It really depends on what you are looking for. If the images are only ever going to be seen on a screen then the 16-80 is a very good, lightweight lens. If you are going to print large format images, then the 16-55 is a better but much more expensive option

Although the use of a third party camera app may not be, to some, the ideal way to use the iPhone camera, I think it would be a more accurate comparison between the RAW files if you were to use an app like Reeflex that allows you to shoot RAW as opposed to ProRAW. The RAW setting in Reeflex doesn't use the Apple computational stuff like Deep Fusion, SmartHDR, Noise Reduction, etc. Reeflex also has the ability to shoot ProRAW, JPG and HEIF, but the RAW option would give you a more fair comparison. Doing so would likely show that the Fujifilm gives better image quality due to the larger sensor, and as an iPhone only photographer (not professional for those who might jump all over that admission), as much as I like using the iPhone, I'm fully aware that traditional cameras will produce a better image. I used to have a Canon DSLR and all the fixings, but I'm quite happy to use the iPhone and even take a photographic approach to it. It's my camera of choice. And yes, it is a real camera.

I felt that for this test, it was important to compare like for like, ie the default app with all it's baked in computational photography against the standard Fuji RAWs. I am aware of other apps, but many of them do not output the 48mp image, dropping to a 24mp image.

The idea to edit the HEIC and JPEG with the ProRaw settings was to show that the much larger file size really is worth it if you want to do serious editing in post production. To show that I felt it was right to apply the same settings to all three file types

Hi Jason. I’ve recently discovered you on the socials and just subscribed to your channel here. I’ll touch on two points you brought up in this video. 1. The issue of camera snobbery. Seven years ago I made the decision to sell my DSLR gear and become a mobile photographer shooting with an iPhone. This has done more for my photographic life than anything I did or could have done with a DSLR. I have the longest running podcast dedicated solely to iPhone photography and I’ve recently published a book about macro photography with the iPhone. Over the years I’ve heard photographers who use traditional cameras make comments that deny the fact that the iPhone is a real camera. You are the first one who has actually stated a justifiable reason for any such claim by saying it’s because they’re good enough at their craft that they can determine what settings to use to make the capture. While I see that as a justification, I still don’t think there’s room in the photography space for this kind of snobbery. We are all artists who just paint with different brushes. 2. How I get out of a creative rut. I find macro photography to be a great way to revive my creativity because once I start finding subjects, the photos just keep coming. I look forward to more of your videos. Cheers, Greg
@JasonRowPhotography
@JasonRowPhotography 5 күн бұрын
I agree about the phone snobbery, take a look at some of the comments on my iPhone vs Fujifilm video. I think the point I was trying to make regarding using iPhones (smartphones) was that if you understand the technical elements of shooting, especially with a larger camera, you should not be concerned about allowing Apple/Samsung et all choose some of those setting for you. I think a lot of phone snobbery comes from people believing that to take a photo you should make all the settings, when in reality allowing a phone to control certain elements, frees your mind up to be more creative. Macro is not something I have really concentrated on. although I believe the iPhone 15 Pro can do decent macro. I t would have to be flora rather than fauna though as I have an almost paranoid fear of bugs :)

To me at least the difference is stark. The processing on the iphone shot makes it look artificial and ugly (not your editing, bit what apple does internally). It is far from a true raw. The easiest way to see that is the blue sky in the first shot. Dynamic range scales with sensor size, so the iphone's must be worse - hence the blue sky is an hdr effect in a "raw" photo. Resolution is also on a different level. While it's difficult to resolve 40 megapixels on aps-c and the 16-80 certainly doesn't it is possible, and the interchangeable nature of the xh2 lets one accomplish it. The iphone resolves around 10-12 megapixels; not only is the sensor not a true 48mp (it has 48m pixels, but only 12m micro lenses and a 12mp bayer filter) but the optical system simply cannon resolve such a dense sensor. For the xh2's pixel size diffraction affects the image at apertures smaller than 5.6, the iphone's are much smaller still. While the iphone's camera has been improving over the past few generations, those steps pale in comparison to how far it is still from any serious camera. Frankly I don't think it is possible for a iphone sized sensor to reach the optical performance of an xh2, and computation still has well over a decade until it can make up for the difference. The iphone is nice if you don't happen to have a camera on you, but in no situation would I pick it if i had the chance to bring something else. Side note, I own both the 15 pro and the xh2 among other cameras. I'm not just talking specs; I have used both of them.

