Although just looking into Ritter has led down a delightful rabbit-hole including László Almásy, the Long Range Desert Group and the peculiar death of Lady Dorothy Clayton. Facts used construct the fictional tale of ‘The English Patient’.

Some extra informations about Campaign in Poland from Polish books: 1) Average Polish infantry division had : 16429 soldiers,6937 horses,76 cars and trucks,320 light and 132 heavy machine guns,81 grenade launchers,20 mortars,30 cannons schneider 1897 75mm,12 howitzers100mm, 3 long range 105mm guns,3 heavy 155mm howitzers and only 4 AA 40mm bofors and also only 27 anti tank 37mm bofors guns per division.The difference was average German infantry division had more artillery ( 36 howitzers 105mm,12 heavy 155 mm howitzers , 26 light and heavy infantry guns ,54 mortars) , a lot more anti tank guns 37mm- 75 vs.polish 27.German division had a lot more motor transport 334 cars,615 trucks,527 motorcycles. 2) Polish cavalry was almost the only( apart from 10th motorised Cavalry Brigade) mobile force faster then infantry.Poles used horses because of economy .Price of the horse at that time was 300-500 złoty.Price for truck was 10,000 złoty.Polish cavalry still had more firepower than infantry per number of troops.Polish cavalry brigade with 4 regiments had 7184 soldiers ,16 75mm schneider 1897 guns,13 light tankettes,and 18 anti tank 37mm bofors guns.During Battle of Mokra on the 1st of September ,one Polish Volyhnska Cavalry Brigade with support from armoured train ,stopped for all day German 4th Panzer Division ( more that 300 tanks alone) and one infantry Division. 2a) Polish only 10th Motorised Cavalry Brigade with 47 tanks and 18 anti tank guns protected mountain passes south of Cracow against German 22nd Panzer Corp with 500 tanks.It took Germans 5 days to go 25 km. 3) Polish aviation industry sent better planes for export and worse fighters for Polish army.Polish PZL11C fighters had just 334 km/h top speed and four MGs.They send abroad better fighter PZL24 that had 435km/h top speed ,two 20mm cannons and two MGs. 4) Polish Navy was not practical for Poland .It had 4 large modern destroyers,one mine layer,five large submarines and 6 minesweepers.It was very clear for everyone that in case of war Kriegsmarine will have huge advantage over Polish Navy on small sea like Baltic Sea.Modern large ships were very expensive and some officers argued that money spent on large destroyer could be better spent on coastal defences.They critisized expensive "ocean ambitions" of Polish High Command.Three of Polish destroyers left to England even before war begun. 5)Polish High Command waisted great sacrifice and courage from Polish soldiers and made a few big mistakes ( lack of cooperation during Battle of Bzura between various Polish Armies etc.).Before the war Polish High Command made propaganda slogan :"Silni ,Zwarci i Gotowi" which means :" Strong,United and Ready".But after massive mistakes from Polish High Command ( not the troops who fought with great courage) and after Polish High command left Warsaw after just 7 days , Polish High Command was called :" Silni w gębie, zwarci przy żłobie ,gotowi do ucieczki" which means :"Strong in talking,United to keep power,Ready to escape" .One of Polish Generals named Dąb Biernacki commanding Army Prusy( that supposed to plug the gap between collapsing Army Łódź and Army Kraków) he literally fled his staff and troops and went to Warsaw. 6)Poland did not have to fight against Hitler .In October 1938 Germany offered Poland to be their allies .Obviously this could be very unequal "alliance" .Poland supposed to agree for exterritorial motorway between East Prussia and rest of Germany etc.After the war when Poles were very disappointed with attitude of the West and Soviets some Polish historians suggested that maybe it was better idea to join Germany like Romania or Hungary( not the Holocaust of course). 7) On the 18th of September German units approached small town Stawy pod Dęblinem .There was Arsenal called " Arsenal of Poland" It contained : 100000 Polish rifles 17000 German rifles 80000 French rifles 1500 modern heavy MGs 2600 light MGs 150 75 mm French and Russian artillery guns 80 100mm Polish howitzers 45 155 mm French howitzers 6 heavy 220 mm mortars So in the same time when across Poland local people tried to form local self defence units to defend their homes ,Polish High Command kept under lock equivalent of 7-8 infantry divisions.Shocking !!! .When Germans approached the arsenal Polish generals ordered arsenal to be destroyed..they didnt distribute the guns to locals to try create underground army 9) Poland was doomed right from the start .No country in the World could fight Germany and USSR in the same time .Polish ordinary soldier did their best .Most of Polish Generals and especially High Command waisted their effort. English is my second language so sorry for poor grammar.You have great show

The ammunition depot in Stawy was destroyed because the Germans were approaching the city and there was no way to defend it. What they managed (and they managed much more) was evacuated to the southeast. Besides, the Polish army's problem was not a lack of ammunition or small arms, but a lack of artillery and wheeled transport. Which, by the way, is evident from your calculation: lots of small arms, very little artillery. Distributing ammunition to the local population made no sense, just like organizing partisans in 1939. A partisan unit would not have been able to hold out for more than a few days and would have been destroyed.

