Excellent video! We are both in our 80's and feel better than ever! We are all about healthy aging. For us eating a whole-food plant-based diet was the key to our reversing life-threatening illnesses. We are doing research for our new healthy-aging advice YT channel to inspire others. Learned a lot here! Thank you.

Your videos are so good, very informative. You should consider many of your transcripts to be put into books in topics that are related. I think it would help many folks even doctors as they are very limited in the training they get. Keep sharing, I am always learning and sharing it. Bless you and yours and your work.

@@DrAndreaFurlan thank-you, Dr. Andrea; I have already started to add some to my routine. Also, realized that because of pets I adopted over last 2 1/2 years(who jump up on the bed for morning snuggling), there has been no room on my bed to do the decades long stretch routine I did before my feet hit the floor, nor the yoga warm-up on the floor, and my body really has suffered. wonderful video! I fully share your approach to illness and have always believed that through training the mind, in many ways, it can be a tool, not just for pain management, but a way to achieve inner balance that leads to peace. When we have peace, everything is easier. Keeping constant peace requires a great commitment to being always present, always aware... But not easy specially if you can not share with other in the same condition... Please, dear Drª Andrea, can you share the link to these therapies online, as well as groups of people with chronic pain, if any? It would be very usefull Thank you once more 🌹🕊️🙏🏽

Mind can make a mountain of molehill and also the converse. The more attention we pay to any pain, the more severe it appear to be. Ignore the pain and it is soon forgotten. Learning new things/ arts / crafts/ languages keeps the mind well occupied and act better than any pain killer. Positive emotions sweep away the negative thoughts about pains. I love your holistic approach in treating people with pain. :)

Nicely done, Andrea, well thought out and well-presented, with good video techniques. Are there more videos in this series? I'm particularly interested in the medication one. (PS - you look great!) I would love to discuss/interview you regarding expansion of the aids you present in this video, we're already in touch on Twitter @CanadaPain, for both my advocacy and the book I'm writing, "Fully Intended Consequences" (copyright). Keep up the great work, it's heartening to know there are doctors out there who truly care, in pain management, and are trying to present support and alternative therapies while not dismissing the pain. This is critical. If only the effective alternatives to medication were covered by OHIP and easy to access. Our health care system needs a complete and total overhaul in meeting patient's needs, starting with reinstating physiotherapy, and providing ACT and MBSR training free of charge. Many of us are already having to choose between medication and food... physio, ACT, even Yoga - a great pain management tool - is beyond a poverty-based budget. Stay safe and healthy in these challenging times, I hope you and yours are all faring well. Thanks again, and keep up the good work. Let's talk. I did not know that what I was doing was ACT but now I see that. I was in a wheelchair because of my pain. Every time I rode past a wall of climbing grips in the gym, where I would hold on to a railing and walk 20 feet 3 times, I thought "Maybe, by the time I am 60, I can take a walk along the south rim of the Grand Canyon." I was 44. I left the wheelchair 18 months later but I held on to my dream. When I was 57, the company I was working for sent me to a conference in Las Vegas, NV. I went early, rented a car, and drove to the Grand Canyon. I took a walk along the south rim and listened to a park ranger explain that only 1% of visitors actually go INTO the canyon. I wondered if I could do that. Back home I went to a trainer I knew and asked if she thought I could ever do a hike into the Grand Canyon. She was certain I could, so I trained for 3 years. Three days before my 60th birthday, my sister and I went with a guided group to the bottom of the canyon where we camped 2 nights. On my 60th birthday, I hiked up the 9+ miles. It was harder than anything I could imagine and I temporarily developed serious asthma/bronchitis due to Mast Cell Activation, but I did it. It showed me that both the journey AND the destination are important to me. I am 73 now and am looking at sustainable options such as yoga or dancing. Yes, I still have the chronic pain. I also have a life. Thank you for your contribution to this field!!

So Dr Furlan how do I use my mind to manage my 24/7 pain at: C3/4 - moderate right neural exit stenosis (contacting right C4) C4/5 - moderate left and mild right neural exit stenosis (contacting bilateral C5). C5/6 - spondylolisthesis, moderate left and mild right neural exit stenosis (contacting bilateral C6). C6/7 - moderate bilateral neural exit stenosis (contacting bilateral C7) C7/T1 - mild bilateral neural exit stenosis (contacting bilateral C8). Multi-level thoracic spine discogenic disease and multilevel facet joint arthropathy. Lumbar spine Diffuse spondylosis/degeneration, most significant at L2/3 and L5/S1 levels Multilevel disc-osteophyte complexes resulting in right L2/3, L3/4 and L4/5 foraminal stenoses. Some increased disc degenerative activity at C5/6 with less-marked disc degenerative activity at C4/5 and to a minimal degree at C6/7. Slight increased activity in the left T2/3 facet joint. Lumber spine - marked increased disc degenerative activity at L2/3 and L5/S1, slight increased activity at right L4/5 and left L5/S1 facet joints. I am sick and tired of the meds that give me side effects. Can I really manage this using mindfulness and CBT. What do you sick about acupuncture? Thank you.

@@DrAndreaFurlan Sure did and it was very helpful. My sane PCP here in San Diego can't prescribe it (though is totally on board) and the highly recommended pot doc told me baclofen was an anti inflammatory, amitriptyline an MAOI inhibitor and gabapentin caused all my problems. It was actually scary and I should have reported her. Started in March and needing less and less as I learn to calm down my nervous system on my own. Was able to drop the tramadol which did nothing anyway. TMI but thanks again!!!

Huh. Does ACT mean you don’t continue pursuing pain managing treatments (meds, surgery, physio, etc) and just accept everything as is, or is pursuing reasonable treatment considered part of the committal bit? Because if not then that seems a bit extreme. Thanks you for your videos, especially the one explaining CRPS. Helped me communicate with my family about my health more effectively.

Dear Sarah, I am glad the videos are helpful. Acceptance is about creating space for emotions, impulses, and feelings that we might otherwise suppress or avoid. This allows us to avoid over-inflating them or wasting too much energy on them so that we can move on more easily. This is a good book to explain what is ACT www.apa.org/pubs/books/4317286

@@DrAndreaFurlan Thanks I am good, I can counsel myself. Realized that it is not my fault. Learned not to respond. Our negative response is what toxic people are looking for. These days I will consider myself as a mere witness of the injustice. Most of the time I won't be able to take any action which is frustrating. Nor could I make any complaint. Only thing I could do is to make sure that their actions will not have an impact on me. There should be provisions in place - escape routes.