I do some heavy editing, increasing contrast quite a bit, and I've had issues with banding and halos even with big sensors. Something to keep in mind when using the iphone. There's a lot of people that don't want to believe just how powerful smartphones have become for photography (just see some of the comments). That said, they still have some limitations and photography will always be about using the right tool for the job. However, for many images, an iPhone or Android will take incredible images. Shooting RAW gives those images a lot more leeway in editing

@@JasonRowPhotography ISO also scales with crop factor, for example at ISO450, it should equal 24mm f/6.4 at ISO3200 on FF - ISO formula is ISO*(CropFactor*2). For video at least the native ISO is 1200 on the iPhone which is roughly equivalent to ISO 9000 on FF - being a Sony sensor, it seems to share some of the characteristics of cameras like the A7S3, also being 48 megapixels quad bayer and it actually beats the Fuji in dynamic range in video with an appropriately matched lens and ND filter. For photos, it's usually the lower the ISO the better, but again ISO50 on the iPhone would be the equivalent of something like ISO400 on APS-C, so worth matching that for a 100% fair comparison, you'll find it's even closer then, especially in dynamic range and noise levels.

I would use bracketing if I was doing an iPhone. I would take three images and stack them. I'm not sure if the iPhone does that. I'm pretty sure it would. The reason I prefer cameras over. Phones is not so much the Photography quality. It's actually about the experience when you're using a camera it is tactile and it is buttons and you become immersed in the process. Whereas is when you are using phone you are just looking for that instant photo. No one talks about the mindfulness suspect of Photography because that's the way I teach Photography and one of the things I teach is allows students to immerse themselves in the experience and they just don't get that with a phone. The other thing that happens with phone photographers is as soon as you get a pop-up they will answer their message or their phone call or whatever because no one put their phone into Aeroplane Mode. Well not many people do anyway.
@JasonRowPhotography
@JasonRowPhotography 12 күн бұрын
Whilst I am sure bracketing is available on some third party apps, to me the idea of doing that and then HDR merging negates the real reason for using a smartphone, freedom. Whilst I agree there is a good reason for newcomers to photography to embrace the tactile feel of a larger camera, the use of a smartphone can be creatively liberating. It frees you from having to make multiple technical decisions and allows you to focus on the creative. As for mindfulness, perhaps look at my video on shooting in Edinburgh. It was literally the act of shooting an iPhone over my larger Fuji system that massively improved my wellbeing. Regarding messages and calls, you get low battery and card full warnings on larger cameras, these can also break creativity if you allow them. The key is, not to allow them,

I am all in Fujifilm, with 3 x GFX bodies, that is 2 x GFX50S and the grips which I love, a GFX50Sll, which I appreciate for the IBIS but less for the ergonomics, a couple of X-H2's, XT4's, XT3's and a X-T20. Although the output on all of them are outstanding and overkill for most applications, I find the output of the GFX sensor more pleasing than that of the X-H2 and cleaner at their native iso's. I may be getting a GFX100 series, but still not sure as the output of the GFX50 sensor is so spectacular, I may not need to do so unless I need faster continuous AF. But for all intent and purpose, even 26mp is overkill.

For me this shows up the weakness of the 40MP sensor in tonality compared to the medium-format, especially in the fall-off of the highlights. I know you've done some heavy editing, but there's a stark difference between the two in the way the highlights in the sky are rendered, even at the lower ISOs. I sold my GFX50R and replaced it with an X-T5 when it came out. The X-T5 is leaps and bounds ahead in terms of portability, ergonomics and speed, but I'm missing that tonality and "depth" from the MF sensor; so much so that I've ordered a (relatively) cheap 50S to use when I know that tonality and fine detail are going to be especially important. I shoot quite a lot of astro, which the 50R particularly struggled with (very noisy viewfinder in low light) and I do get much better results with the X-T5. So, for me, although it's an extravagance, I'll be running two systems.

