Great stuff - thank you. Now controlling my turntable from the iPhone - brilliant! One question - it does seem a little fast compared to a prototype (maybe I'm wrong?) - is the speed adjustable?

From memory I believe it is but best to consult the Heljan user manual first.

Thanks - I can't see anything in the manual. However, I did some googling and if I look on pictures of the 89111 control box, the two buttons on the top right of the control box are labelled "Bridge speed +" and "Bridge speed -". I then read forums that say that Heljan have advised that these don't work on the current model. (Consistent - not labelled and not referred to in the manual.) Other advice on railway forums is to reduce input voltage using diodes back-to-back in parallel - not sure about using that to reduce speed - hmm. Maybe later. Anyway, thanks again.

After viewing a few reviews it has been mentioned that the wipers are in a position that can’t be readily viewed, I guess Bachmann took advantage of the fact but could have shown them anyway in my opinion, if I buy one of these models I will fit a set for good measure.

Thanks for the video. I've just upgraded a Hornby A4 and a Golden Age Models A4 to Locoman ESU decoder. Much better than the SWD, which was OK in it's day. I've put large Rail Exclusive speakers in the tenders. great sound. The serial number is also shown in the bottom left and corner of the LoPro screen.

There are many situations not dictating to use a reverse loop module (RLM). E.g. the layout in your sketch at 3:02 just needs a relay depending on the turnout. The considerations are similar to those when powering a frog, and some switching motors already come with contacts intended to this purpose which could power as well the reverse loop. If standard double solenoid motors are used a relay with two solenoids can be used in parallel. But you have to make shure that the turnout points always in the right direction which can be done by contacts applied to the rails in the loop.
@theengineshed359
@theengineshed359 9 ай бұрын
Perhaps that solution would be fine for some. But what you describe introduces greater dependance on mechanical switching and therefore greater probability of potential failure. Considering the product is a solid state solution it provides more reliable operation and integration to an existing DCC layout. The video after all is a product review, not an exploration into electrical engineering.
@LarsPW
@LarsPW 9 ай бұрын
@@theengineshed359 I have got a LK200 for myself and it works fine. But there are situations it will not help at all. I missed a mention of a very important limitation valid for each reverse loop module: A train must not be longer than the track between the two electrical separation points. And if the reverse loop has got turnouts in between a RLM will not help at all. RLMs switch allways under load, that is why the relais in the Hornby solution fail after a while. Solutions controlled by the turnout position(s) switch without load before the train reaches and we have no significant wear on the employed contacts. Depending on the type of switching motors it saves money, not so unimportant in these days, I think. "[...], not an exploration into electrical engineering." - <sigh> is a bit narrow in thinking. I think model railroading sometimes contains a bit electrical engineering.
@theengineshed359
@theengineshed359 9 ай бұрын
@@LarsPW it is far from narrow thinking. It is an honest statement, this video was made about the LK200. Its has served its purpose, in proving insight into a product that at the time had limited exposure in the English speaking markets. While I absolutely appreciate your insight on an alternative solution. I have to consider the simple fact that these videos need to be as simple and clear and concise as possible. Majority of the audience only want know if the product will work for them. But by all means as you clearly are passionate on the subject matter, I would encourage you to produce a video explaining your concepts. We are all hear to learn from each other after all. I have the same Hornby Pullman coaches but when being pulled along by the loco the lamp lights flicker but when the coaches are stationary they stay on constantly. Why is this?
@theengineshed359
@theengineshed359 Жыл бұрын
This is a common occurance for the hornby pullmans. Simple answer is your coach wheel are dirty or the pickups are dirty and not making contact with the back of the wheels. A q tip and some isopropyl alcohol will sort that out. additionally a capacitor on the lighting circuit will stop the flicker. DCC concepts offer flicker free units.

@@mattseymour8637, My experience with using them could have been better. I found that they did not clean as effectively as isopropyl, and would tarnish the rail head in my humid sub-tropical hometown. The advantage of alcohol is it evaporates relatively quickly but does a great job of breaking down dirt and grime. If you have a CMX clean machine, it's even better.

Love the review, however can you tell me that the 5 cars can run in either direction, considering there is one driving car and while it can lead what about reversing, is it just as comfortable as going "backwards". And un hooking. Now I have the Hornby Class 370 and it is amazing, as the driving car is in the middle of 5 cars it is very comfortable going in either direction, oh and it tilts into the turns, pretty cool. The middle drive car has a inter locking type of connection to each car while the other cars are just a drop on type, but very fiddly and patience required, hence my question about the coupling.
@theengineshed359

No issues when running in either direction. The power car has sufficient weight and traction to push the unit along at a good speed along most track geometry.

I have just purchased these point motors for my Restoration project in conjunction with the Cobalt Alpha switch setup. I have not yet begun the installations however I intend to have the points on their own accessories bus for the DCC and the control system which is NCE Powercab will br separated which will simplify any possible fault finding issues which may occur. The restoration project was originally a DC layout however that was in 1973 and DCC offers a lot more advantages than the older technology which was available at the time. The Cobalt motors also have the advantage of being able to control signals from the outputs on the connector using terminals 4,5&6 which is a plus when using these as a replacement for solenoid motors.😄

Nice video pet :-) you could probably do with some "knitting" on your layout .. as for the 90, 91 and 92 compared, the 91 is pretty much only ECML passenger express functionality only, the 90s are a mixed traffic loco predominantly WCML but seen for a good period on the GEML and sporadic ECML use, then, there's the 92s mostly Freight use made for channel tunnel operations initially, more recently found work on the Caledonian sleeper, basically they're all a little different 😉

What did you do with the AD-FX BEFORE you created the accessory in ECoS? Is there a programming step missing in your video? For example, both the Digitrax DS64 and/or NCE Switch-Kats must be programmed with jumpers or switches at the board itself. I fear your video is missing that step.
@theengineshed359
@theengineshed359 2 жыл бұрын
Well, the first thing to note is that these units are now obsolete and are not comparable to either of the alternatives you have mentioned. One of the features in the AD-FX units when I was using them back then, was the learning switch. So regardless of the accessory, I created in the ECOS, the run-set switch on the AD-FX unit meant that I could change this on the fly while installed under the baseboard no jumpers are required for these. Which makes the organization much easier when physically wiring these units up to the solenoid point motors. These days I'd recommend using the Cobalt IP digital or the Smail point motors instead, much less wiring and much easier to install and Program.

The word "Cobalt" concerns me. The reason being that Cobalt can be radioactive (Co 60). And it's known that some 12v DC motors produced in the US contain radioactive cobalt magnets. US Radioactive restrictions are not as stringent as they are in the UK. Where such motors are supposedly banned. But that hasn't stopped ignorant citizens from importing such items from the US in the past....... !!!!

No real point sending it back to Hornby from the USA with the shipping costs, at least they will send me parts :) I don't think Hornby are doing the extra coaches for Azuma 800. They appear to be doing them for the Azuma 801/2, so R40350 goes with R3965 (unreleased Azuma 801/2). If you don't care the running numbers don't match, it'll work. Its such a nice model though.
