I love it! Always great to see your projects! Our Oregon trip this year is going to be soon, we will go to Astoria, then travel down the coast toward Tillamook. How is your dory holding up for you?

Great project to accomplish before the weather gets nasty. And this winter you will have a nice dry place to work on projects. Did I hear you mention a boat? New crabbing skiff? Door two coming up I hope!

Hey Eric, mighty fine door you assembled there. I was wondering if you might have considered a barn door configuration? Anyway really enjoy you getting things done around your place. Thanks much for sharing!

I considered several styles, but this is the only configuration I could come up with to conform to land slope and roof line yet allow full-width access, just in case I build a boat in there.

I watched your fishing and crabbing videos and am intrigued with your boat! 🙂 She's lovely. What's her history and make, do you know? Or did you perhaps even build her yourself? Length? 18(?) Love the flat bottom and dagger/center board set up. I've had several flat bottom wooden boats with centerboards and loved them all. 👍👍👍

Here is the link to my building the late Jeff Spira's "Tillamook" dory. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/auCKldaYq9_deWg.html I've not seen daggerboards in any boats other than sailboats. I didn't think I could be the only person who thought of it.

Have you considered using a segmented belt? That would allow you to make a belt of the correct length while mitigating vibration.

I sold that lathe two years ago, so it's somebody else's problem now. But, no, I hadn't considered the belt you describe. I didn't know such a thing existed.

Just watching you on your knees made mine hurt! I built a 20" platform to raise my mill up so i dont have to bend over much to remove my lumber. I have a small excavator to load logs so i dont need a ramp to roll logs up to get them on the mill. Its about the same height as the trailer frame so it gives me lots of room under for the clamps to hang down.
@OregonOldTimer
@OregonOldTimer Ай бұрын
Mill height is a trade-off, all right. If I had a tractor to lift logs, putting the mill higher would be better. If I milled only small logs, loading onto a raised mill by hand would be doable. But by having the mill on the ground, my back gets plenty of exercise.

@OregonOldTimer
@OregonOldTimer Ай бұрын
I regard bending over and picking things up as a free version of what others pay gyms for. When I was 15, I was a scrawny pin boy in a bowling alley. After one busy league night, I calculated I'd picked up 19 tons of pins and balls from floor level to waist height. I couldn't believe it. Showed my calculations to the boss. He looked them over and said I may have figured it too light. A few years later, a doctor remarked on the musculature of my back. I told him of my early job. Ah, he said.

Ha! I'm an ole cougar myself and I knew there was a better clamp. I called and talked to Woodland (and I do like them a lot) but they said no. I was about to order anyway and and suss it out but your video sealed the deal for sure. Had there been any issues? I am new at this and having fun building my shed as first project. Thanks for your knowledge ....for what use is it without sharing?! (retired teacher)
@OregonOldTimer
@OregonOldTimer Ай бұрын
The only negative to this installation is, the size of the log or cant I can use it on is less than with the standard clamps. However, one viewer suggest that, if I'd mounted it UNDER the track, I'd have more travel. I use the cam clamp all the time and seldom need to also use the screw clamps.

Was watching the left hand level wind in action and was thinking it would be very awkward. Those Shakespeare ugly stick Rods are some of the best value rods available. Did you know they have a life time warranty that they actually honour. Not only that I had them custom make a few rods for some special setups I was using. I’ve had dozens of different brands of rods over the years, but if I’m setting up gear for communal use, those ugly sticks are fantastic. These modern inexpensive rods are very useable, and I don’t cry when guests damage them. Nice fishing boat !

We stopped at a sporting goods store on the way home from a previous salmon trip during which I broke a rod. Bought Ugly Sticks for both of us. Didn't know about the lifetime warranty, but I doubt we'll ever have to use it.
