"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.
Many people ask me where I am from and where I film my projects. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, and live in an area where off-grinding is easy because I have lots of land to build on and experiment with different buildings and materials. Everything I do is to try to be more self reliant, and to depend less on others. But that doesn't mean I don't like working together with other people on projects. Knowing people who have skills is part of being self reliant, and trading skills is a great way to get more things done!

It needs an exterior canopy. You can cook outside on the tailgate with a mini gas grill. Extra water storage in the granny space with a hose that goes to the outside for showering. Set up the solar panels on the roof so you can get a continuous charge on the battery pack. Put some plastic totes under the bed for more storage. You are going to want some ventilation for the heat and a heater for the cold months.

Kevin, you never cease to amaze. Particularly how you managed to build this for next to NOTHING. Down here in the lower 48, we are less than 5% of the entire world’s population, yet annually we consume over 40% of the world’s resources. I’m note sure what the stats are for Canada, but I would think it would be harder to find such resources because Canadians are more environmentally conscious. But you really are an inspiration. Just driving to work this evening my spouse and I saw a number of homeless people living in tents under a bridge when our GPS instructed us to take a shortcut. But just think of how many of them can be helped to a better place with your knowledge and know how. Keep those wonderfully inspiring videos coming!! 😇

I think my favourite project of yours, maybe I'm impartial because I grew up with a Dodge Caravan (from about the same era as the one you used, maybe half a decade earlier) that we did long road trips in, and it felt very roomy but I really liked the '03 dodge caravan with wood stove project I'm sure for most people they'd probably prefer this build, as it has more modern convenience with the portable power station, all the cooking equipment and the interior and exterior (with the custom built giant wooden cable wheels siding) is probably considered more stylish hopefully this video gets good views, and good referrals

For your round post it's empty space I wonder if you could create an opening (top/side)or a different post that could hold vertical slender things Screwdrivers, utensils, etc You already had access to Every inch of space. Luggage rack or Storage on top An awning to go over the tailgate or on the side of the truck Fold out shelves on the side of the truck A bubble window on top Also, your fish eyed peephole on the homeless home was an awesome find It's awesome as always And not as Frankenstein as some of the things you create Still lots of fun and so cool with your repurposed products.

Kevin, as usual, you have come up with another amazing build!!! I love it! I even like the green color...lolol... the only 2 things I would add, would be, either a functioning window so, you can open the door, and get some air flow when its hot, and perhaps make the window to the cab a sliding window, to function as a pass through... Kudos!!! 😄🥰😄

The blank wall could use a tree stencil or mountain range silhouette. Maybe a moose stencil or a buck? Just something to keep it from being a giant green box on top of a bright red truck. Other than that, maybe a small commode or an old bedpan for when it's freezing out and you need to do some business without having to put on all your gear first. Not sure you would need a small heater, just make some tea to warm up the place. Something like a magnetic screen to cover the door to keep bugs and critters out might be a boon so you don't get stifled in there, or a vent with a small computer fan so you can get fresh air. I hear that a small solar panel can run those fans, or even rechargeable battery packs. Hmm. Maybe I have more ideas than I thought.

nice and simple build... you need a powered vent on top-front for when needed, and solar panels on your roof... keep them a few centimeters over the roof [use spacers] to keep you in a shade, build them sturdy so they can hold some snow, plexiglass on top! And something else... do you know these ''heated jackets'' and vests?... They use some ''heating pads'' like miniature electric blankets... but you can get them from eBay very cheap, just a set of pads with the wiring and switch, use safety pins to hold them in a sleeping bag, and a power bank to run them... easy solution for cold nights... you can also add them to a jacket if you want...

I am a traveling er nurse that stays in my transit connect van I converted in the back. I use one of the bass pro sleeping bags rated for negative 20 Fahrenheit. I sleep all winter in t shirt and shorts. When it gets into negative temps I use battery powered socks. My feet are the only thing that gets cold. It’s not bad unzipped up to about 40. Anything above that and you’ll roast. And I use an electric blanket year round at home. Plus a Mr buddy heater is nice to wake up with. They are rated for enclosed spaces. I always have my windows cracked for extra protection and a CO detector. Love the build using garage doors with insulation!

As your comment on a sleeping bag you have to take one thing into consideration.... Survival! I've been all over the world and I've lived in Alaska and I've lived in Florida.. I now live in Michigan I got the best sleeping bag for the coldest temperature I possibly could but it also comes with a liner that's lightweight and a cold sleeve for inside.... just in case of an emergency.. you never know there could be some freak storm or freak accident when I'm driving down the road because I keep it in my car if I go off the road I got no heat I'll stay warm and survive.. The best thing about the liner is you can open it up and just use a liner as a cover on those really warm nights... plus mine comes with zippers about up to my knees with mesh inserts so you can open those up and have ventilation on your legs.. and of course the cold sleeve is for either the outside to keep it waterproof and during extreme cold or exposure to elements..or you can use it inside to keep you warm.. So my sleeping bag is good for minus 30 or 50 degrees below zero but if it's totally opened up and it's just the liner I slept in 90 degree weather...just saying

Not sure if it's AWD but it needs to be, differential locks, a modest lift kit and big all terrain tires. Also engine tune for some extra horsies, for better performance. You could really take it on some epic adventures!

For sleeping bags if you are a 3 season camper 20 degree synthetic classic shape will be fine and can be open or on top of it depending on the weather. If you winter camp you want lower but you probably would be better off with a down bag and possibly mummy style to keep your feet warmer. If you don't do much winter camping you get by with the 3 season and wear layers and a hat. Haven't watched to the end so don't know your whole sleep system but insulating yourself from the surface is important because the bag you are sleeping in will compress under you and loft is the primary thing doing the insulating. Depending on your location I would go to the more serious outdoor stores like REI, EMS, and Campmor. The ones in the big stores have ratings that aren't realistic. Look for a sale on a close out model and you will have a great deal on a quality bag that will last many seasons.

I love this! I was actually thinkin you should do this when I saw the truck in an earlier video. I can't wait to build a glamper like you.

Other than fiction fit, is it anchored at all? I was wondering about strong winds while driving

Hope I’m not jumping ahead, but if you check with liquid rubber, you are supposed to use their primer before tape, but that may just be over wood, not sure, but definitely over wood, then tape, then primer over tape. Then once it dries, coat with the liquid rubber. I did my whole deck with plywood, 6 coats of liquid rubber. Made a great dry area underneath, then enclosed it to make a workshop.

I roughed up the surface for better adhesion, but yeah i'd check with manufacturer recommendations before doing your project!
