one used.

Studies typically suggest a proper streetlighting program reduces crime around 20%. The whole idea of these fixtures was to blast light in every possible direction. I’m planning on getting more of these but once again shipping is an absolute pain in the ass.

places with bad infrastructure tend to be poor, poorer places tend to have more crime. sounds like both have common cause rather then a brighter light banishing criminals.

Dude, these are also one of my top favorite street light models! My city used to have at least a few thousand 250 watt (or 200 watt) HPS OVMs. I vaguely remember seeing them illuminating but now my city is 98% LED. In fact, my profile picture is of a shaded OVM that I found in my city.

Can we just go back to Ceramic Metal Halide And High Pressure Sodium Streetlights...for some reason they are built to last for many years...if they are built strong enough they will last 30+ years....i mean the light bulbs also can be recycled to just look at how their made

The 100-watt A-23 mercury vapor lamp is my favorite mercury lamp type. My high school had these surface mounted Downlight fixtures mounted under a concrete canopy at about 30 feet high which were lamped with this type of bulb (I don’t know what make they were since they were so high up). The school was built in the early 1970’s, and some of these fixtures are still in use, as some fixtures were replaced with new different type of fixture. I kind of doubt any of the original fixtures still have original lamps and ballasts though. I have some of these lamps in my collection in /DX, /C and clear, although my /C and clear bulbs are GE.

This Westinghouse mercury vapor lamp is Chinese and of poor quality. Only 10,000 hour life as compared to US made lamps with 24,000+ life expectance.

I don’t think these would last 10,000 hours when the other ones say 24,000. I think it’s a typo.

Nice T17 lamps. My great grandmother still had a F90T17 fixture in the garage near the workbench last year when we were preparing the estate after Grandma passed on. The fixture hasn't worked in about 15 years, the ends were black, unsure about the ballast and starters. The fixture would have dated to around 1968, because that's when Grandpa and his brother built the garage. I'm guessing grandma wasn't willing to go out of her way to find some bulbs because even then they were hard to find and I highly doubt the fixture is still around in the garage. Anyway the garage was my favorite room at Grandmas when I was a young boy because of how bright the lights were, not to mention watching them start up. 😂

That bulb should be 3000K. I believe 3000K is the most popular lamp. Check the etch on bulb, sometimes there will be a /3K at end of lamp code.

It came also in vertical version of the 1950s General Electric Form 400, and so does 1950s Westinghouse Type OV-20 in two models, and so does the 1950s Line Materials Ovalites as used for Seattle Washington street lights, but now they replaced by LED street light throughout Seattle Washington.

There are five different bean spreads types for roadway and parking lot lighting. The most common bean spreads for roadway lighting are types II and III. I would assume they used these standards back in the 1950’s and 60’s, which is why you are getting strange light patterns. Nice fixture and history of it too!

When most light fixtures are removed and replaced with new, the old fixtures are usually disassembled and all of the components are sent off to appropriate recycler. This process is required by law in California, so maybe not in your state. If you want to get removed fixtures, you should be at the location where replacement crew is working and ask them for fixture when they are removing it. Many times they will gladly give it to you, but they cannot physically hand it to you. They will set it down on sidewalk or street for you to pick up.
