I have a question. Indy quotes Martin Gilbert as evidence to the notion that belief Russia was at first neutral is false, but what makes his findings more accurate than other historians that believe they were neutral? His quote doesn't cite sources as much as it interprets the intentions of the pact. Are not other historians doing the same thing?

My wife's great grandfather was a Polish soldier at the north-eastern border and was captured by the Russians in Sept 1939. He managed to escape the same night and sent instructions to his family to abandon their home and get away. He eventually joined the Polish Second Corpus in North Africa and fought through to Italy and Monte Cassino. After the war he made England his home. He was Franciszek Solarski. Hero to our family.

IN September 1939, my uncle was a master corporal based in Zamosc garrison 9th Legions Infantry Regiment of the elite 3rd Legions Infantry Division. On Sep 13th his group under Colonel Czeslaw Czajkowski set out to Kovel, where Polish troops were concentrating in order to form additional resistance in Eastern Poland, focusing on Prypets marshes, where German forces would have no advantage due to technical superiority. On Sep 18th, after Soviet invasion, commanding officer decided to release all soldiers of Ukrainian and Belarussian origin and formed the Group, which consisted of 4 infantry regiments, one cavalry regiment, engineer battalion and 2 artillery battalions. This group headed first south to Hungarian border, but was soon engaged by Red Army, then turned west towards Zamosc and fought continuously with both Soviets and Germans (27th Infantry Division) until the remaining troops were dispersed in Janow Lubelski forests. The Group leader was Colonel Leon Koc. My uncle name was Zbigniew De Corde, captain of the Polish Army.

@@WorldWarTwo thanks for the quick response. Really appreciate it. Im not arguing the reason. Which is probably right. Im still a little disappointed with the fact that in this episode this was passed lightly and with little reflection on it. England declared war to a country that posed a threat to the freedom of the Poles. So far so good. Clearly the good guys are the English for the press. Big brother protecting younger brother. A few weeks later another country does the same and nothing happens. So if your argument is morale ground then you have to stick with it, or you revisit it altogether. Germany back in 1939, though dictatortship and already starting to show examples of the atrocities that is capable to do was a mere shadow of what the Soviet Union already did by killing millions and millions of her own during Soviet ruling. Bolchevism was already seen as a threat and horrors of what was capable of doing well known. So if you start a war to defend a weak country you do it to any agressor. Not to the ones you pick. Anyway thanks. Its all politicis, nobody cared about the poles who fought braver than any other ally army. Looking forward for more great episodes!

@worldwar-2militaryscalemod186
@worldwar-2militaryscalemod186 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. Poland is in Eastern Europe. UK and France could not just send troops there by land. Even by air, they would have to maybe fly over Germany. So geographically Poland was screwed, sandwich between Germany and USSR. Unlike the invasion of Belgium, UK and France was able to assemble and attack from France. That is why Hitler was surprised when UK and France declared war when Germany attacked Poland, as he thinks UK/France would do nothing just like when he took over Austria and Czechoslovakia. Well imagine if UK/France let Hitler grew more powerful and let him take Europe, one country at a time. That would...... led to many possibilities as to the outcome of World War-2.
@kwtr1609
@kwtr1609 2 жыл бұрын
@@worldwar-2militaryscalemod186 You forget, that UK and France made a guarantee for Poland. But when the Spviets attacked Poland, the British and France did nothing. Also, when Germany invaded the Benelux states, British and France retreated, and Belgium and Netherlands were left alone and foced to capitulate. The british could have also prevented Germany from taking Norway, stoping iron imports from Sweden, and ending the war early.
@worldwar-2militaryscalemod186
@worldwar-2militaryscalemod186 2 жыл бұрын
@@kwtr1609 Right. I think UK and France was late in mobilizing towards Belgium. By the time they were on their way, Germany was wreaking havoc in Belgium. Well Hitler was hoping for them to meet the Germans in Belgium so he could flank UK/France from the Ardennes. I think UK and France were just denying the fact that war is inevitable, they may have in mind the destruction of World War-1 and want to avoid it. Even appeasing Hitler in the late 1930s. Neville Chamberlain traveled to Germany to give Hilter what he wants, gets a signed paper of him and Hitler, then saying war is avoided. The world was not ready for another war even if it was already knocking on the door of the major powers. UK had operation or commando raid in Norway, for a short time but eventually considered the situation there untenable. I think Germany had just a better military strategy in the early years of World War-2, they even occupy France, UK major ally. But we all know at the end Hilter bit more than he could chew.

