Thank you so much for this! I like how the problems have plenty of space below them. I think I'm going to try this for my 9th grader (with dyslexia) who needs simple, uncluttered pages.

Hello! I was just wondering if you had tried Saxon along the way. Thank you!
@homeontheplains
@homeontheplains 11 ай бұрын
We have not tried Saxon. My kids struggle with math and from everything I have heard about Saxon, I never thought it would be a good fit for them. We have tried: Math-U-See, Horizon, Beast Academy, Life of Fred, and Math Lessons for a Living Education, and I am currently trying out Learn Math Fast with my daughter. Math-U-See and Math Lessons for a Living Education are the ones we have used repeatedly and seemed to work at times, not at others. Denison has by far been the best fit, but my daughter is not yet ready for pre-algebra which is their lowest level.

We're exploring this math for my son's upcoming 10th grade year. It is encouraging that there is a focus on how the student is thinking about math...that is more than half the battle, for sure. I'm encouraged to hear your son has improved with this program. 😊

Thank you for this review. You answered my question of if the bundle comes with the correct literature books needed. Looking on the site, they showed different books in the bundle which confused me. I am wanting to teach my kids about the states this year. I want more of a faith based history. But this seems to have a little. And seems more age appropriate than some of the others that I have been considering.

Would this course be possible to complete without the online videos? Could the student or parent get the information needed from the student book?
@homeontheplains
@homeontheplains Жыл бұрын
I think it would be very difficult without the videos. The student book is not like a textbook. There is not really written instruction, the instruction comes from the videos. The example problems in the notebook are just the equations and they work through how to solve them while watching the videos. There are only some quick review pages about each chapter, but that isn't detailed instruction.

Good morning! I really enjoyed your video and transparency on your choices! We are having to shell out worldly wise as well from this school year. But we can try to complete next year as well. Also I wanted to recommend spelling city. You use it along with your curriculum. My son was hating spelling, even when I split his lost into Thirds (5 words each)! Try the free version as long as you can. He is asking me to buy the full version bc there’s more games. Plus as a mom you can track the progress and assign things to them. I’m also going to look into teaching the classics! That’s perfect for not having to buy a literature guide every time we find a book to do a study on!

Spanish is a hard one to figure out for us too for my 9th grader. We have a tight budget so live classes are out. Some affordable Spanish options I’ve discovered are Getting Started with Spanish (already pretty affordable but can be found used even cheaper; has an associated free app), Language Transfer (free; can be regular website, KZfaq playlist, or app), The Thinking Tree Learn Any Foreign Language. We are doing all three of those for 9th grade, but I’m considering Fluenz or dual enrollment for the future years. In the past (late elementary through middle), we broke Spanish 1 from Ace Paces into multiple years. All of those booklet style curriculum, like Ace Paces, Lifepac, maybe Christian Light, have Spanish that is reasonably priced.

@@de5889 Thanks for all the suggestions! I have looked at some of them, but a few I haven't heard of and will check them out! I have a minor in Spanish, but everything I know I learned from a really great Spanish 1 class in high school and all the rest of the classes (even college level!) were terrible, so I would really like to be able to do a better job with Spanish than what I had, and not something we just check off to say we did it.

Denison is a mastery curriculum although at the end of most assignments there are just a few review questions and it tells the student which lesson they are from, so they can go back and review the lesson if they need to. Here is an article from Denison explaining why he uses the mastery approach for struggling math students: www.denisonalgebra.com/blog/pickingmathcurriculum
