tom scott does a great video on this where he talks about translations in his videos with regards to puns, where the translations dont really make sense because the pun is lost, and so they often design their own puns, or simply explain the joke

This makes me think about an episode about Commodore Perry in Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. There was two subtitles, one was the Japanese subtitles(They were speaking in reverse but were purposefully mistranslating it) and the second sub was the fan translators actually translating what is being said in reverse.

Translating subtitles is a pretty challenging thing at times. Other times, especially in recent times, localizers go out of their way to needlessly bastardize the subtitles to insert their own agendas, personal views or what they consider to be funny jokes even though the original context isn't supposed to be joking at all. Which is one reason why Japan has started to pull back from American localization for constantly doing as they please with their works.

That's why I liked fan subbed anime in the early 2000s. Many jokes would just be explained and it made it fun to watch and learn about cultural facts. Animes like Bakemonogatari go so hard into cultural notes sometimes, or School Rumble also has some deep cuts into Japanese culture. Fan subs are superior to official releases because the official ones limit it to words said, while fan subs would just put cultural bubbles to explain things and color code text.

There's also an issue of inaccurately translated subs and dubs being done with an agenda

In stranger things there's a joke from the weed obsessed dude who made a birdhouse that looks like Marijuana. "It's a weeder, or a feeder." And the Spanish translators captured that joke PERFECTLY. They said that it's an animal feeder, or a smokehouse. Keeping the rhyme. "Es un comedero, o un fumadero." Also when they're playing D&D, they yell "Hasta al muerto!" It means "to the death", and it's what you say charging into battle. We fight until death. It's honestly quality craftsmanship. They even got Spanish speakers to use a Russian accent for the Soviet prison scenes.

I grew up with a deaf mother so I've gotten good at reading subtitles and watching stuff, and when I first watched Naruto in subbed I was like "you've been trained for this" 😂😂 so it really dont bother me either way. Though I guess not having to read the captions is a plus

My favourite book translating fun fact was how the German publisher for some of the early Terry Pratchett Discworld books just straight-up put an ad for soup into of the books.

Okay, Um Actually, I've been trying to get an answer to this but I've never actually got one: what's the hard evidence for this claim? Because every single article I've found about this links back to a single tweet without any proof whatsoever, not even a screenshot. I desperately need to see the og Ghost Stories with accurate English subtitles. I love the dub so much, it's absolutely hilarious but since I know the story behind the dub I know there's so much going on that I'm missing from the og.

yeah, but the only reason King of the Hill needs to be watched dub is because the comedy comes from all the American jokes and references like a translated Japanese father just shouting Bobby! shoot more guns, cook on more propane grill! comes off more annoying and not as funny as the Hank Hill voice going, God damn it, BOBBBBYYYY

This is why dub is so much better because if you’re even reading sir, you still don’t know the language so you’re not going to get anything anyway and so the subtitle words are wrong either way it go, so why not listen to it in your first language

So I write this on August 28th, one day after Nintendo direct showed Goat Simulator 3 for Switch. And let me tell you - the effort of the German subbers to translate the jokes and change it to fit the German speech pattern is in - flipping - sane.

I primarily read manga, so I greatly prefer the asterisk translator notes. That cultural insight is part of the reason I read more than I watch because there can be a disconnect during ooc moments that have clearly been altered to target a western audience.

Subs and Dubs are an art form in their own right. I prefer subs for the anime I've seen, to hear the emotion in the original, but dubs allow voice actors to localize the meaning into different memetic cultures, using different references and auditory subtext. There are many other benefits and drawbacks to each, as translation is always an imperfect process, but it can be as beautiful as it is challenging.

It's been decades. It's still too fuckin soon.

Localizers are a cursed breed... I honestly hate how much over-translation happens. I remember the glory days of watching shows with subs that made almost no sense until you had watched two or three of them.

As soon as he said “played an animal in multiple Disney films” I immediately knew it was Alan Tudyk

this is a huge thing in the game series ace attorney, where most characters have pun names. so the english localisation gives them all english pun names instead of their original japanese ones. usually renaming characters in localisations is looked down upon, but ace attorney wouldnt be the same without punny names. theres also one chapter where a young girl misinterprets a set of instructions left for her because she cant read very well. in japanese, she cant read kanji, and mistakes "splendid" (pronounced karee) for "curry" (also pronounced karee). the localisation team did a great job with this, changing it to her mistaking "gravely roast" for "gravy roast"!

not to worry apparently alot of translators dont even know the home language and are proud of the fact!

well not only do you have to translate it, you also need to localize it

The funniest thing about the king of the Hill thing is because boomhauer is unintelligible as a joke when he is subtitled they have to write him specific lines. So he has entire jokes that are specific to the subs.

Yes that is why FUNimation has just given up and puts their politics into anime.

The reason why subs don't always translate exactly is because it is also part localisation. Sometimes the script has something in it an English speaking audience won't understand and so it is generally the job of whoever is making the subs to work out how to communicate the idea even if they have to say it completely differently

A good translator is worth a thousand voice actors. There are 2 subs which stand above and beyond as good examples, one being a JJBA Pt2 translation which tried to copy Joseph's speaking styles depending on the scene, while not trying to stray from what was literally said. The other was Eureka Seven, where some madman decided to color code every. Single. Character. Every single character had a unique color to the text outline, with Eureka being a blue, Renton being red, background characters having black outlines, and everyone else having purples and greens and oranges and yellows. It also had literal sayings and TN interjections of what they meant, and even the OPENING AND ENDING HAD FULLY STYLIZED SUBTITLES. Actually the best translation i have ever seen. Conversely there are the bad ones...

I watched a dubbed anime that of course had plenty of female objectification in it, then watched the subbed and the objectification was cut in half. 🤷