At least on my two copies that I went through before giving up on the 100-400, it was noticeably soft on the long end even on my 26mp sensor xt3. Your opening remarks are quite misleading - Fuji has never said it doesn't recommend this lens (or any other not on their infamous list!) What it does say is "this is a list of all the current lens that will resolve the new 40mp sensor. It also says...albeit in the small print at the bottom....that all of it's lenses not on the list (including the 16-80) will perform as well, if not better, with the new sensor. This is because the non listed lenses will resolve between 30 and 35mp depending on the lens, so this is more than you would get from the older 26mp sensor and therefore a better performance. They have actually teamed up this lens with the XT5 as a kit....they wouldn't do that if it they actually said it wasn't recommended. This has been a bad move by Fuji to issue that list and confusing people by doing so.

Not really helpful for people that have Facebook pages for their work, or at all given that Insta and FB are both owned by Meta. But thanks for the comment

In my experience on the Fuji film XT5 and my GFX50s ii (and I've done similar experiments myself) these are my numbers that I find that I can still get very sharp photos....F10 fine on XT5, F16 fine on the GFX 50s ii and yes, I shoot professionally in the landscape space and I shoot weddings as well obviously I'm not shooting wedding photos at those kind of numbers but I've shot a lot of landscapes and printed a lot of work over the last seven or eight years. I haven't found F10 on the XT5 to have any diffraction. F13 yup I can see diffraction.....F10 is what i would use depending on what Im shooting ...on My GFX 50s ii I shot F14 for landscapes. And yes, lenses make a difference. I've used the 8 to 16 mm on the XT5 and I've used the Viltrox 13mm on the XT5. I have used the 20 to 35 and 100 to 200 on my GFX so good lenses does help also where you focus which you did not mention is critical. You did not mention once where you focus and this is critical to image sharpness. One critical aspect also that you didn't mention is hyper focal method where you focus will determine how much you're out of focus area is sharp as well. This is critical to retaining sharpness in images. It's just a point that I tell my students that I teach where to focus is critically important that's not necessarily defraction that's actually just image sharpness. I'm not sure if you use the hyperfocal method or not.? And this is critical, which I know you didn't mention but maybe that's something you could've added as well great video and yes, I've hit the subscribe button. I'm also on the FujiFilm Facebook page as well.

Thanks for the sub. You are right hyperfocal distance is very important. However I did not talk about it in this video as I was concentrating on the effect and progression of diffraction as the aperture stops down. Each of the images were examined at the exact point of focus to make the test relevant. Using hyperfocal distance does, of course, allow you to use wider apertures to get deeper DofF and avoid some of the effects of diffraction

The xh-2 is a 40meg sensor and diffraction starts about f8 but how about on a 26meg Fuji ? Would diffraction start around f11 instead?

Possibly, it might kick in between f8 and f11. There is no hard and fast rule as it will depend on the lens used. The only real way is to shoot some tests on a tripod and work out where you think the image quality becomes unacceptable

I have a classic Canon 30D I'll trade you for that Full Frame Fuji!! ?? Deal? LOL, I shot for years on a Mamiya 645 (Film) I have only held the Digital Fuji FF once, and it's sweet!! Great video!

Had a 645 myself many years ago. The GFX is probably as close as you can get to the old 645 format. It's 27% larger in sensor area than a FF 35mm camera and it really shows. Thanks for the offer on the Canon, but sadly I will have to decline :)

I dont think anyone says F22 is a great aperture for shooting anything other than one-shot macro. Who has ever told you this?

Plenty of articles online about why you should shoot f22. Virtually none of them tell you about diffraction

There’s even an article from Adobe about it. It lists possible unsharpness as a downside but doesn’t explain why or how it happens
