I'm enjoying your N Gauge videos and it is giving me the inspiration to run my own N project in parallel albeit as temporary Unitrack layouts at the present time. I do really like the Kato 4 wheel electrics and I'm picking up a few Peco wagon kits each time I'm close to a local model shop (which is usually Trains 4U in Peterborough) although I'm happy to pay a tenner for painted versions of the pipe and tube wagons in various liveries. Looking forward to warmer weather then I can break out the airbrush to paint the wagon kits. Freelance-ish is the way to go for me too and I can enjoy running stuff rather than agonising over prototype practice 🙂

Fantastic to see your efforts are being rewarded by companies noting that you give fair reviews on everything. That wee bridge kit looks an excellent addition for any warehouse complex. As for those wagons, blimey they are terrific! Such great value with those Japanese twin sets, but even the Peco ones are decent value, not least because they clearly paint up well. Love it mate, truly a budget railway when you can buy new stuff like that! The N lure is getting stronger I can tell you! 😂👍🍀🍻

Back in the 90's I put together a few of the Peco wagons when I deployed to Germany and Hungary. They were inexpensive and provided a break and relaxation from military duties. Best of all, they didn't take up much space in my luggage!

I was part of the NATO Implementation Force following the War in the former Yugoslavia. As a USAF Captain I filled an O4 billet and worked out of Taszar Air Base, Hungary as a liaison to the Hungarian Oil Company. We inspected the fuel bought for NATO and used in their operations. I saw firsthand what a modern civil war looks like. I did have the opportunity to rail-fan the MAV (Hungarian Railway) and as part of my duties inspect tank wagons carrying our fuel. I didn't see much of the rail system in Bosnia or Croatia other than crossing tracks. Much of the area was mined and I traveled solo in civilian clothes. I had my camera, POL Tech Order Manuals, and side arm. Whilst there I learned enough of Hungarian and Serbo Croat to get by. It was a great learning experience.

These wagons look good for that price, new stuff is often quite expensive. Tomytec/Tomix also have nice items I bought some used a while back but they look like kits as some parts were loose in the box. Nothing that a bit of glue won't fix though 😄

What I love about the Kato wagons is that they have metal wheels. You just don't get that anywhere else. They are such good value. I have a number of American outline Atlas wagons and they annoyingly all come with plastic wheels which I don't like.

I have bought some Japanese rolling stock in N, Kato, but also a Greemax DMUs and a Tomix diesel engine, and I can vouch for the excellent quality/price ratio : cheap but excellent construction, all motorized engines have flywheels and the motors are top notch. If you want something excellent at a more than decent price, it's the way to go.

Great video as always. Any interest in some videos about budget DCC? Costs have plummeted in the past couple of years. I recently assembled a DCC command station for £14 based on three arduino boards. Took under 30 minutes and no soldering needed. Non-sound DCC loco decoders are about £10 used or £15 new. Means multi-train operation is now inexpensive, plus the reliability benefits of constant high DCC track voltage. Hornby's new HM7000 sound decoders can be found for £50 which is a complete game changer. Cheapest sound decoders were previously at least £100.
@BudgetModelRailways5 ай бұрын
I've still no desire to do DCC, sorry. It adds nothing that I need or want, and even at £15-50 a loco it still means it's more expensive than DC, plus the constant worry of frying a DCC loco which does not happen with DC
@eurovnik5 ай бұрын
@@BudgetModelRailways thanks for the reply. That's true that it'll always be slightly more expensive. Never fried a decoder myself so I haven't ever thought about that. For me the main benefits of DCC are the playability especially with children - lights, sound and the ability to operate a freight and passenger train simultaneously on the same layout.
@BudgetModelRailways5 ай бұрын
I can run two trains on the same layout with DC using isolating points. But I can see the appeal for young children

Now I got curious what the covered wagons sell for in Japan. It turns out RG Rokko sells a pair for 1280 yen, that's £6.80.
@BudgetModelRailways5 ай бұрын
Sounds a good deal, international shipping to Traintrax only added about £2 so a lot cheaper than buying direct from Japan, especially if you get caught for import duty which is very common, it's why I stopped buying from Japan
@mrp30775 ай бұрын
@@BudgetModelRailways I'm usually buying a big pile of stuff every 3-6 months or so. Buying a single item from a store will have to wait until I'm physically visiting Japan. :)

Rapido is standard for Japanese model trains.
@mikeelliott27365 ай бұрын
@@BudgetModelRailways Ah, thank you, that explains it. Unfortunately (??) I run US outline in N and all my rolling stock is at least 20 years old, so it has Rapido couplings. I cannot use Kato for that reason. Bit of a shame really. Their track system is wonderful though.
