I was at the 2015 NJ race. We had problems with the carb flooding on braking. I was coming into the hairpin and lost the motor. So I let out the clutch while still in 3rd, got the engine back but immediately swung sideways into the turn. I ended up t-boning a busted up beamer which I didn't feel too bad about because it didn't leave a dent on him. My 87 foxbody was a different story though. I was sooooo pissed. What surprised me the most was it was a hard hit and I didn't even feel it.

A). You soil your drivers suit. B). You shorten your race weekend in horrific fashion C). All of the time/money working on the car is flushed down the toilet D). You get a bill from the track for repairs. All things that do not outweigh the fact that you are seemingly okay. I don't care what anyone says, that is one hell of a job. I hope the other cars that you DID NOT collect are appreciative.

I say good driving and luck. He realize he lost his brakes in the braking zone intentionally swerved right into the grass to avoid the other cars, that is good reaction and his only option other than rear ending the pack. once you hit the grass there is no steering you can see him try to to give small steering input when he hits the grass but nothing so he rides it out and luckily misses the pack.
@TeamCassinRacing5 жыл бұрын
Turned the wheel anyway and pumped the brakes to try and get pressure back. Couldn't do anymore than that. Good thing the front didn't bite and turn while he was on the grass. Could have easily killed that corner worker.

Yes, lucky you did not break your wrist or arm. But glad you were fine. Was the guardrail supposed to break like that though? I am thinking no because while they need to have a lot of flexibility, they should not break either.
@SeanL846 жыл бұрын
Way too many people shooting their mouths off here... But hey it's KZfaq not a more mature platform. He had very little time in a situation that he has most likely never been in before, like most drivers, thankfully. All of 2 seconds after the first few pumps to realize he was screwed and do something. One thing that a lot of drivers are taught is both feet in and keep it straight. Engine braking in a Honda is marginal in my experience. No ebrake because stripped race car. His instinct was to either point to the longer runoff or avoid the closest car. I feel like I would have ridden it out straight ahead to avoid collecting other cars, but I don't think any of us are very well prepared for this kind of dynamic and unexpected situation to know for sure. Spinning intentionally there means you hit the grass sideways at highway speeds, assuming he was close to 90 to start since he did let off a bit. Our car is slower and hit 89 there IIRC. I would rather use the largest crumple zone available, the front. Imagine if he had hit the guard rail sideways... That rail end might have come in the window. Or you might roll. Both scary bad.

Like you say, it's not like he had a lot of time to formulate a plan.

The worst thing you can do is try to make a turn that is un-makeable. Trying to do a turn you can't make usually just gets you into a roll , or sideways into a wall, neither of which is preferable. Remember that all the crush zones are in the front of the car. It's the strongest part of the frame, use it. On every track, I know where I am going to steer to if the brakes are gone. There may be runnoffs or tires where you need but didn't expect them. Be mentally prepared. One last comment, I understand that you tried to cut the turn in order to avoid creaming somebody in the rear. And it worked out. However, had this been a left turn and you t-boned someone, you would have probably killed them. Glad it worked out.
