Dragonsteel, which you’re holding now, is a good book-but, like a lot of my work during that era (1990's), is erratic at the same time. The various parts of it never quite clicked together. Despite my subversions, it played into a little too many of the fantasy tropes of the ’80s and early ’90s for my taste. It just didn’t quite land.
This book exists in a strange half-canon state. A lot of the lore is still relevant-indeed, though during the writing of Elantris the Cosmere was unformed, by Dragonsteel I had a lot of the ideas in mind that would eventually get used in Mistborn and become full canon. You could call this the first real Cosmere work.
However, I’m still proud of this book. Rough though the writing is, nascent though the ideas may be, the ambition is there-and the seeds of what I would become as an author, sprouting alongside the seeds of what would become the modern Cosmere.Once I hoped this would be the book that made me famous. Today it is but a curiosity. Fortunately, it is an interesting one. I hope you enjoy your first trip to the planet Yolen.

It is the only way I can mediate. Running outside, audiobook, and a semi strenuous jog = happy me. I’ve covered ~1000 miles by foot listening to the cosmere, and then i did it again. There is something supernatural about that combination. Some sort of investiture must be accessed and used during these events, no other explanation lol.

It’s seems like the parallel between this books plot and Way of Kings is quite great . Felt like I was reading an earlier revision. Though I was sad how the book leave so much to be desired. Really wish there was a second to complete the story. Love Topaz! The twist great! Honestly this was one of my favorite books till I got to the ending. This is worse than My Name is Earl’s cliff hanger. But thank you Brandon for gifting us with this treasure. I believe we all really appreciate all you do. That being said my overall score is around 8.26

@@davispearce6000 well, I haven't finished it yet. My comment wasn't on whether you had rated it differently than me or not, just on the fact that 8.26 is an interesting number for a rating. Not a huge deal, I just found it somewhat amusing.

@@lamborn3D Well I based it off of 4 criteria and then gave each a weight. That was the weighted average that I came up with. Just figured to round it to the hundredth decimal place.

In future I suggest downloading onto google drive and that way you can have it on your phone and It works super well even if you're using your phone for other things it wont auto turn off like some things do. :))

Just finished part 1. I thought it was pretty good. Better than expected. I could see brandon releasing this today with a few revisions. The only problem i had was chapter 4. The one where jerick is on a boat with the king and topaz. It was an extremely boring chapter. It should have been cut as the chapter doesn't set up anything that others couldn't. Also a timeskip would have created more intrigue into how jerick is feeling and how the king feels about the situation

Fun fact: Did you know that reptiles, despite not feeling love like humans do, can still form unique bonds with their owners? That’s why at 52:00 Master was actually probably right in saying that they cannot feel love due to them very likely being based of our reptiles that live on this world!

Hi guys. I never read a single Sanderson book (because I am still finishing WoT), although I really really want to. Is this where I should start? Will I miss important stuff by starting here? Should I start with the mistborn saga or the way of kings saga or another book? This looks amazing but I dont want to mess up the order. Thanks :)

Hey. This ISNT the place where you should be starting with Sanderson. In fact, you should come here when you have read everything else set in the 'Cosmere'. Mistborn is a nice place to start with Sanderson (so is Way of Kings, but Mistborn is better to start offf)

I think you misunderstood that part. He never said that Dragonsteel wasnt real, only that it didnt grow on a Dragons body, but in the pools at the Shattered Plains. 55:21

He wrote this back in college for his thesis. Never released. I believe he plans to rewrite it in the future. Its considered the beginning of the cosmere but it's not Canon. Well have to wait a while for the actual Canon rewrite. But this is a cool early look at where it all started. Similar to the previously released way of kings prime which was an early look at stormlight before it became what it is today.
