Strange, the RAC says it's the only circular motorway, I wonder what makes it different to the M25? Keep Smiling camped on his ride around the M25, not sure if he got any sleep with the traffic noise! I agree about finding roads you don't know but are quite local. I use CycleTravel to plan rides. If I can't think of a destination I use the 'suggest a ride' feature in the app. This has taken me down lanes and tracks I didn't know about, some less than a mile from home. It is always a surprise to me just how much green space there is around UK cities if you travel by bike. Thanks again for the video.

Thanks, Colin. Agree, there's often more green spaces in and around cities than you would guess, albeit some can be in a bit of a sorry state and/or feel a bit unsafe. Not heard of Cycle Travel before so will have to check it out. Komoot has a 'discover' feature but I've always found it a bit naff and not the kind of UX I'm looking for. Happy cycling!

Hi Neil. With a load more planning than I did I think you could make a very rider-friendly 'tour of Manchester' out of the route, with detours to places of interest, great cafe stops etc. My Strava hiccupped a bit at the start but the 'motorway loop' I took is in tact I think (link in my profile here on YT). It's a bit of a left-field ride and hand on heart there's better/more scenic cycling in the area but if you ever try it let me know how you got on - even if to say 'god, that was awful!' 😉

You mentioned using or losing your local bike shop which is spot on but when the local bike shop becomes a bike boutique as my one did you end up doing everything yourself. I ride an old, but expensive in the day, bike and they just stopped being interested in fixing basic things like brakes and shifting problems. I'm lucky as I worked as a mechanical engineer so bikes are (were) simple machines and it's basic stuff. Having said this it did mean quite an expense buying special tools. With electronic shifting becoming more affordable I'm out of my depth. it seems you need a laptop rather than a spanner to adjust them so I'll stick with cables. Did you find out if the cyclist recovered OK? Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
@onemorecyclist
@onemorecyclist Күн бұрын
Completely agree, Colin re the expense of buying tools; not to be underestimated and you're running a false economy for a while I think when you start doing your own maintenance. Cheaper in the long run of course. Shame about your LBS but it's the general direction of travel, isn't it? I was just in south Manchester yesterday and cycled past what was my LBS for years - gone now and such a shame as they were the kind of shop you could just roll up to in an emergency (no matter how low-budget a bike you were riding), made you a brew while they got you back on the road etc. I kept an eye out for news of that cyclist on local/emergency services media and never saw anything, so I'm really hoping no news was good news. Thanks for the comment. 🙂

That sounds like a fair assessment, all the more because you've stumped up your own cash to buy it. I rode a folder years ago and found the narrowness of the handlebars made it feel very twitchy. I think they have a place for mixing public transport with a bike use and for those unlucky to have nowhere to store a bike. The Brompton has a huge following and I watch a couple of You tubers who camp and tour for long distances so as people say 'you can tour on any type of bike'. Thanks, Colin. That twitchy handling is the main thing to get used to and it definitely takes a minute when you jump from a 'regular bike'. I can't recall ever struggling to see the display, Jay, so I'd say it copes well with the brightest days the UK has to offer. I will sometimes remove my (cheap, dark) sunglasses to check the map turnings now I think about it. Thailand sun is probably on another level though - non-scientific but you know what I mean :) It definitely doesn't have the reflective glare my phone has on sunny days, which usually has me dialling up the screen brightness to max just to be able to see anything. What do you use at the moment, phone?

The problem I have with both Garmin and Wahoo is that the screens are tiny and I'm 48 years old with typical long-sightedness for my age. Got a bolt v2 recently having used a phone and back up battery for 18 months. Out of the box I was a little concerned it seemed tiny in comparison to the phone, but in use the information is easily read and flicked between, I particularly like the climb mode that pops up, also when the heart rate starts going up it changes colour so you can call A&E quickly 😊. A noticeable difference is that sun glare isn’t an issue and it’s easier to flick between tunes if you listen to music. Overall It’s intuitive to use so doesn’t need a lot of instruction reading and I am pleased with my purchase. Trying to think of a negative, but the more I use it the less negatives I find. Already Looking to get a radar to link as I am sick of looking behind myself constantly.

Thanks for the comment, Andrew. My eyesight isn't great these days (very comical watching me try and read ingredients labels on stuff!) but like you I find the V2 screen pretty comfortable to read, even though it's small. I’m currently in a heated ‘discussion’ with Matt Page on his KZfaq channel regarding this route. He’s absolutely adamant that the TCW is not a technical bike route, nor is it something that can’t be completed by anyone with average fitness levels. I beg to differ. It’s hard, gruelling, and relentless for 90% of the time. I honestly struggle to think of sections I actually enjoyed, it’s that bad. Don’t believe any of these guides that show happy, smiley, untouched by mud or sheep shit individuals. It’s the stuff of nightmares if you time it wrong or get bad weather. The best thing to do and also what we did is to have backup routes planned to get to the same destination. Routes that follow nice quiet back roads instead of through muddy fields or gorse bushes etc.
@onemorecyclist
@onemorecyclist 4 күн бұрын
Appreciate the comment GK and whilst my younger self might have tut-tutted a little at bailing, it was the right choice for me on that ride (I still think). I completely agree with your note to have back up route ideas if you're determined to get to a destination but the going seems unreasonably tough or severely lacking in enjoyment (or just has too much sheep shit for one person to cope with, I seem to remember :))! I've done a few rides over the years of routes I watched on KZfaq beforehand and they never quite show the reality of what you'll experience - some are reasonably close, some are way off! Happy cycling!🙂

What Boardman are you riding? Not sure about going full road or the Boardman ADV because of road conditions and also ability to gravel. thank you and keep the content coming, fantastic stuff.

Cheers, Mark. Ian was on a Dawes touring bike and I'm on the Boardman SLR 8.9 here, which I've reviewed on the channel (a while back). The road bike is great but as your comment alluded to you get a fairly one dimensional 'tool' with road bikes. A gravel type bike, hybrid (or whatever the cool term is these days etc.) definitely gives you a bit more flexibility in terms of terrain and opening up those 'bike touring' route options that may include a bit of towpath or bridleway riding. I've heard really good things about the Boardman ADV ... the Triban gravel bikes might be worth a look too? Happy cycling!

@onemorecyclist, thank you for the feedback. I was considering the triban 520rc with shimano 105 as you can gravel it up tyre wise. But they seem to have dropped 105 for Microsoft.

There was.no ranting. With the low life's wanting to angle grind locks off in broad daylight then safe locations help the cycling community and people who want to use cycling more in their daily lives.