And all of Eastern Europe fell to Stalin because he planned it that way -- and the Allies had no plan for what to do when Stalin broke his promise to allow free and fair elections in occupied Eastern Europe. Of course, if we had somehow opened that "Second Front" a year or two earlier the way Stalin and Molotov insisted, we might also have reached Berlin and even Eastern Europe before the Soviets did. I was going through my grandpa's attic years ago after he passed away, and stumbled upon some old newspapers from 1939. I remember being surprised how all the news stories and all the opinion commentaries very clearly referred to the USSR and Nazi Germany as the prime enemies. From the western point of view, everyone fully expected the big baddies of the upcoming world war to be Germany, the USSR, and Japan. I was surprised because I'd always seen the USSR depicted as being very much firmly on the Allied side in WW2, when in reality, it could have played out very differently. It took the whole world to overcome Germany and Japan; now imagine if the USSR, the country that tied down 75% of the German military during the war, was instead lending its might to the Axis. Thank goodness Hitler was such a fool as to insist on his ill-conceived of the USSR.

USSR could't be a Hitler's allie. It is impossible. Their ideologies were totally opposed. The Nazis rised becouse they positionated themselves as anticommunists. Tottaly different economic, social and ideological systems. The war between them was inevitable. The Non-agression pact was a try to deley the inicion of war with germany and to prevent the anticommunist's alliance between Hitler and other capitalist countries (France and England)

So... Hitler wanted to get the allies to declare war on the Soviet Union, so that he later could offer them to switch sides when it became apparent that they could not defeat USSR, and then he would commit Germany's armies against the red army, to aid the allies, all the while making sure to commit his troops just enough to keep the allies engaged, but still making them take most of the burdens, in order to weaken them and then turn on the allies later when the USSR were defeated. Then it didn't turn out like that and he was like "Aaaaaw shit.... Yea.."

@johndoe6298
@johndoe6298 4 жыл бұрын
@@lortea Not well known, certainly. But unknown? I wouldn't go that far. The fact that some English-speakers (likely Westerners) have added it to Wikipedia shows that there is some awareness of it, both among professional historians and amateur enthusiasts - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NKVD_prisoner_massacres. Any lack of awareness of those events is not confined to those specifically, but merely indicative of wider ignorance of WW2 in Eastern Europe. Remember, regions where the war in Europe was at its most bloody, brutal and destructive, where most of the fighting and dying would occur for much of the war's duration, ended up behind the Iron Curtain afterwards. Western access to such places, witnesses, survivors and records was incredibly limited. Even after Stalin's death, Soviet politicians were not entirely honest in public regarding the USSR's conduct during the war, wishing to sweep the "excesses" of the Stalin-era under the carpet (with the notably exception of Nikita Khrushchev's so-called Secret Speech of 1956) to preserve the image of the Great Patriotic War, given how much the Soviet population had suffered. So for over 4 decades, Western understanding of WW2 in Europe was largely incomplete. Since the collapse of communism during 1989-91, historians have been playing catch-up to complete the picture decades after the events, but popular understanding always takes some time to catch-up with academia. So despite WW2 ending over 70 years ago, it is really only in the last 30-ish years that a much more accurate picture of the war has started to take shape. In fact, it could be argued that WW2 in Europe was not fully resolved until the final treaty was signed between the 2 Germany's (East & West) and the 4 Allied Powers in 1990 - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_on_the_Final_Settlement_with_Respect_to_Germany. By that logic, the Cold War was as much an extension of WW2 as it was a by-product of it. Because of the above, the myths and misconceptions that emerged during the Cold War have proven very difficult to shake off, whilst the geo-political stand-off itself added to them. For example, a recurring figure in this series is German chief of staff Franz Halder. After the war the US Army Historical Division hired him to head the write-up on their official history on the Eastern Front. This allowed him to be VERY SELECTIVE in what was published, namely omitting anything that made the Wehrmacht look bad and pinning everything (be it tactical-strategic mistakes or crimes against humanity) on Hitler, the Nazis and the SS and avoiding the military leadership's share of responsibility in a global calamity that had killed millions. Furthermore, other leading German generals (Guderian, Von Manstein, et al.) wrote their memoirs (particularly during the 1950s) which conveniently omitted the role of Nazi ideology (and thus any war crimes) in their part in the war. Around the same period, the new West German armed forces (Bundeswehr) was being established (who's officer corps included ex-Wehrmacht ones, particularly among its generals) and Cold War-era pragmatism meant that few in Western government circles who knew better were prepared to rock the boat in the new NATO alliance by digging up the past and irking their West German ally. Such things helped sanitise the reputation of the Wehrmacht in wider Western understanding of the war, creating the image of a highly efficient and apolitical force that didn't muddy its hands in Nazi atrocities (note the Clean Wehrmacht myth - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myth_of_the_clean_Wehrmacht) and was far superior to the Red Army throughout the war, but was merely overwhelmed by endless hordes from the East (Spoiler Alert, these generals lied through their ((bleep)) teeth - liar, liar pants on fire). From what I've seen so far, Indy & Co are doing a fine job steadily demolishing such myths (just as he did whilst working on The Great War channel), duly noting the Wehrmacht's role in war crimes, the unease of some German military personnel, the Soviet's share of atrocities and even the misconception of what Blitzkrieg is, or rather is not - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p8uabKeJl56RqKs.html. But as Operation Barbarossa gets underway, I have full confidence that the channel will cover the NKVD massacres as the Soviets withdraw.

