You can not beat any of this, tranquil & scenic, the beaches magnificent. I did the vast majority of National Service on Benbecula as Permanent staff at RAGWR (Guided Weapons Range). The Camp on Benbecula & the workshops on South Uist. Did a turn on St Kilda for a period, just pre Christmas 1961. It was more a punishment, but that's another story. During what was termed, the firing season, Kilda did the tracking of missiles, high up on what we knew as 'Decca' all the tracking equipment was there, Oscillators & the like. I served as a REME member there & there were a number of other Corps attached in servicing the general run of things. It was indeed memorable as I missed most of Spurs Cup & League double that season. Managed a couple of games when I was on leave & a couple of Reading games that was my home town club There you go, that's life. I still curse the bloody Establishment but I got some of my hard earned tax back through a free tour of some of the most stunning scenery on this earth.

Great video Dave! I climbed Suilven in 2017 with a Wilderness Scotland group tour of the northwest highlands. We canoed to get there and camped directly below Suilven while it was still smoking from a forest fire that burned over half of the whole mountain! To me Suilven is that type of mountain, a very special one that has survived many natural and sometimes manmade disasters. It even has that manmade stone fence that was constructed by some very hard work that took super human effort to build. I never have learned the real story behind that. I was in the U.S. Marines in Japan during the Viet Nam War and the Red Cross flew me home to Chicago to be by my Mom as she died from cancer at age 41. She never got to enjoy moments like I had on Suilven and I always remember her when I travel on trips like this. Suilven is special to me for another reason. It was named by Norwegians and that is my heritage so when I was there I felt like I had been there before! Thanks for a truly inspirational and thought provoking video that reminded me of what Suilven represents!

Dave, Thank you for the most beautiful and informative video. My friend and I are planning to visit Shetland and Orkney in May. What time of year was your visit? We will not have a car ( unless we rent one in Lerwick) and we will not camp. Can you suggest the best area to try to find a place to stay on Shetland as a home base? Thank you so much!!

Wow, very impressed with the quality. Congratulations on the successful proposal. They say it takes 2 years to settle properly & feel comfortable. It looks like you have that process on fast forward. All the very best for the future. Ps just maybe dont dive around Dunedin or Stewart Island- some seriously large critters who are a little more aggressive than that octopus swim down there
