014 - Hints 'n' Tips - Peco Wagon Boxes

Welcome to Ian's N Gauge channel!
For this video I thought I'd start what will probably be the first of an occasional series of hints and tips as I progress the build of Shelfington.
So, what tips can I possibly have about wagon boxes?
Well, you’ll just have to watch to find out…
If you've just got back into the hobby after a long break, then please let me know how you've found the experience.
Alternatively, if you're an old hand at modelling in N gauge, then please impart your wisdom, and point me in the right direction, especially if you see me making a mistake or heading for disaster!!!

I cut a couple of little bits of foam, the spongey type, and stick it in the space between the top of the wagon and top of the box... It works for me, but only because (for now) I've only got a handful of wagons.

Clever Ian - very clever. I'd suggest you invest in stock boxes which come with foam inserts. They will hold all your wagons securely. As for the boxes the rolling stock came in I have mine in plastic crates up in the loft and out of the way. Food for thought Ian 🤔 cheers Euan

Thanks Euan! I've not really investigated stock boxes, as I don't have a huge amount of stock yet! However, they're definitely something I'll look into in the future! I'm storing all of my original boxes in Really Useful Boxes at the moment - and they're really useful!! The problem is that I've got so many things that need to be bought, and my funds aren't limitless unfortunately, so I'm concentrating on stuff I need to get the track laid! Thanks for the suggestion though, I'll put them on my 'stuff to consider in the future' list! All the best, Ian.

The solution I have is to buy Dapol wagons, as good packaging is an essential part of any rolling stock.

Hi Graham, yes, I have a number of Dapol and Graham Farish wagons too, which are great! However, you can't beat Peco when it comes to putting a lengthy train of wagons together cost effectively! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian As Euan has mentioned there are A4 sized 'stock boxes' available fairly cheaply (there were around £10 per box pre pandemic), both from ebay and some of the shows around, I know they are usually at the TINGS event in September. They have foam inserts which can be moved around for various types of wagons (or coaches etc). Have a shop around though.

Thanks Peter! I'll definitely look out for them, although at the moment I can't really justify the cost, as I haven't got a lot of stock, and my funds are currently targeted at things I need for getting the track laid and wired up! All the best, Ian.

That's a neat idea. Not sure if the top magnet is needed, as the bottom one will fix to the steel weight through the chassis body without it. It might be worth trying to keep the polarity of the magnets consistent across boxes, so you wont find you have to match the wagon to the box with matching polarity. However, I find it not really worth the hassle of boxing up wagons in individual boxes.

Thanks James! The top magnet is definitely needed, or at least it is with the strength of the magnets I'm using! Yes, keeping track of polarity is a good idea! I'm always putting stock back into boxes, which I'll have to continue to do until I have a big enough layout to leave everything out, or invest in some stock boxes! I've got more important things to spend my modelling money on at the moment though! All the best, Ian.

@@iansngauge Stock boxes are nice, but unless you are transporting them somewhere, sticking them in something like a shoebox when not in use is fine, and saves the hassle of loading them all in individual boxes.

An ingenious solution Ian which will do what you need while you need to focus money on other things than stock boxes. Eventually you will find unpacking and packing the stock in boxes a pain when trying to form a train. Along with others I use stock boxes. I get mine from Ten Commandments being a local company to me just across the Forth in Fife (trying saying that after a few drams). They provide both a really useful box (with two sizes) and the pluck and pick foam inserts. But they are not cheap and when funds are needed on other things getting them can indeed wait. Stephen

Thanks very much Stephen! I definitely agree that packing and unpacking the stock boxes is a real pain - although not as much as it was since I've discarded all of those flimsy plastic loops!!! I'll take a look at those boxes in time, but like you say, I've got plenty of more important calls on my available funds for the time being! All the best, Ian.

Hello from Belgium, starting on my first n gauge layout myself, after spending 2 years in the pandemic being taunted by model railway videos on youtube.the way graham packages are called blister packs if I remember correctly

Hi Ian, good tips video but I must admit I store my stock of locos and rolling stock on larger stock boxes. However I do keep my Farish and Dapol boxes for a later date but bin the Peco ones as I had the same issue as you but did not take it further than the bin 🤣🤣 Cheers Gary

Hi Gary, thank you! Yes, as others have said, stock boxes are definitely the way to go, especially if you have a large collection of stock! I just don't have enough stock yet to warrant the cost, and have plenty of other stuff to spend money on at the moment! I don't blame you for chucking the Peco boxes in the bin, I've had that thought on more than one occasion! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian. I guess it depends on the size of your layout and/or fiddle yard (if you have one) as to whether you put your wagons away after use. If you do put them away, then the magnets seem to be a good idea. It would have been nice if you had included a link for the magnets you bought.

Hi Paul, I don't have anywhere other than the boxes to store my rolling stock at the moment, as I'm still building the layout! I've had the wagons in and out of the boxes dozens of times over the past month or two as I've taken them out to run them around a simple loop, or to photograph them! I dream of having a fiddle yard when I get the first part of the layout built, but that's way off in the future! The magnets are available on Amazon, just search for "rare earth magnets" or "neodinum magnets" and hundreds will pop up! All the best, Ian.

Why did you use 3 magnets? Why not just put one on the base of the wagon and 1 on the base of the plinth? I am just curious?

The gap between the base of the plinth and the top of the wagon bed was simply too far for the magnets to hold on securely. Maybe larger magnets would have done the job, but the three little ones work well enough for me! Cheers, Ian.
