This should be a great watch. I like how the second hand hits the markers. Most quartz second hands flop around all over the place like a wet fish. However, if we are talking about ultra high precision why not make a sweeping second hand? Time does not stop and start like a quartz second hand. It is continuous. They should have made the secondhand sweep so you could visualise every precise increment of each second. The biggest killer to me it looks. It’s so boring. As uninspiring as VHP is, so is the looks. It isn’t special enough. Maybe fluted bezel, or a ceramic insert. Introduce some VHP chronographs, or an alarm. Dress it up a bit and have a show stopper.

I've long gone back and forth on this, but am firmly back on the Submariner side. I love all the different options available with the SMP300, but the Submariner wins on so many levels it's hard argue otherwise. The Omega has the price advantage, and the accessibility advantage. But if you can get the Sub, it is better sized, much thinner, better movement, better bezel, far better bracelet and clasp. Looks are also subjective, but the Sub is also a design icon that the SMP300 is (loosely) based on. And it doesn't have the awful helium escape value and obnoxious marketing. Overall, it is a matter of preference and price of course, but the Sub wins it for me.

I find amazing how they can make a solar cell work with those dials.

Dial has as much texture as that 1980’s Razzle you lent me and the readers wife’s page was like a sheet of 10mm marine ply. Oh and was that your Aunt Sandra on page 43?

They make those clasps over 40 years! I have Citizen eco-drive with the same clasp 30years old still working! Why change? If it is not broken, why fix. And you can't find integrated titanium sport watch for this price! And why 400gbp? I saw this one in Budapest for 280....

I had a Komodo when they first came out, it's a heavy and thick watch I wouldn't usually like at all, but I freaking loved it. It's the only watch I have owned I regret selling and I have been through more than I would like to admit. This is very tempting!

More French goodness coming from Baltic. But calling a 4 Hz movement high-beat is a tad optimistic. Apart from Omega coaxial escapement, the ever popular Swatch Group Powermatic 80 and cheap Chinese pieces, every brand now has had 4 Hz movements for ages. 5 Hz is high beat.

Brands these days seem to try to outdone themselves in stupid names: "Belhamel", "Ocean To Orbit", "Second Hour" etc. - and I didn't even look at the Chinese brands… This has only one way to go - the Christopher Ward way of reducing the branding to just the acronym, which is what most of the western sounding names have to do, otherwise it looks like a shopping mall branding.

Vostok and Ivincta are worse, at the fashion brands don't pretend to be anything more than they are.

Good review. I have GMT Master 2 and also this model. Accuracey wise the San Martin is running at -1 sec a day out of the box the rolex is -5. Not what I was expecting. The feel and quality of the rolex is there but guess whats on my wrist 99.9% of the time, the San martin Its a good looking watch, clear, accurate, the bracelelet being fully brushed takes a beating and still looks new. The rolex bracelet scratches as you put it on. Pees me off, forever polishing those centre links. If you want accuracy and quality at a good price go and buy a casio MTG from japan +- 0 secs a year and the build quality is class. Had mine 5 years and no scratches, DLC coating.
