I've watched many videos like this, and yours is the first to show that the band actually serves a very important purpose in crimping these little connectors. I had many failed attempts because I removed the connector from the band and then tried finding the sweet spot on the jaws. Your method is so much easier!

Great video. I have a different brand set but same basic deal. Other videos are blurry or say I need a thinner crimper to crimp the two sections independently. This is great and I’m now going to go ahead and make my first connector with high confidence that it will just work.

Thanks. This is exactly what I was looking for. I wasn't sure which pliers/jaws were the correct ones for rolling the tabs to bite into the wire. ...don't do this manually... I made my first 5p connector without the proper tool. That was a solid 45 minutes of tedious frustration :-) -Jake

I received the IWISS SN-2549 to do JST-XH connectors a couple days ago but because of where the JST-XH crimp is located it was hard for me to get the connector in there with my fingers. I will be returning it today and getting the IWISS SN-01BM... On a side note It would be great if you did more reviews and tutorials on Radio Control related items and proceedures like crimping and soldering. Again I like the way you explain everything and the way you made the video. Great Job!!!

I have that exact same crimping tool and it was doing an aweful job for DuPont connectors! Now I can see it was never designed for DuPont and that's probably why it was doing such a horrible job. Thanks for video.

Good video tutorial - the ebay link is broken/stale but I was able to search for "900 pcs jst" and found similar kits.

You are lucky that your crimp tool got decent dies. I ordered one (for the "dupont" style connectors) and in what I got the dies are so inaccurate that they just crush the connectors instead of folding the tabs. The dies seem to be cast metal without any further machining. I had seen those dies previously on pictures (they are usually the painted black ones) and imagined that they couldn't work well. That is why picked a more expensive seller who showed grey/shiny metal dies (which are either machined or at least somehow treated after casting) on the product images. Still got the crappy dies. So everyone thinking about getting a crimping tool , watch out for that.

There are a lot of variables that one must take into consideration. For example if you are heavy handed (Breaking things) you want to use the ratchet type. If you have a good feel for things then the manual one will work. The smaller the connector the lighter the incremental squeeze. The quality of the dies is what causes the pin to curl back on itself. If the die are jagged you will not get a good crimp causing you to re-crimp and smashing the connector pin. XH's are large enough that the crimp threshold does not matter. Some of the connector (SH) requires a microscope to set up the crimp. Without it its a waste of time. Those type requires a high end die like Engineer PA series. That last thing you need is your drone flying off into the sun set because you want to prove that a cheap knock off works just as good.

sellers say the SN-28B and SN-48B but its the wrong one. this SN-01BM is the correct one for dupont and jst connectors.

Nice instructable video. I didn't know about these types of connectors until a few days ago. I was looking at crimping methods for connecting LED Strip RGB extension cables together. I would still like to have done it this way although I am not sure how? Instead I am opting to use gel filled butt splice connectors. Can you use these types of connectors cable to cable instead of for circuit boards?

When you say easily fixable at 8:14 what do you do off camera to fix it? Whenever I crimp the insulation too far in like that I've always just had to cut the end of the wire off and start again (also wasting a connector because it's stuck to the wire). Thank you for the video!

I have exactly the same set and all is explained very. However you can leave out the stripping of the wire. This is because during crimping you are piercing through the insulation

So I too got these crimpers but am not having very much success. I believe it is because my pieces are a bit shorter then the ones in your video. The end which must stick out with the tab to keep it in the plastic housing, gets crimped way too easily! I am able to get one successful crimp out of 10! Maybe this is why there are so many included :) But seriously, would you please share where you got your terminals? They definitely have some slight differences from mine - and it appears that you have that extra 1 - 1.5 mm in overall length for your terminal to clear the other side. Thanks, Carrie

I don't use a tool, and solder them, use cutting pliers and long head pliers. A mess but very effective.

Dunno why, but when I do it it just flattens the entire piece of metal.

what's the difference between XH and PH? is it size of crimp? are they compatible?

Half of my wires are broken after crimping, and the rest break as soon as I move the connector a bit

engineering brand ones are much more expensive and don't have the ratchet mechanism
