I have a big goober Brahma rooster and a suspicion that one or more of my 13 new kids are also a rooster.. I brought the Brahma into the baby pen the other day and there was a bit of hostility in the air lol

Raising chick's are good for people with depression or PTSD and are a pleasure. I raised them as a little boy and had the best years of my childhood..very good memories. My wife raising chickens here in the Philippines 🇵🇭 and being us both pleasure and joy.😊

I just got 6 chicks today!

My chicken math is a little off haha. I bought 6 chicks for egger and still only have 6 payers but I did buy 10 broilers hahaha which I plan to process soon but and getting 10 more to process before winter starts so for 2 weeks we will have 26 chickens and we have 16 for around 3 months out of the year other than that we just have the 6

Chicken math is real... I have 16 hens and 44 baby chicks. My rooster passed away so I let my hens hatch the eggs and I incubated some. I have 2 broody hens co-parenting 35 chicks and then I have 9 chicks living in the house they hatched a few days after the initial 35 and I figured my hens couldn't handle anymore. The chicks are a little over a week old and already know I am the food person. They come running to me as if I was their 3rd mother. Too cute. I've had chickens my entire life. They are usually very smart and sociable. Several of mine know their names, come when called or answer when spoken to. If you spend enough time with them they can learn human habits and tricks. A super smart hen I had years ago understood certain hand gestures that only a very well trained dog might understand. She was my emotional support animal. I let her sleep in my bed with me. I never made her do anything against her will. Our relationship was mutual. She wanted to be with me and would get upset if she didn't know where I was. She lived a happy life with fulfillment. I let her raise chicks a few times, let her have or do anything her heart desired... she even had a pink pillow with her name on it ❤

I thought chicken math was when you get 4 hens and a rooster and then spend $768 on a coop, run, and accessories so you can have free eggs.

I wish chicken math worked beginning with 0 chickens 😢

Coming up on 32 and going from living a Portland Metro lifestyle to a ranch further west in the mountains? I find it more enjoyable than dealing with the daily traffic of I-5. The passive aggressive people. The stress of wondering if I can afford eggs. Investing my time to learn these skills has already paid off and im excited to see how far I can go. Going back to ye olden ways as you can say is... enlightening. You appreciate life more, at least I do.

I not have s problem with chicken math. I only hatching what my freezer needs for the year and awitch some egg layers out every year on a 3 year rotation. Then you stay consistent with egg amount mostly. A third every year i replace. You can get leg bands in different colors but not add till they grown with the rest of your meat birds.

Yep. In the beginning there's about 3 or 4 hens for eggs...then 20 years later you're tending 60 laying hens & raising 1600 meat chickens in the calendar year, & you're asking yourself, "How did we get here?" Well, chicken math...it's a real thing. Cute, cute short...really enjoyed it!

Yeah you gotta be careful about that ... Baby chicks dont do well alone so you gotta get at least 6 in case some of them did to infant death syndrome or failure to thrive. Very common for chickens. I got roughly... 24 baby chicks... Had them in a large tub made into a makeshift brooder. They had hidey holes, warm spots, purified water wirh vitamins and electrolytes, hand mixed feed wirh herbs and chick grit. Went through them EVERY NIGHT to check for pasty butt and to just generally love on and talk to them. They were well adjusted, loved humans, every single one of those 24 made it to their first growth spurt. Do you want to know how many of those are left after they made it to the yard? 2. 1 rooster and 1 hen when i swear all 24 were Hens. There were some fully grown hens out there before the babies went out that are still there but the babies just couldn't handle it.

Also from northern WI! I noticed my male ducks looking dull, too. I have a breeding pen of Cuckoo Marans and one of Welsummers. The rest are “pets” because I love all the colors and personalities! 😂

We have a limit of 25 because thats the limit for the coop and run we built. We were going to buy five a year. Herre we are at end of our first year...OOPS.

That's cool I had a hen do 6 eggs all hatched that got another hen to sit and with her I got 15 hatched out.

Chickens are such awesome creatures. I am glad you post videos for those of us unable to raise them anymore.

I do the same thing with my chickens. Mama hens get their own coop with their babies and I have another one just for any extra babies I buy!