Defiantly needs more attention, especially as there are 'historians' like Grover Furr who outright deny that the NKVD committed crimes against Polish prisoners, claims it was all done by the Nazis and that those committed by the NKVD were "justified retaliations to the Polish victory against the USSR in 1922". Sure the Nazis murdered millions of Poles, but that doesn't mean we should ignore or deny the ones committed by the Soviets.

It is a great series. I really appreciate the effort and work. It is however hard to agree that French and British could not stop Hilter. The Rich was very vulnerable in 1939. The attack from the West should completely change a direction of the II War. Poles can fight. The argument that Russian invasion closed the opportunity for French/British attract is likely false. Stalin attacked Poland o the 17 because he find out that Fri/Brt. did nothing. In fact, Hitler expected that he sticked at the same day and complained about this. Stalin simply calculated pros and coins. Finally, French/British signed alliance with Poles. Why they sing something if they could not deliver ?. It is simply betrayals. Most of the Poles defence plans based on the assumption that the treaty will be respected. At the end of a day, Hitler and Stalin grew because the ignorance of the West. Cheers Piotr

And the "annexed a ethnic Polish community in Czechoslovakia" part is also more complicated than that and goes all the way to the Czechoslovak invasion in January 1919, when the Czechoslovak state annexed these same lands despite earlier agreements with Warsaw to split them up. Not to mention that the annexation of Zaolzie was not hand in hand with German invasion, but rather an opportunistic land grab by our government in Warsaw. "You don’t make deals with the devil (Germany)" So like Ribbentrop-Molotov pact? "Don’t take others lands nobody likes being ruled by outsiders" - Soviet invasion of Ukraine in 1917, Soviet invasion on Finland in 1939, Soviet occupation of the Baltic states? Need I continue? Russia has a fair share in the guilt for starting WW2 even if it doesn't want to admit it. The Germans at the very least have the guts to admit they've made terrible things in their somewhat recent (it's just a century) history. Russia doesn't. Poles were trying to expand eastwards, invaded Western Ukrainian Republic and disputed with USSR territory. They took land up to, say, Kiev. After that succesful Soviet counter-offensive pushed them back up to Warsaw. After counter-offensive of poles both sides were excausted and so were forced to take status quo as new borders... for a time.

lortea no they were not living in those lands, in fact a very tiny amount did live there, with the exception of Lvov. In Western Belarus, many so called Poles are just Polonized Belarusians who adopted Catholicism after the Union of Lublin in 1569 uniting Poland with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Most people living in these lands were either Belarusian, Ukrainian, or Jewish. Only small pockets of Russians and Poles lived there and I mean very few.

@@jamesmcpherson8599 This isn't exactly correct. As per Piłsudski's views, they were all Poles - as in Polish citizens working for the Polish state. He and his political allies didn't discriminate based on peoples nationalities and ethnicities but their loyalties. It was the Endecja (ND - Narodowa Demokracja) that took control after Piłsudski's death that started forced polonization of those that weren't ethnic Poles. Furthermore, neither Ukraine nor Belarus were capable of surviving the post WW1 mess and have quickly fell to the Soviet invaders as well, until Polish forces annexed these lands into 2nd Polish Republic during the counter-offensive after our miraculous victory in Battle of Warsaw. Basically, these lands would've ended up in Soviet hands anyway and Poland just couldn't allow it due to strategic, cultural, political and ethnic reasons. And while backstabbing the Ukrainians in our joint defense against USSR is not something to be proud of, I will dare say that it is understandable why it happened.
