Replacing the crankshaft position sensor (cps, ckp) on my 01 Durango 4x4 with the 4.7 v8. May be the same with the 04-06 Durangos with the same 4.7 engine, may be similar to the 5.2 and 5.9 engines.

I appreciate this video, it shows the reality of back yard repair. Some things are just to much of a pain in the ass to do yourself when a mechanic with a hoist can do it in minutes. Thank you Author good job. Peter.

Easiest way I’ve found on these Mopar trucks to get the crank sensor out the easiest and quickest when they’re all rusted over like yours was to heat the area on the block and work it out back and forth (the sensor housing is all plastic so heat only the block! But get it toasty around the sensor hole, that will slightly melt the outer plastic where the sensor is stuck). On another Durango that I changed wasn’t cooperating with the torch method, and I had to take a drill and run a drill bit through the sensor almost all the way ( keep the drill bit centered and level so it goes in straight) and then put a screw into the drilled out hole and keep screwing it inward, once it hits the hard steel ring gear that the sensor reads it will start pushing the sensor out without damage to the ring gear inside the block and no metal shavings to worry about. Hope these ideas can help you out or anyone one else having this issue.

I know, even though I still showed how to do it- all because I didn't pop mine out because there was no reason to bust it up and risk anything if mine didn't need replaced, which it didn't. It still runs great, still haven't replaced it. It was the cam sensor which I believe I mentioned in the video and did replace in another video. It's youtube- somebody is always talking shit; they expect perfection in every video. Thing is, everbody's opinion of perfection is different. Some complain about a certain part while others praise the exact same part. Literally impossible to please everyone one here, so there is always hate not matter what you do. People are too entitled to just keep their mouth shut and move on, they think the whole world needs to hear their opinion. If it weren't for the fact that I'm trying to make my channel my career, I would delete all forms of social media because the toxicity is sickening... except for the few fine people like yourself. Thank you for the support.

I just now got mine out!! I took some bailing wire, wrapped it behind the bolt bracket and then stuffed it down the end by where the block is behind the sensor down in the little crevice, twisted it on one side and then pulled it up around the other side and made sure that I was pulling it straight out instead of pulling at an angle and the thing popped out so fast it almost hit me in the face I hardly had to put any muscle behind it. Been messing with this thing for five hours.

@@BuckeyeBallistics I don’t know about genius lol but I’m glad I finally got it out but sad thing is they didn’t fix my truck putting the new one in. This thing won’t Rev past 2500 RPMs and it won’t start on its own without me putting the gas pedal all the way to the floor when trying to start it, then it will start up, so I guess I’ll start running back through this thing again once I got some time off work this next week. It’s a 2006 Dodge Durango and it’s been a good truck and I hardly drive it because I drive my service van for my locksmith business all the time. Just got done replacing the whole AC system and the day after I get it done everything’s running fine & this happens 🤦‍♂️

If you drill a small hole through the piece that's still in there and run some 14 gauge wire (I believe that's the gauge I used) through it wiggle and pull it will pop out pretty quick. I had the same problem seemed free wiggling but couldn't get a good grip on it, until I drilled it, and ran a wire through.
@BuckeyeBallistics
@BuckeyeBallistics 3 жыл бұрын
If I recall correctly, mine wouldn't even wiggle. I had thought after the video about drilling a small hole through it, and then drilling a drywall screw into the hole to use to pull it out.

You aint stupid my guy, rust makes EVERYTHING a pain in the ass, not your fault. You have to remember there's a probably an o-ring that's fully dried up in between in there seized and locked in there too and you're technically trying to pull the part out the o-ring. It simply takes a while even for newer cars man just a PITA!

Probably your problem started when that freeze plug started losing fluid, causing water-antifreeze to get into the wiring, and also rusted that sensor in place. New sensor will probably fail as well, till you address the freeze plug problem.

Well as I said in the video, I replaced the cam sensor first (video posted, see Durango playlist) and it fixed mine- but this is the video for the CRANK sensor. You say he replaced the cam sensor for a cam sensor code, yet you are on a video talking about and attempting to replace the CRANK sensor. So which one did he actually replace? I can't remember what exact code I had, but if I didn't mention it in this video, then I definately did in the other. Because if it was specifically a cam sensor code, then he should have been replacing the cam sensor no? But the way you talk and the fact that you are watching this video makes me think you are saying he replaced the crank sensor even though you said cam. Again I don't know what code you had and can't remember what my code was without watching the videos, but it was something that led me to believe it could be either sensor and I just got lucky that it was the cam sensor and not the crank sensor in this video. As for whether the truck is done for, if the timing chain only skipped 1 or 2 teeth it's probably ok and just needs the timing chain fixed. But if it skipped several teeth or if the chain broke completely, then yes the engine is probably ruined. The timing chain skipping does not mean you should automatically scrap it though, because again it depends on how bad it skipped. He should be able to see if there is damage with a bore scope down the cylinders to see if the valves hit the pistons. You might want to get a second opinion if you don't want to scrap it, but replacing the timing chain will be costly even if that IS an option...

Sadly yes. I have bought cheap wheel bearings that didn't last a year, alternators that didn't last a year, batterys that didn't last 90 days, and crank and cam sensors that didn't last 1 month. The cheap stuff is always a gamble when it comes to these components, and I have lost more than I've won when gambling- and I hate having to fix stuff twice. Buy once, cry once.
