Interesting perspectives there. How much does body type play in this? Some people are heavier built, some are relatively thin so as they progress through karate they naturally adapt. I think it was Yahara sensei said “you make karate fit you”
@karatescience
@karatescience 6 ай бұрын
Body types certainly does play a role in everything karate. Yahara is 100% correct. As you know, there are very few people who can move the way Yehara Sensei does, and forcing it beyond one's capability can lead to long term damage... because... many of us are simply not built like him. BUT we can take the principals of what he is doing, integrate it across what we know and have learned and then make it right for us. That is not to make it easy, quite he contrary, rather do what they ask, (not just mentally but physically), then interpret it through your lens (and especially for advanced practitioners, we should know what we can and can't do) and then do as we adapt. You are totally right! With this question, I am answering at a basic level the question why are different instructors teaching two different things in two ways. Part will be dogma, part will be body type, good instructors will be teaching on principle, and better instructors will teach to the person they have in front of them taking into account all of the above but overlaying taht to what the student needs and where they are at.

2:45 beginner can train this like L-shape but scientifically its a bad mistake to kick it in L-shape. You get the speed from the ground straight up, then make 90 degree turn and lose all the speed and power from the fround and need to accelerate the kick which will be very weak. This wouldnt make any sense. When you know how to do the kick and execute it it should be linear from ground to the target straight line, thats the only sensible way to do this kick. Basically this means you dont chamber you knee straight up but more like 45 degree ankle. This all is just a 1 count move, if someone wants to get the most power out from the kick. I understand that he makes it 6 count (I would teach it 4 count thou) but in real action, in a competition or a fight you better do it it linear. If someone has a different opinion Im eager to hear about it but then you have to break the law of physics I guess.
@karatescience
@karatescience Жыл бұрын
Hi there, thanks for the comment and yes you are quite right, The kick as it becomes more of a flow, is in-fact linear to the target. I had a lot of other fish to fry in this video, if you would like another one showing what I am describing below, let me know. Key thing to remember is that the “L” shape is merely a learning aid to make sure that the knee is lifted higher and tight. This is critical to prime the butt and quads for the extension of the kick. But it also actually allows the kick to be linear to the target in later variations of the kick, particularly out of front stance. I don’t talk about in this video. When you do the kick from a forward stance remember the hips have to turn almost 180 degrees and they have width. The knee of the kicking leg must come high and tight as the hips rotate and the shank pumps out in a single smooth action where both feet, the hip rotation, and the knee straightens all together at the target. Almost like the are being stretched like a rubber band. When done smoothly as a single unit of movement, because the knee is lifted highly and tight using an “L” shape that was taught as a training aid in the basic movement, the ankle, if tracked will move in a straight line from floor to target, with the width of the hips changing the “L” to a straight line. If you do not load the kick night and tight, you will actually get a “U” shape with the ankle outing as the hips come around. I suspect we are talking about the same thing, high and tight is the key. Hope this helps
@bogse
@bogse Жыл бұрын
@@karatescience I think we are talking about the same thing and I agree with all of this. Knee high (or low if one want to kick low), where ever the knee is it determines the direction/height of the kick. Thank you for your videos and sharing your knowledge, its a pleasure to watch them. Im not sure if you do Tornado kick in your karate but I sure would like to see your introduction for it if you practise that kick. There are some pretty good instruction videos already in youtube but maybe not as detailed and precise than the stuff you teach. Its basically a roundhouse (or crescent) kick with a twist. What Im interested is the difference/s how people do the loading/twisting and timing of the legs, also people use their hands to ease the twist and make it even more powerful when others may want to use hands more as a protective factor. Have a good day!

This is the hardest kick in karate. I grab my toe, raisi my hip and then try to straighten my leg and it goes in totally wrong place and hurts a lot. I guess its just stiffness but I dont know what to do to get more mobility to do this kick. I can do "harder" kicks but this is the hardest kick in karate for me.
@karatescience
@karatescience Жыл бұрын
Be careful with this one. For me, it is always paying attention to that base leg hip. Also, remember that everyone as slightly different hip angles. So maybe bending a little forward at the hip will allow you the height you want. Either way, don’t go into ballistic stretch mode and tear something. Good luck with this kick, it is indeed one for the more tricky!!
@bogse
@bogse Жыл бұрын
@@karatescience Thank you. I try to find different angles and try to get my body used to it slowly and get rid of that tightness if I have. I have done pretty much streching workout, passive static, isometric static and dynamic as a warm up. Im gonna nail this kick someday.
