This is so spooky and SO depressing that I don't know why I've watched it several times, other than I was a USAF brat whose dad was a SAC officer and B-52G senior nav. I distinctly remember the cuban missile crisis when I was a young tyke riding my little bicycle around the neighborhood just a mile from one of the largest USAF bases on the planet, where my dad was on alert, waiting to see the mushroom clouds. Ironically, dad probably would have survived the nuke bombing after flying to safety in his BUFF but my mom and I and all the rest of us stranded on the ground would have been killed.

I recently read a book on the B52 and they pointed out that, during much of the cold war, the US had a number of nuclear armed aircraft in flight at all times within a few moments striking distance of Soviet targets. I suspect a similar operational scenario was in place for the SSBN fleet (far less detectable). Although the portrayed scenario was possible, I consider it's success to the enemies advantage, to have been far less likely than indicated.
