Hello. I heard you talk about the food build up in the filter. I noticed that happening from it being sucked in so quickly so I put an air stone volcano underneath the intake side to deflect the current and don't have that build up as much anymore. I watch how much my fish eat and wait to feed more if they need more and I've noticed less food being wasted. This tank is great in my opinion. Love the set up and design.

Bumble bee snails and only do 10% of my coral feeding that I normally did. Significant improvement but by no means eradicated. I also built a crusher out of acrylic rod. It gets into the cracks and tight spots really well. I just give each snail a good 2 or 3 stomps.

I've heard of the bumble bee snails working have just never seen it in action. I reduced my feeding and kept the water super clean and starved them out. Bleaching in lue of hydrochloride acid works as well. I have also heard some people using lazers 5w +. I am dealing with them right now I'm going to qt my corals and nuke the tank rock sand all of it. I figure the time spent controlling them is more then the time to start fresh. I've read several on Reef to Reef who have used a high powered laser to fry them but I just don't know if I could do that. I got rid of mine through manual removal and about a months worth of light feeding and water changes. I kept the water to clean for them. And true I don't ever wish this upon any hobbyist ever because it's nightmare once it starts.

I'm currently dealing with a infestation of a 90g tank. I'm moving all critters and corals to a 75gallon all rock is being bleached then rinsed and left out side to dry for 30days or so. My small rocks were all scraped then soaked in chlorinated tap water for a couple hours then outside. Read these things can live 24hrs or more in their shell cause they will seal themselves in let's see how well they do after a bleach bath and freezing Temps for 30 days or so.

@@leepearson4400 so when you have areas inside a tank with no or very low flow it allows for detritus and algae to build in those areas, I actually installed a Hydor 240gph powerhead in my Flex 15 to combat this. Also bettas do enjoy clean oxygenated water, they just don't like excessive flow its possible to set up a return nozzle and powerhead that allow for good tank flow to keep it clean and turning the surface over for good oxygen but still buffer the flow enough to where a betta isn't getting beat up all day.

Hey man, I just started my first reef tank. I have a 20 gallon long tank. When I started I used live sand and live rock. I did my cycle which took me about 3 to 4 weeks to get correct. I added inverts a week ago. Today I added my first fish and a couple frags of zoas and GSP. I bought a basic osc. clownfish. I went to feed it with some frozen cube food and I got these spider silk lines coming up out of my rocks. I obviously have these snails in my tank. Since my tank is so new and I only have a couple frags of coral I’m almost wondering if I should just pull the infected rock and boil them? No rock I have is larger than a softball. It wouldn’t be that difficult to do. I am just worried about killing beneficial bacteria. I can’t even see the snails to pop them with tweezers. All I see is their slime line. I guess this is my first pest in the hobby.... so should I pull and boil or just hold off and pop them when I see them? When ever they get big enough to see....
@reefbasics414
@reefbasics414 4 жыл бұрын
the only problem is your rock and sand make up a large portion of your bio filtration so pulling it without backup may swing your parameters high. i would feed lightly and break them off as they grow unless you can find or make sterlie live rock.

Thanks for the info. I'm new to the hobby and have been trying to figure out why some of my corals looked sad and then I saw the vermetid snails. Pretty sure they came in on some coral frags. Will dipping kill them?
@reefbasics414
@reefbasics414 4 жыл бұрын
most times after the coral has been in the tank no, a dip for a new piece never hurts but vermintids are tough and usually can survive being out of the water which in turn will hurt the coral, if its live rock just throw it in a 5 gallon for a few weeks scrub and boil and no problem. Unfortunately once they get a foothold its manual removal and reducing tank feedings/nutrients in the tank to slowly kill them off. i have been told bumble snails will kill them but have not tried yet myself.

@reefbasics414
@reefbasics414 5 жыл бұрын
i used established tank water but did keep an eye on levels, depending on how much you feed or how many/size of fish the water can get dirty quick you will have to do water changes, but you will also have to monitor your copper levels. the problems with dosing medicines in quarentine tanks is that the medicine will absorb into the sand,rocks and media so if you ever reuse that in a system with certain fishes, almost all inverts and alot of coral species can not tolerate any copper. so if you reuse it will leech back into the system possibly causing problems.
