All of your hard work in making a nice wiring harness can quickly become a frustration when you have to service your wiring harness or engine and realize the harness has been passed through the firewall and terminated, leaving the harness stuck half on the engine side of the project and half on the interior side of the project with no way to remove the harness without cutting it apart.
With a connector bulkhead you can remove the harness from the firewall with a quarter turn of the connector and remove the engine without taking off every sensor, injector, coil connectors etc, and remove the harness from the ecu inside the car. This also leaves a very professional looking way to pass your wires through the firewall and a point to easily split the harness for troubleshooting.
This video is a tutorial for our connector bulkheads showing you everything you need to know to install and pin the Deutsch HD30 series connectors successfully your first time.

I am very happy you made this video! I recently started a role as a parts interpreter and had a customer come in yesterday asking if we could supply this type of connector. I was initially unsure of what he meant when he was talking about this connector and it's application. I was very intrigued by his questions and told him I would look into finding out what I could do and this video has helped me understand his queries much better. I can now go to work tomorrow better equipped to assist this customer in his search for some electrical components he is chasing for a rally car! Great content mate!

Wow finally a consumer canon plug setup! Mil spec hummers canon plugs were solder than crimped and we use silicon lube to help push the pins and female connectors through the rubber.
@Sevalecan
@Sevalecan 3 жыл бұрын
Solder then crimp? Not exactly preferred from my perspective. Some connectors use crimp only to hold the wire in place, then solder to make the connection. Generally speaking, a good crimp with high pressure will cold weld to the connector, and with a stranded wire leave it flexible and less likely to fatigue as it comes out of the terminal. We upgraded our wiring harnesses to Amphenol Canon crimp where I work in order to solve the issues we had with solder joints fatiguing and breaking the wire. So, proper crimp is 1. Stronger than solder, due to a cold weld instead of solder with weaker metals 2. More flexible, as the solder makes even stranded wire rigid, due to solder bridging all the gaps, 3. More conductive electrically. A cold weld through copper should provide superior conductivity over tin and other metals present in solder. That said, a lot of people try to crimp with blade type connectors or similar you can buy in the store, and they use the wrong tool. Need a proper crimp die that's matched to the terminal and the metal thickness. So that drove my father away from crimps for a long time, I didn't learn more about them and how to do it correctly until after he passed unfortunately.

Very nice I'm actually in the process of building a custom harness, and am trying to decide if I want to run the quick connect. I like the looks and the function behind it. My only issue is the tools for the job are rather $$$$ especially for a one time use. Then again maybe I could make it a little side job if I'm successful with my very first harness. I took that hp academy course to get a bit of knowledge and now it's got me hooked.
@mavenperformance
@mavenperformance 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment William, we agree the tool is a bit expensive for a one time use. See if you can borrow from a buddy or rent a pair, here is a link for rental www.wirecare.com/category/tools/wire-crimpers/deutsch-crimping-tools/hdt-48-00r-crimping-tool-for-size-12-20-solid-contacts-rental We highly recommend HPA (high performance academy) for tuning and wiring education, they produce great content. There are many opportunities for those who are competent in wiring/ building custom harnesses - many make a very good living doing it, or as you said make some extra race car money doing it on the side. Give is a call or send an email if you need anything

I like this style of Bkhd terminal very much. But: I got confused on a yachtjob back in 87. I am a pro tech, but the appn failed because I must have mismatched continuity despite careful attention. Wiring of plug and socket are mirror images in reverse on opposite sides of a bulkhead, where accuracy is essential. Divide and conquer could be a solution.

I am looking for tools to measure the resilience in the socket. I notice that some pins are loose in the sockets, but I do not know what the resistance should be. I thought I had found something, the DMC95, but it is used to check if the pin or socket is properly stuck in the connector.

I am looking at these for an experimental airplane. Even though they say they are for firewalls, I did not see any spec at the web site for temperature or fire resistance. What material is used in the center of the connector to hold the pins? Is it a fire resistant material? Or are these only for automotive use where firewall is pretty much just a generic term and has no real fire protection meaning?

Hello, I just got an HDP30 connector for my project car. As soon as I got it, I got excited and wanted to see the pin in the connector and went ahead and put it in before crimping the wire so I have no wire to pull on. Anyway, I can’t seem to get the pin out and am in need of some suggestions/help. TIA!
@mavenperformance
@mavenperformance 3 жыл бұрын
This could get tricky, but follow a similar method outlined in the video and try to get the removal tool over the pin and up to the shoulder like you would do if the the wire was present. This should release the tabs, since you don’t have a wire to pull on, try pushing on the terminal from the opposite side of the connector. (It still has to come out the same side it went in)

How on earth do you guys always have them snap right in like that? I have a hell of a time with these things, when I push them in the wires always bend and they're very hard to get in even with a plastic insertion tool.
@satishshinde8074
@satishshinde8074 4 жыл бұрын
The plastic insertion tools are such a waste. If its not just a couple of connectors that you want to assemble, you might want to get yourself metal insertion tools. If you happen to break the plastic tool while inside the connector, it might leave a tiny piece of plastic in the connector passage. that is enough to render it useless. even if you manage to get the plastic bit out, it might compromise the connector integrity.

Can you only have 1 AWG size on your wire for a specific pin hole in your mil-spec connector? Lets say i have AWG 20 and AWG 18 wires and i have a MIL-SPEC connector that fits AWG 20, could AWG 18 wires be used in this connector?
@mavenperformance
@mavenperformance 3 жыл бұрын
Timmy, the answer is NO- there are some options - you can use an 18 ga wire in a 20 ga terminal / location- look for a video in the next couple days we discuss what wire sizes can be used in what terminals and using banded terminals SEE CHART ON OUR WEBSITE UNDER TECH INFO/ PIN USAGE CHART

Will the 16 Ga slots on the bulkhead accept 14 Ga GXL automotive wire? AFAIK, the actual connectors are the same for 14 + 16 Ga. Also, on the weatherpack bulkhead connectors, there is a nice rubber seal for waterproofing, but I don't see a seal on the HD20 or HD30 Deutsch connections, so how does one waterproof the connection at the firewall?

@mavenperformance

Hi Derrick, you should be able to get wires for your engine through a 47 pin connector with planning, many use a 47/29 dual bulkhead to have some heavier 12 gauge for fans, headlights, fuel pumps etc as well as room for expanding in the future
