Very good clips and story. Thank You for posting. I was lucky enough to be awarded my Shodan by Sensei Kase in 1998. I have thought about many of his advices ever since. (y)

Sport karate is a good compromise to become a strong fighter, preserving your self. Old school karate mean big damages and big risks.

I like the Japanese Shotokan fighter compared to any other nationalities. Japanese fights more better and they do not jump with joy if they hit a point. as if there is nothing happened. Brennan is just a good fighter but surely he will be smash by the best Japanese who will not jump with joy when they entered a hit.

These "fights" are really fake... Just marketing! The rope of the bull nose, you see the bull is a domestic one, it never reacted... Joe Blumming had a worst version of this...

Out of 20 people in a DAN exam, my wife was the only person to pass under Shirai Sensei. He awarded her her Shodan. Great memories with a great Sensei.

It’s important to remember that they were not trained for ‘sports karate’ competition, their entire training was traditional and based on the premise of that any of your techniques should be good enough to end the fight in one single strike. These guys spent years striking a makiwara and were a capable of punching through 3 inches of solid obeche wood, Their entire training was designed to strengthen their body and to be able to deliver a lethal blow. [and they are not wearing any protection or pads] so when they started to engage in illegal back alley competitions people were getting seriously hurt. This is why Nakayama started the 1st ever official all Japan Karate competition, it was done in order to for fill a need and remove the temptation for students to have unauthorised fights to prove themselves. The premise on the competition was and still is in the JKA today that … 1, in order to score a point you must hit the opponent with a recognised technique. [you can’t just wave a fist or leg out and expect to score just because it made contact, it must be a good technique] 2, the technique must hit a recognised target point [the head, or anywhere on the torso where someone would be wearing a vest.] 3, in order to score a point you must convince the judge/ref that you could have done injury with that technique. [if you make contact but you are at the limit of your range you cannot do any damage because you are out of reach so will not score a point] [if the technique was weak or poorly performed again it won’t score a point] 4, points will consist of a half point and a full point. [half point awarded if it could have done serious damage, a full point awarded if was good enough to end the fight] [hitting an undefended opponent ‘he turned his back’ or hitting with a combination of multiple techniques could score a full point if deemed it would have ended the fight] 5, all techniques must be controlled, [if you don’t hit you don’t score, if you hit too hard you be warned and the point disallowed, if you have no control you will be disqualified]

Well put. Traditional Shotokan Karate is largely underestimated in its effectiveness, but anecdotal evidence says it is very effective.