September 27, 1939. Private Hans Schmidt of the 3rd Infantry Division is relieved that the besieged city of Warsaw has finally capitulated after weeks of fighting. 3 days later, his unit enters the ruined city, and soon after that, the final pockets of Polish resistance are eliminated. The thrill of victory in Poland boosts the morale of German and Soviet troops alike.

Because units are easy. In the real world you must always know what units you are using, at which point it doesn't matter what unit it is. Conversion factors are easy to memorize; there's only like 3 you need. This metrological imperialism is the mark of someone who doesn't actually work with units, who is of course someone whose opinion on the subject doesn't matter.

@Belagerungsmörser the Sheep You seem to be deeply confused. I didn't argue that the US system is superior, I argued that it doesn't matter, indeed that it can't matter in science and industry. Clearly that distinction is a bit much nuance for your towering intellect, and for that I'm sorry. Regardless of where you live, you have to be aware of and comfortable with any system. If you seriously imagine that living outside of the US insulates you from the need to be comfortable with imperial units, you're revealing yourself and someone who doesn't work in industry and whose opinion doesn't matter. I'm an engineer and I frequently get components whose datasheets use imperial measurements, and components which use metric. Invariably, both will be used in the same project. It is impossible to escape the requirement to be aware of and comfortable with any system of metrology.
@taufiqutomo
@taufiqutomo 4 жыл бұрын
Near the end of the video on Barbarossa logistics, Indy gave his opinion on the imperial vs metric stuff
@marshaul
@marshaul 4 жыл бұрын
@Belagerungsmörser the Sheep All of this is beside the point. Imperial units are in use in science and industry around the world. Whether this is due to history and tradition is irrelevant. 1. Metric units are defined from nature; there is no "true" or objective system of metrology. They are all equally arbitrary. The sole difference is a scaling factor. 2. The advantages of the metric system are essentially irrelevant in the age of computers and engineering notation. (The exact same convenience can be achieved in any units.) The same applies to the disadvantages of imperial units. 3. Because some systems or devices require backwards compatibility with legacy components, they continue to be made with imperial-based dimensions/spacing/pitch, and when working with these systems it is often more convenient to stay with the original units. Modern CAD tools allow seamless switching between units so you can pick and choose at any given moment what is most convenient to the current subsystem. 4. For these reasons, there is no end-run around familiarity with both major systems of metrology. If one finds himself uncomfortable with one or the other, the correct thing to do is fix himself, rather than whine about history and the state of the world. The deep irony here is that Americans who work in science and industry are all equally comfortable with both systems and few care much for this reason. The vast majority of the cultural imperialism on this issue comes from Europeans who imagine that they should be insulated from the onerous task of memorizing 3 or 4 conversion factors because "people really should use the better system (ours, naturally), shouldn't they!"

The generals resent him (Hitler) taking control of strategies (at 8:26)...well, what did they expect from a lunatic - thinking he can conquer the world! These were not medieval times, or even further back in history, tribes defending their fatherland. All you have to think of...two tyrants battled for more land/people etc but had no clue because they were completly arrogant and ignorant (it's not interesting enough for me to find how much education they received as boys - also, both Hitler and Satlin were punished with beatings by their fathers; respected their mothers who were literally helpless in protecting their boys. My degree in college was Humanities, and my seminar project was on these two monsters, so I had to find out a lot of stuff from the library (rermember that building with lots of books, compared to online resources). Thanks for this eye-opening episode...because I feel today's youth is completely in the dark about certain aspects of history which will be repeating, and soon...if it's not on a social media platform it doesn't count! Much is said about the war crimes committed by the Red Army in Germany. But seeing what Germany themselves did until the height of their power, they kind of brought it upon themselves.

Never justify one crime with another - it's even against our rules of conduct.

@@WorldWarTwo I apologise if that's how my comment was interpreted. I never said what the Red army did was right, just that the Nazis had nothing to say in defense, and neither do the Red Army men. Neither of them could claim to be victims of human rights abuses, without coming off as hypocrites.

Lwów became Polish city in 1349 when Kingdom of Ruthenia (1253-1349) was incorporated into Poland. It was very important Polish city until the partitions of Poland in 1772 when it was incorporated in Austro-Hungarian Empire. For more than 400 years it was one of main Polish cities. After WW1 Poland was recreated much more to the east than it is today (including Lviv, Ternopil in today Ukraine, Vilnius in today Lithuania and Hlybokaye in today Belarus). WW2 redrawn borders in much of Central and Eastern Europe and Lviv became Ukrainian city.
