Adobe always recommends starting your work with a Production if you feel you need the added benefit. But sometimes, you may have a single Project that you need to convert to a Production. This video will show you the steps necessary to do this if the need arises.

Well Karl..this video may only have 957 views..but let me tell you...this video has absolutely changed my Video production workflow for years to come...one of the most useful videos in the history of watching tutorial videos etc..I had this gigantic project..it had slowed to a crawl...had entered 'crash city'..and after hearing about this production concept in a Premiere FB group..your video turned it into reality. Thank you so much!! Awesome! Massive Productions fan now..and so many stories can now be told. Thanks!

Thanks Karl...I'be got this gigantic project I've been working on for several years now..with several stories...sequences by the hundreds...footage...while I've tried to keep it organised...it has just ballooned in size. It now takes around 30 minutes top open! Thanks for your video as I try to get my head around how best to restructure this into a production to hopefully make it more lean!

This was a massive help. Currently converting a project into a production on a tv show and this out of all the tutorials was the one I needed. Thank you!

Thank you - this helped me realize why when I was making selects my editor project was filling up with media - this showed where I missed a step in migrating a project into production. Saved me a future heart attack and headaches :)

This is great! We're starting out with Productions, so we absolutely need to convert so many related standalone projects into a Production (or a few!). Do you recommend a naming convention for the folders that contain not-to-be-messed-with Productions folders vs. the usual drive organization folders? What do people to with folder names to make the distinction?

This was so helpful! thank you. What advice would you give for creating backups? i usually create back up two ways, i work on OWC hard drives so i create mirror the drives every so often and everyday after i work i usually create a copy to add to my desktop and dropbox of the premiere project. with premeire productions would i simply copying the entire productions folder and saving it to the desktop or dropbox?

Great series on Productions!! Just wondering if there is a different workflow in a Production when you are using proxies and then reconnecting to the original media etc. Thanks!!!

Hey Karl. .. is it appropriate to use this when you aren't including more editors into your workflow? What if it's only me and I'm editing KZfaq videos for let's say 1 client. Most times I copy a lot of assets from the previous project, like zooms/text animations/vfx into my most recent project in order to expedite my workflow. Would a production be better for me over working on a normal project?

Just started binging your series on Productions. Thank you for that! Incredibly hard to find good info on it, surprisingly. Sorry if you answered this already in one of your videos, but what do you recommend: a whole season of (sports) events footage that I keep referencing over and over for different projects. I usually make stringouts with different parts of the events in different timelines What's best? One project with all media (over 1TB), or a project with each event separately? Knowing that a stringout can have from a few to all events linked to it. Thanks for any insight! 😊

Productions work best with multiple small projects, instead of a small number of large projects. It's not the drive size - it's the number of clips that makes a difference. If your footage is mostly long takes of a full sporting event, a single project may be appropriate. If you have thousands of clips, I'd recommend breaking it up in a logical way, like per-event, per-shoot, etc. You can keep your string outs in the same project as the clips, but make a new project for your full edits. Keep your backups of the main sequences in a separate ARCHIVE project, as they can bog down an edit. (okay to keep 3-5 older sequences in the same project, but don't keep more than 5-10 in the project with the active edit. Move them into a separate project. )

That makes sense! Thank you so much for getting back to me. I think a Production will make a lot of sense for my workflow and will give it a try this season. Thanks again!

I may have missed it if it was in one of the videos, but in a scenario where you have to deliver a project to a client is there a best practice for doing that? I tested this with project manager and found that the resulting project didn't add media to the bin, and it caused an issue with audio that was in a multicam clip placed into a sequence. We got it sorted out but it was a little bit clunky to accomplish.

Super super super helpful, thanks! Is there any adaptation to this process (or thinking about organization of the new production) when there are two or more projects being consolidated into one production?

Hey thanks for this. I’m using 24.2.1 and it doesn’t seem to want to move the footage only copy. Should I be cutting from the old project to the new production project? Do I need to redo everything I’ve done if I’ve been copying please help thanks!

This my situation. The documentary project is all located in a single project that was initiated in 2017 and now needs to be moved into a Production Project, etc.

how have I not seen this production pipeline!!! I have a question regarding setting up PRODUCTIONS template which contains default building blocks. This would have setups for Pre-Mapped custom locations. Could we then duplicate this at folder level then simply rename the title at folder level and .prodset level?
@KarlSoule

One way to streamline and "templatize" some organization is to create a series of blank folders and subfolders. Then, use the menu command "File - Open Production" and point at the top folder of the template. Premiere will give a message that says something like "This folder is not a Production - do you want to convert it to a Production?" Click Yes, and it'll open as a Production, keeping all the folder names and subfolders intact. I am hesitant to recommend using folders with existing projects - you're better off importing these after it's converted into a Production. This will ensure that the existing projects are assigned a unique ID number.
