A never before heard interview with Alex Van Halen from 1980.
In the interview Van Halen talks about:
• Van Halen days before being signed
• Working with Ted Templeman.
• The best heavy metal band he ever saw play live
• The future of Van Halen
• And more...
Show Note: In the interview, Marc asks if it's true that Van Halen has in their rider that there are to be no brown M&Ms backstage. It wasn't until years later that David Lee Roth revealed the real reason behind their no brown M&Ms rule.

@@demonicsweaters obviously you don't quite understand the meaning of "underrated"...I LOVE Alex...but in the professional music talk world he is NEVER brought up in the talk of greatest drummers list when he should be!! But it's true...oh Neil Peart this or john Bonham that, etc...other than the fans, he never got the critical acclaim he certainly deserved, hence "underrated".
@demonicsweaters

@@phoenixrising-theglencampb330 That is completely incorrect. Drumeo has a video called "The Genius Of Alex Van Halen", Modern Drummer recently did a multi-drummer tribute series to him, he is CONSTANTLY regarded as one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. I've been playing drums since I was 10, and have seen, read, heard about him non-stop since that time. He's been on the cover of Modern Drummer and Drums magazines many, many times, people constantly marvel over his snare sound and unique style. If there is one thing he definitely is NOT, is underrated. He was in one of the biggest selling rock bands of all time and is one of the few drummers that is actually a household name.

Heard in an interview with David Lee Roth that the brown M&Ms was a quality check in their contract to verify if the venue / promoter actually read it. If they saw brown M&Ms more than likely other more impotent details were missed. Pretty ingenious.

Alex never played the drums. It was all fake. Phil Collins was the real Van Halen drummer. Alex pretended to play on stage and Phil was behind the curtain playing the real drum kit. What`s even weirder is David Lee Roth was playing most of the lead guitar parts on the first three albums until Eddie learned to copy it. They had to build a guitar Eddie could figure out how to play with his unusually tiny hands. Frank Zappa wrote nearly all the songs. When he died the band was finished. It`s all in Sammy Hagar`s book.

Those radial horns in his kick drums... many people think those were there strictly for looks. But what they don't know is that they actually served a purpose. I've noticed reading articles and interviews that Alex sometimes comes off as a bullshit artist... the thing is, is he does it on purpose. Either out of fun, or to throw readers off. A good example of this is his "church organ" kit from 1982... he explains in the article that the organ pipe design in the front acts as pitch pipes like what you would see in a cathedral church... He then says... hahaha... depending on the venue size, acoustics etc. will determine which pitch pipe the mic is placed in. That way optimal sound and output is delivered at the pipes frequency, which is in line with acoustic readings they get from the venue LOL... Now, there is no way such a thing would have that much of an effect on the way that drum sounds. I think he was just having fun with the interviewer. Perhaps, he came off as being naieve and would believe it coming from Al... and, of course, there are those drummers out there who would read that and actually try it. And all the while claiming to get the desired effects that were nothing more than Al's sarcastic make believe bullshit 😄

Great interview. Interesting comments about the industry. If you cannot trust live performances, why would you trust anything on a record? It is hard to know what goes on behind the scenes. Interesting comments on art, very down to earth take on what art means. There is no sharp line between high and low art, popular and classical music. Classical education means learning from past achievements. Although at one point it is confused with learning theory. What education really means is not having to reinvent the wheel. People have been making music for a long time.

All that musical training DID have a good influence because it makes you aware of musical form, disciplines your understanding, makes you aware of what you're doing and how you're doing it. Hooks, all that. Like your classical training influences your playing. What I mean is that nothing is wasted. No knowledge is useless, because it disciplines your mind. Of course hard Rock and heavy metal is art. Anything that moves people is art.

I mentioned this once, but can't find the comment. It's worth mentioning again though... at -21:53 Alex talks about their basic easy to understand lyrics. I honestly think he's referring to Neil Peart and RUSH... especially the 2112 album... long time RUSH fans say that Van Halen was known to criticize RUSH for being "unreasonably complex", and that Dave would make fun of their album covers But seeing how RUSH pulled a 40 plus year history racking up tons of albums and live albums... you can't even count how many they've done. And all the while there was never animosity within the group... basically, Dave should be eating his words regarding RUSH these days. Back then, thry likely thought that RUSH would never be able to adapt to the change in times znd would fade away... he was wrong about that

Over 15 years from the time of this interview. But for some reason, he really wanted to distance himself from LA. Saying they’re not from LA. And they just moved 10 years ago, ha ha. Then he talked about putting up flyers all over LA. They created their style in LA, wrote all their music in LA. Made their starred in LA, all their careers to LA. I guess even someone in a big band like Van Halen, wants to sound kind of cool and act like they are outsiders. Alex and Ed were a little defensive, always felt they had something to prove. And I’m glad they did, and had great lives. 😝🤘🏻🎸🇺🇸🥁🔥

I remember back in the days of MySpace, there was an Alex Van Halen account that, honestly, I think was legit... in fact, Valarie's vedifices account would post little pictures saying shit like "Have a good day", which to me said it was legit, but also kind of low profile. But he did post on it in 2007 during the tour some asking what everyone thought of the new shows they were doing... Anyway, there was this chic I remember always seeing her post those animated photos to his. She was some kind of model in LA. What was so funny was she posted an animated photo of a digital pager that had a message that scrolled across like the pagers did... it said "ALEX VAN HALEN IS MY NIGGA... ALEX VAN HALEN IS MY NIGGA..." hahaha... For some reason it was so damn funny seeing that scrolling across non stop in large digital letters... probably because it was hard to imagine Al being referred to as "MY NIGGA" hahsh

I think Alex no longer wants to drum without his brother playing guitar and Wolfgang no longer wants to play VH songs without his dad. Wolf said in Oct 2020 when his dad passed that VH is disbanded. Sammy Hagar and Mike are carrying on the VH torch and maybe Dave as well even though he wanted to retire from music. The old farts have to quit eventually. Aerosmith is retiring after final tours. So, as of now there is nobody with the last name of Van Halen playing Van Halen songs right now. I think Eddie's passing was the final nail in the coffin for the band. He was the sound of VH with his unique guitar playing. Their final concerts with Roth as lead singer again were in October 2015. Eddie had planned a reunion tour with Sammy and Mike coming back but his passing nixed that. VH was inactive for about 5 years before Eddie's passing. And there was going to be a VH tribute concert to honor Eddie but Wolf said dysfunction among surviving former VH members nixed that as well. Wolf played some VH songs from the early 80's at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert in Sept 2022. He felt that was his closure with VH stuff.

That's something I do all the time, dropping references to certain things... especially when commenting online and the situation presents itself. Its a fun way to see how many people catch them. Plus, references serve as great indicators as to how knowledgeable and big of a fan the person using them is if dropping a comment on an artists page (that's how you get their attention and a response from them for real. Not by the typical "I worship you comments" they've been hearing and reading for decades. And it often works...)
