Bond takes to the water for the thrilling LIVE AND LET DIE (1973) boat chase. The scene used 26 boats, 17 of which were destroyed. Screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz said: “I knew there was going to be a boat chase and until we started shooting, it just said, ‘The most terrific boat chase you’ve ever seen,’ because I never got around to writing it. That really happened as a result of going around the bayous and seeing the different stunts they could do.”

The first Bond film I ever owned on VHS when I was a little girl in the early 00s, courtesy of my grandfather. Each Christmas and birthday, I'd get the next one. The villainous men in this film look so handsome and incredible in those trousers, long legged. Gorgeous era that I wish I had lived through. And yes, this boat chase really is terrific and so well shot.

The reason this chase sequence works so well? Not just the awesome stunts and masterful directing and editing. It stands apart because it's a beautifully WRITTEN piece. What other cinematic chase contains such memorable dialogue, character introduction and development, and spot-on humor? Today's writers and directors need to study this sequence. Comparatively, they've got nuthin'.

This is the only Bond movie I watched after Sean Connery was not James Bond , to me after someone else takes over the lead role of the main character it is not the same movie or tv show. But this just my opinion.
@rmstitanic8163
@rmstitanic8163 Жыл бұрын
@@stevehaller6332 But it could be argued that Sean Connery wasn't the original first choice as James Bond. There was a number of actors that were considered before him, including Roger Moore. I know what you are saying. You kind of get used to a certain person playing a roll. But had James Bond not been offered to other actors after Sean Connery walked away from the part, then James Bond would have just ended. However, I'm worried about where they are going with the 007 roll in the future. I don't think it was a good idea to kill him off. Really stupid idea. And I don't like what I'm hearing about making him a different character just to fit in with modern day woke. If you change him, he is no longer James Bond. They have considered making a woman, black, gay, trans and God knows what else. Absolutely wrong. Ian Fleming I'm sure would be totally pissed off had he'd still been alive.

Of all the memorable characters in the Bond movies Sheriff J.W. Pepper is certainly in the top three, along with Odd Job and Jaws. His return in The Man with the Golden Gun is just as memorable. This gag set a world record of 150 feet, which stood for three years. The boat, a Glastron GT-150, was equippped with a Evenrude Starflite 175 that was highly modified. They damaged and destroyed many boats while filming the action scenes. The boat lawn skiing at the wedding took a few hulls (they kept hitting trees).

South of New Orleans follow LA 39 South past Phoenix, LA and you'll see Harlem Lane and that's the road the cars were parked on when the boats went flying over them. The current Google satellite pic has the canals covered in algae but it normally looks clear just like it did back in 1973. What the f....! 🤣 That's the only scene filmed around here, the rest of the boat scenes happened in Bayou Liberty and Irish Bayou around Slidell, LA and the last scene was in the New Orleans Marina where the door falls off the police car. To me, he never really suited the role of James Bond. He was too old and his style of acting was not right for the part. I know that he has had a long acting career playing many parts (one of his first roles being as Ivanhoe) but his best performances were in the movies "The Wild Geese" and "Gold"

ROGER MOORE IS JAMES BOND OO7 IN IAN FLEMING'S LIVE AND LET DIE Roger Moore makes a great debut with LALD..... it's just great to watch and feels very fresh after watching Connery's DAF..... And it also has a great villain and it also feels very fresh, as because most of the previous films had SPECTRE and BLOFELD as their main villain..... I just love this film and the humour presented by Sir Roger is so delightful to watch..... LIVE AND LET DIE may not be in my personal top 10 list but, whenever I watch this movie it just looks better..... LIVE AND LET DIE is just fantastic.....

Shortly after this film came out, Roger Moore published a Live And Let Die diary. There are lots of interesting facts in this book, such as Rodger Moore knocked out several front teeth in the filming of the scene when he lost control of his boat.

He lost some teeth? I didn't know that, unbelievable! I remember him in an interview when a reporter asked him if he got any injury when filming and he had to think a long time about it so I assumed there wasn't something serious 🤔

The first things to be filmed for the movie was all the boat stuff so when they arrived in Louisiana in early 1973 the director had Roger begin to familiarize himself with the boats as he did most all the driving except obviously for the jumps. When he got into the jet boat there's a scene where he's going straight at speed then the bayou turns and with a jet you have to keep power in the turn or else it won't turn. Roger got in a little hot and instinctively pulled back on the throttle which is what you can't do so he ended up going straight and colliding with the dock and boathouse where some of the crew was. It was a hell of a collision and he was injured and took a couple weeks to recover. Luckily the first few weeks was filming all the boat scenes with minimal or no dialouge so although he was hurting, he got through it. I think the first scene filmed where he actually said anything was when he was idling in the marina and maybe says Hello Felix.
