And they will still drown cause the surface of the tube. That it is why has to be wire mesh.

The only problem you might have is the bark it's a good idea to take it off then disinfect the wood.
@txholeyrocks6 жыл бұрын
What's with the disinfect......... Don't birds in the wild disinfect it..... Stop being a PANSEY! It's just fine!
@christopherbishop50146 жыл бұрын
Zak White because birds in the wild have developed an immune system and grown up in that environment. But if you have a bird that has been bred by a breeder in captivity then that birds parent or it's offspring have no defence to bacteria , viruses in the outdoor environment. Now if your breeding Canaries or little parakeets then you have at it my friend but as my $ 2000 mcaw was hand bred by a breeder in captivity in a controlled clean area then I think I will rather be a pansey than gamble my hard earn money on vet bills or my pet being killed by not taking precautions.
@txholeyrocks6 жыл бұрын
Give it a rest Christopher! Really your overthinking the simplicity of this. It's a wood branch from an oak tree.
@christopherbishop50146 жыл бұрын
Zak White lol over thinking lol it's only a branch Yes and that branch may or may not carry a virus that will kill your birds . That's not over thinking my friend that's called being cautious . Now if you strip the bark and then use a mild soap or a bird safe disinfectant then everything is cool . I've done same thing but using a branch from an Apple tree . I think it's you that's underthinking what can happen . If your birds are avery bred that's one thing but I think you need to go check it out yourself . Good idea if you don't mind taking chances . But all you have to do is strip the bark and clean . If it's just for an out door avery then fine .

Thanks I'm going into high schoolnext year and I'm very interested in bees for a while now I have a few question Is it hard to manage bees? How much is the average pay?
@txholeyrocks7 жыл бұрын
Blue4Life - Gaming you won't get money off your bees. the expense is too great unless you sell bees or become a commercial bee keeper. becoming profitable will take about 5 yrs depending on what you do. Fat beeman on KZfaq is my recommendation.
@txholeyrocks6 жыл бұрын
You need 100 hives to probably be profitable. It takes money for equipment. Of coarse a business to sell to. Probably a few years to re-Coop your money

Zak, are you making these yourself? Are you using a router? If so, can you provide some direction (type of router and bit, etc). I've seen Joey Mullen make an overflow box but he used a table saw and it seemed very labor intensive. I am looking to make my own overflow box this summer. It needs to be 2400 GHP. Not sure how to calculate that as well.

This was Africanized bees. Key word "WAS" as now that DNA does not exist in my bee yard. I killed the hive. Attempted to requeen and it failed. Bees killed the new queen, so no need to keep a hive that inevitable die. I was a new bee keeper then, so I had to go through quite a lot. Re-queened my other 2 bee hive successfully. Mean bees suck!

It was about 10 minutes and they were all over it. I had just started bee keeping about 45 days previously and in the summer here in Texas it's pretty much dry with out much for them to forage on. We were in a drought with out significant rainfall from the end of June until November. We didn't have a fall nectar flow. I fed fed fed and was glad cause they ended up with 2 boxes of drawn comb and 1 box with 70pounds of honey. Warm winter caused them to fly a lot and be active, so in my thoughts they ate more then 70% of the stores.

I have a hive that is continually being robbed and I am having to close the hive up a bit to try to break the robbing cycle. is there a way to safely put a water source inside the hive?
@txholeyrocks8 жыл бұрын
You can use an inner cover and then put another box on top of it and a lid. Put the bowl of water on top of the frames or the inner cover. Or build a box that will be the same size as your bee hive. They make internal feeders called frame feeders too if you want to do that. They're about $7 to 9 bucks with out shipping cost.

+426 SUPER BEE Yes, I know what your saying. On this hive it was opened up way longer then I initially intended because of the frameless comb.... Ha ha. Good video and good work getting the errant comb into a frame. Brand new comb is real fragile and hard to re-frame. Wow - your "gentle" hive is a camera attacker. Its hard to deal with that much attacking. I can only imagine how tough the "bad" one is. Once I tried spraying sugar water on my mean hive. It helped only a little. Someone once mentioned putting some sort of a berry in the smoker - sumac? I'm not sure. Sumac might be poison. But some sort of berry - or seeds - in smoke is supposed to sedate the bees. I wish I could remember. I'll google for that. I went into my far west hive today wanting to do a mite count. I got everything prepared to do a powdered sugar shake. An important part of that process is to make sure the queen isn't put in the shake. I couldn't find the queen even though I looked on every frame 3 times. So I didn't shake them. What I did was to go get a sheet of foam board and put it on top of my SHB trap to catch fallen mites. I coated the board with P. Jelly before inserting it into the hive. I'll let the board sit for at least 24 hours before counting mites. I might have to wait longer because rain is forecast for tomorrow. If some of the brood you put in the NUC is real young (just changed from egg to larvae) AND if the NUC is queen less they might make a queen. If that's what you're wanting to do it'll help to make sure thay have frames with lots of pollen and honey and a bunch of nurse bees. But you already know that.
@txholeyrocks8 жыл бұрын
+southernexposure123 I did open the top and inner cover. Took a peek for three seconds. They have frames to draw comb on, so I closed it up. They did not come out. I was quicker then they were today.
@southernexposure1238 жыл бұрын
When you catch them by surprise you sometimes win. lol
@southernexposure1238 жыл бұрын
Its good they're moving a long with the comb building. That's very satisfying to see. I wonder what could prevent them sticking the top of the frame to the bottom of the inner cover. I've had that on some hives. Ooohh I watched again. They built comb where there's no frame. I made a thing with plywood that takes up some space when I'm wanting to make a 5 frame hive using an 8 frame box. It will likely prevent them doing that until you can get a few more frames to go in there. I see the ledge around your inner cover is real thin - maybe 1/8 inch. Does that work good on all your hives? I make mine about a bee space thick. Maybe I should try making them thinner?

Good job on the bee watering video. Its Saturday morning Feb 13 and I just had my first cup of French Press coffee. Its g-o-o-d - - - - - My first brew was a little weak so I'll add a few more grounds to the next pot or let it brew a little longer. Thank you so much for the thought and the nice gift. The French Press coffee maker is a beautiful piece of glassware and steel. I'll use it a lot and try different flavors and blends. My wife likes the coffee made by the French Press method, too - just the way it was made, but hers brewed a few more minutes than mine did. I guess I was a litle impatient and poured mine after 4 minutes total brew time

They deliver pretty quick sometimes. Thanks for the coffee, too. I'll look for a way to make a grinder or blender. I have a good claw hammer with a meat tenderizer head on it. lol On construction jobs I told the guys those were thumb squsher hammers. Oh I didn't find your RA anywhere on the package or contents. I'll need that for the queen when she emerges. Do you want her bred here or do you prefer a virgin if I can manage that? Oh - one more thing - I looked on your home page and didn't see a way to PM you if we need to do address swaps that way. The "about" tab is missing and I can usually send a PM using the about tab. Thanks again.
