Be fair football was shit then. Didnt come alive until the mid fifties that Everton side wouldnt have lived with the 70 or 84 sides. Now they were hard tough classy players.

Tommy Lawton in his biography said dean could jump from standing with both feet together on to a snooker table and land on the centre. From the side to the blue spot. I believe that.

60 goals in a single season......that’s mental. As a Liverpool supporter I take my hat off to Dixie and feel proud that he was a Scouser. He was probably the greatest striker this country has ever seen. Just imagine, if they were both born in the same era - Dixie and Jimmy Greaves in the same team! Unplayable!

William Ralph Dean is the best Centre-Forward ever bar none. Apart from what Lawrenson said, Dean also had to put up with the offside rule even more than today’s players as it was much harder then to stay onside. At least two players apart from the goalkeeper had to be between you and the goal to stay onside whereas today you can stay onside with only one player between you and the goal barring the keeper.

@bobbymoore8864 I'm an Evertonian and regard Everton's Dixie Dean as the all-time best centre-forward in English football history. His record of 60 league goals in English league football's top-tier in one season, 1927-28, is phenomenal, and very likely will never be beaten. Last season Haaland at first looked to threaten it, but in the end was far behind. Still must say that the offside law was changed in the summer of 1925 to the form it's still today. Before that date it required three opposition players, and one of them could be the goalkeeper, to be in front of the scorer if he received the ball via a pass. After the modification it needed only two opponents, and one of them could be the keeper. That's why the goal tallies, individually and for teams as a whole, increased very much in the season 1925-26 and onwards. But it's nothing to take away from Dixie's magnificent records, as his total tally for Everton is 349 league goals in 399 league matches (and of those 310 league goals in 362 league games were in the top tier, that's the First Division).

Football attendences were at an all time high in this era the standard of football must have been pretty good too...so he was definitely no flash in he pan and I believe would have been top scorer if he was playing in today's premier League

Dixie Deans record of 60 goals in a season may never be broken, but if it is to be, it'll be if or when Lionel Messi decides to play in the premier league. I could see it being challenged then. Couldn't rule out two goals a game for Messi.If Messi doesn't play in premier league - then it'll be another 100 years before a good enough player comes along to challenge again

Archie Stark scored 70 goals in 47 games in a single season (1924-25). (Archie scored 67 goals in 44 games and Dixie Dean scored 67 goals in 46 games). Still Dixie is one of the greatest goalscorers of english football, the other one being Jimmy Greaves. I couldn't tell which one was better though.
@WWERATEDY2J778 жыл бұрын
+BurnRoddy Yes but Archie Stark played in the virtually unknown American league in the 20's. Dixie Dean played in the First Division in England... massive difference.
@BurnRoddy8 жыл бұрын
Bren sYd I'd say big difference but not massive difference. The American league was particularly good back in the 1910's and 1920's they it used to be mostly English, Scottish and Irish players. Mostly unknown yes, bad not at all, probably better than the Irish league. But still, my point was precisely because Archie didn't play in the Premier League it's hard to Stark him up to Dean IMHO.
@WWERATEDY2J778 жыл бұрын

Losing a testicle in a game, having to have his leg amputated and dieing at Goodison while watching his beloved Everton lose to his nearest and dearest rivals shortly after Bill Shankly gave his famous speech about Dean. This story along with the story of Jack Johnson are two of the greatest stories never told and almost forgotten which is a great shame.

There are a lot of Movies made and books written based of fiction which are far less interesting inspiring and motivational. The story of Dixie Dean is fact and truly incredible. From his near death in a motor bike accident and potentially never playing again to completing his remarkable feat of 60 league goals is truly incredible.

Though there have been many footballing legends,Dixie Dean is the 1st origional Footballing Legend and for that the greatest of them all. From Tommy Lawton to Messi they are standing on the shoulders of a true giant of the game.

English league, Peter Reid was destroyed by Maradona in world cup 86. Dalglish replace one of Liverpool other greats Keegan who played against Bobby Moore, Keegan admits to Bobby Moore having him in his back pocket. Moore played aginst Best and Pele etc etc they can all be compared right back to the begining but non of them could do what Dean did from this day to that.

history, Owen played in the same team as Shearer for England the highest goal scorer in PL history. Owen also played in the same team as Fowler who Liverpool call "God" because of his goal scoring abilities. Fowler played in the same team as Rush who was one of the greatest goal scorers in Europe. Rush played in the same team as Dalglish Liverpools greatest ever player according to most LFC fans Dalglish played against Peter reid of Everton in the mid 80s who was voted the best player in the E

nippy players and quick skillfull players. Dixies achievements should not be belittled because of the changes in the game just as Messis achievmnts should not be downplayed in 80 years time. In their own era they managed to do things that no other in there generation could come close to. But like i say they can all be compared. Wayne rooney the best english player of his generation according to Alex Ferguson played in the same team as Miceal Owen the highest competitive goal scorer in England h
@bieituns11 жыл бұрын
All the players and generations can be compared. The rules have changed from time to time which have some times made it easir or harder for strikers to score or for defenders to defend. Within the rules of the time Dean was the greatest, it is being made easir once again to score goals in the modern game with game fast becoming a non contact sport. It started with banning the tackle from bhind and both feet off the floor now most defenders are scared to slide tackle making it easir for small nip

Football is all about opinions. Today there are poeple who say Ronaldo is better some say Messi is better. Back in the 30's people wouldnt have had television to see these player. Dixie was coming to the end of his career when Lawton was on the up. Of course Lawton was better near the end of Deans career but if you compare them both in their prime or their best season Dean scored more. Fair enough Lawton lost his best years because of the war but Lawton was standing on the shoulders of a giant.
