Only Rahsaan could make a recorder sound jazzy! What a wood winds monster he was. And his vocalizations were perfect..

Saw him live at the Bottom Line in NYC while he was still able to do all the horns, whistles , every weapon in his arsenal. Later, after the stroke, in Vermont Jazz Fest, Waitsfield…..he could only play one horn at a time. Better than almost anyone else. By himself, in his prime, he was a whole horn section by himself.

WOW!!!! This is WONDERFUL!!! Thanks for posting the AMAZINGLY talented Rahsaan!!! Saw him only once, at a club in Madison Wisconsin. What a FANTASTIC showman he was. Incredible and unique talent, combined with amazing skill...I still fondly recall seeing this giant in performance all these decades later. A truly memorable performer...

Anybody who thinks that snuff is out of their mind. If it was snuff it wouldn't be hilarious and these 20 year old kids in the 70s wouldn't be that interested. That's forsure some blow 😂

I got his LP "I talk with the spirits" from a student friend in 1969. A fantastic LP where he plays mostly flute. I bought a flute in 1969. I saw him live in Oslo a few years after this. I was a bit sad because he didn't play any flute, only many saxes.

HEY YOU HATERS WHO THINK THIS IS A GIMMICK - TRY THIS: Take two glasses of water and place a straw in each glass. Now try to blow bubbles evenly and consistently into both glasses with one straw in your MOUTH and one straw in your NOSE. Not so easy eh? That is the amazing technique Rahsaan Roland Kirk is actually doing here while he is artfully playing his wonderful original style of music on these woodwinds. Rahsaan Roland Kirk is a true original like no other. Here is something easier for you to try: Just try circular breathing with ONE straw into a glass of water and consistently keep the bubbles even and non-stop by storing air in your cheeks. This is (one) standard way circular breathing is taught so students can catch the basic concept of it. Rahsaan Roland Kirk, however, took this up another notch by doing circular breathing on a FLUTE (which is basically a whistle) with no back pressure at all for the mechanics of storing air in your cheeks for an indefinite duration of a note or lick. Does anyone know very many (if any) who can circular breath on a FLUTE? The physiology we see here of someone with the ability to expel air through the nose and mouth AT THE SAME TIME is baffling. None of this is a gimmick. What you see here is unique technique and pure musicianship.

RAHSAAN! The power, love and pure music flowing from this magic man captivate and take listeners on journeys that few others can muster. Never got the chance to witness his particular splendor live and did not discover him until about 15 or so years ago: THIS IS WHAT THE INTERWEBS ARE FOR ! Long live the man with the 3-sided dreams! * * * What are anyone's fave RRK albums & WHY? * * * Me? I adore the raw emotion of THE INFLATED TEAR (his masterpiece, tho, all were!) and PREPARE THYSELF TO DEAL WITH A MIRACLE ==>those spare percussive accompaniments allow Kirk's multi-horn work to shine with these simple yet profound compositions, then the CONCERTO EXPLODES: genius. SLIGHTLY LATIN is a real close 3rd place: heavens to mergatroids, but EBRAUQS kill it !

One of our great artists and an utter original. Often dismissed as a novelty act for his multi-instrumentalism, Rahsaan's death will mark its 40th anniversary this year. And he's still largely unknown. Having had the privilege of hanging with the man a few times in the early 70s, he remains a powerful presence in my life.
