I made the mistake of reading Mistborn first and thinking “ah, era 2 is finished, mid as well read that too!” Let me tell you, I gotta go back and reread it because too much cosmere for me 😂 so far those are the only books I’ve read, but era one is my favourite trilogy of all time so I have hope for the others

They did put a little of something personal in the knife fight at the end, but it's quite subtle. Paul being hit in the abdomen allowing him to give the killing strike is an echo of his fight against Gurney in the first movie. It doesn't land very well thought. Still, I can be completely wrong and it's an accidental similitude.

I skipped almost all of the Marvel movies (Didn't even watch the first 2 Avengers until that point) and only went to watch Infinity War in cinema because a friend wanted to go. It was good enough for me to watch the other movies after that and it didn't take away from the experience at all. I mean I'm still not sold on the Thor movies, but Winter Soldier is nearly a perfect movie so thanks friend. What I want to say is: Maybe the MCU isn't the best example here.

I think it's more of a mentality problem. Because in truth, having seen Thor Ragnarok and GotG2 actually decreased the value of Infinity War because it's a movie that is nowhere near as good and it sacrifices the unique aspects of the previous installments for the sake of a crossover. And often it's just minor stuff. Like, I remember when people like cinemasins complained that you have to watch Agents of Shield to get Age of Ultron or Winter Soldier, but the integration was so one-way that they later spun off the show into its own universe with zero consequences for the storyline of either continuity.

I would love it if Brandon chose Daniel's tattoo, and it's some symbol Brandon and Isaac made that we have never seen before, and he just RAFOs what it means, just saying it's a cosmere symbol.

I think the big issue is Paul's hesitance. It's crucial to the story, but you can't do that properly in a movie.

1 of the probs is that each movie that comes out has to found by the consumers/viewers. Is it going to be in theaters? Which streaming service will have it 1st? Where can I find it now? Why is the movie I want to see on a subscription service I've never heard of, before?

People learned to read and eventually they realized they’re just stories. Film was invented and people realized they’re just stories. People learned to speak and the first thing they did was invent story. Times change but people keep coming back to story.

The only reason the heel turn doesn’t work for me is because Paul’s first son doesn’t die in an attack. To me in the novel that was the catalyst that sent him south. That was the moment the story changed.

I think what you are seeing is two-fold. 1. Many changes from the death of DVD to cable going away to availability to be readily entertained has really changed the risk/reward in the film industry destroying a great deal of what can be made and still be profitable, making it harder to take chances on a lot of films, which has changed how a lot of films are funded, and not always for the better. 2. Activism and social justice on social media has taken over the voices of the audiences, effectively turning entertainment into politics. Unfortunately, political messaging isn't entertaining, so there really isn't entertainment in the industry anymore. The next big movie has less entertainment value now than a video on KZfaq, so there's no real incentive to see these movies at all. In an age where people have become sad memes of themselves competing for attention and validation on social media promoting their messages and seeking validation, movies are now largely the same annoying attention seeker on social media that even when you agree with them, they're so annoying you don't want to engage. This has rapidly accelerated the "wait for it to come on streaming" mentality, where movies, which now cost more to watch than they used to cost to own, do not bring enough of anything to the table that audiences feel like they can't wait to see them.

Another thing that's happening to the gaming industry too is they have become so expensive to make. So it's harder to take risks now amd everyone just makes the same thing over amd over again with the same formulas and cliches that we have alredy seen 1500 times.

I would disagree for one very simple reason. Most people see trailers first, and primarily, on KZfaq before the trailer ever dreams of making it to a theater. If anything they’re getting more exposure than ever before. The main reason movies are suffering is because the writing is atrocious. Too many people have been burned too often, and as a result the audience is unwilling to extend Hollywood the benefit of doubt any longer.

My favorite part of Dune 2 was when they changed it from Paul spending years with the Fremen to he becomes their messiah in like 3 weeks. And also how they changed it from the Baron having a plan for Arrakis to Feyd sends ships to shoot at a big rock. It really helped to sell his genius

The movie industry is floundering because every studio only ever employs formulaic broad spectrum luke warm garbage writing designed to be accessible to the dumbest person in the room and be appealing to the widest general audience all while simultaneously being as inclusive and non-offensive as possible. Hardly anything original, risky, complicated, patient or thoughtful anymore. Nothing challenging, nothing meaningful. Every genre is infected with remakes, predictable tropes, and low iq handholding plots.

Nah I have to disagree. That may be a factor but it also could just be that media today is just absolute garbage. Too many cooks in the kitchen. Too many different special interested parties influencing storylines. And too much retreading old ground because there's too much risk aversion. Went to see ALIEN 1979 last month and it was a packed theater. Hopped over to visit my friends in another theater and it was empty save for my friend group.

Regarding the pronunciation of either Harko-nnen and Har-Conan, as put forth here... There is an inbetween version. You simply have to leave out the implied hyphen, so "konnen" becomes one part, so it sounds more smooth like the second version "Har-Conan", but still credits the double n, which slightly speeds up the last part (but stays slightly longer on double n). Or separate "Har" and "konnen" (instead of "harko" and "nnen"), more like in the second version, but speed up the double n. Or don't put all the emphasis on "Har", but put some on the "nn" also. (These are all the same...) This way it's more similar to a Middle or Northern European word, like Dutch or Danish or whatever, which I think it looks like.

I don't think it's appropriate to call it a "heel turn" in the movie, or it doesn't come across like that. It's much more nuanced. Obviously it isn't a fairy tale, but from his perspective, what has really changed? Aside from his way of talking or "rhetoric" in a way? All the deeds are straightforward still from the start. I think you skip some of the debate there by going fully into "he's the villain" or "it's a heel turn" mode. And yes, I've known about all the intentions and meanings in advance about an "Anti-Messiah" story and so on. I think to make that more clear we get the third movie (like there was another book for it), but so far it's just subtly "tragic" or "realistic" - and foreboding - but not very twisty. Would he have imagined it in any way different from when he had to flee into the desert? Apart from the "rhetoric" or politicking with the Fremen (which to his credit is about as sincere as one can hope), I don't think so. We still don't really see the bad part aside from "oh, isn't life a pain" or "war sucks" and all. The Chani argument also isn't that strong, as she's just a skeptic of religion, it doesn't even materially impact what happens or in particular, what he wants to do... Imagine he would have done it without religion. So..? That makes no difference in this story. Chani would have given him different looks. So...? I think the discussion is lacking a material level, or rather it is completely in the preaching mode, or "this is what it means", outside of the factual arguments mode. And in consequence, it is too simplistic in its terminology. We are still more in the "foreboding" currently... And "life won't be pretty" and all, but we are not in the villain territory just yet. (Let's not even think about how and why it started - which got a very straightforward response -, but have you even seen the guy who slowly burned one of our friends alive out of pure sadism shortly before the counter-attack? Even though it wasn't shown on screen... Among many other pointless murders? That's bad stuff, eh. I'm not into relativising that sort of thing. Like turning against the one who got rid of the torturer and mawkish for the latter. It has a sickly stickiness to it.)

Great topic, I was underwhelmed. Largely bored, in fact. A lot of it could be from some TV episode. Landscapes are a rare sight in it, and it feels less coherent than the first one. I found the ending of the first one actually quite impressive in how it was handled and its elegance (the particular scenes in the second one which tried a similar approach fell short in comparison I thought). There were great visuals and great tension and drama in the first one. However the second one feels separated into sections, which sometimes may stand out for their look, but in essence are still pretty thin. Obviously a lot rests on the finale and its viusal impact and finally the tense duel choreography.
