So…. 11 regal 2.0 turbo. Kids car. Not the best in maintenance. Has had a check engine light on forever. Kid is an adult-ish. His mom pushes us to help. Codes set for po246. Wastegate solenoid circuit high. ONLY hard code. Oh…. And there’s a noise…. Pin out the solenoid per the chard(after checking the basics…. ) and confirm voltage coming from the ECM. Ugh. Order an ecm…. While I have the car i’ll fix a few leaks and fix a noise…. Pull valve cover and find sludge and some fun gold flecks….. the chain had almost cut THROUGH the upper guide. Picked up tensioner, upper guide enough oil to flush three times and 4 filters…. Cleaned, vacuumed everything I could see, replaced upper guide(across cam phasers) rolled exhaust cam rearward to put all slack in the tensioner portion…. replaced tensioner… (that was a sob to start for some reason) it pushes way in and the chain guide moves a lot with resistance so i’m 90 percent certain it’s deployed… and i still have WAY too much slack in this chain. I keep looking and where the revised bolt you explain in your front timing chain guide should be…. There is only the original cover bolt…. Looking down i see no guide….. no guide bolt…. And some healthy grooves where the chain slack has been dragging the cylinder head case and upperblock/timing chain passages. Where the F is the missing bolt and guide pieces….. not how i wanted to spend my friday night….. but tomorrow i’ll pick up Everything you did in the video….. 150000 mile regal for sale in STL. Lol. Thanks for the great video.

You made this a doable job, and yes it takes patience and many short & long 10, 12 & 14 sockets, swivels can be helpful and a air rachet. I could not get the engine to jack up I even loosened the mount between the engine and transmission. I think there might be a rear engine trany mount also. So, I had trouble getting the pulley back on but with persuasion, got it on. I think if you put it on the pump as you install it may be a better idea. Thanks again, great video!

Is that the new design of the backing plate? One video said that if you don't update the backing plate it will do the same thing again?
@SeanBaker
@SeanBaker 7 күн бұрын
I completed this exact job yesterday. It was a heck of a job due to the tight space. You're lucky that your car only threw a code. My car completely shut off while I was driving 40 miles an hour down the street. Even after my car is set for a few hours, and I got it restarted, the code never appeared. I'm sure you know this by now, but it is a MUCH easier job if you just take off the front left headlight. I thought taking off the headlight was a hard job, but based on the video I watched it's extremely easy. It would have saved so much time and hand injuries. 😂 Just the same as you, I did not use the new bracket, because that would have involved more work.

@feathermerchant 7 күн бұрын
@@automotiveinsight Thanks for the response. If there is no mechanical or safety reason to orient something, I'll put it back in such a fashion to make it easier for me or the next mechanic. That bolt was most likely placed the way it was for production efficiency with no consideration for ease of servicing.

Can my auxiliary battery drain a new main battery I replaced my main battery a few days ago but not the auxiliary they both were the original ones when I got the car it’s a 2020 and I got it about 2 years ago I did once have to take it to the dealership for them to recharge it. When I replaced the main battery it started and everything came back on I didn’t drive one day and when I went out yesterday after it hadn’t been driven it was dead all the lights and nothing would come on I’m hoping I just have to change that battery and it’s nothing worse

How do you ensure that the belt tension is correct when installing the new alternator?
@automotiveinsight
@automotiveinsight 20 күн бұрын
Technically there is a tension gauge. But I just feel the belt.
@haila9354
@haila9354 10 күн бұрын
For mine, grabbing the belt at middle point between alternator and water pump (I think) and twisting it 90 degrees. There should be a "strong" resistant/tension beyond 90.

I was driving in the Palm Desert in California yesterday (115°F) and my car threw this code. I’m going to attempt this repair myself soon. My question is, will running the car after connecting the tubes naturally clear air out of the system? Is there anything special needed to clear the system of air after installing the new pump?
@automotiveinsight
@automotiveinsight 20 күн бұрын
Keep the reservoir cap off and the reservoir full while running. After about 5 minutes, all the air will be out and out the cap back on.

On 2:08 there's a black gasket that is not included on any aftermarket starters. Of course an after market is what I have, and I misplaced old gasket (long story). I went on and special ordered a new gasket from the dealer. My question is will it hurt if i put starter back on for a few days before getting gasket (I mean even the dealer found this gasket to be odd, but I'm sure it serves some purpose). Putting starter on and taking it off again is definitely more time efficient than shuttling my wife around for a few days 🤷🏾‍♂️

Man I wish I would’ve seen this before I did my pump a few months ago. That bracket is a bit of extra work to take off, that bolt that goes to the body is in a tight spot. Not a huge deal but would’ve saved me time to just take off the pump and put new pump on the old bracket.
