Is all publicity good publicity? Do we want excitement and passion more than polite behaviour? What exactly does it mean to "Bring the game into disrepute"? Let's talk about Asal's behaviour.

After about a week after publication of this video, the general consensus of comments seems to be he was rude. Some commenters support him though. As you may have noticed, I haven't responded to individual comments, except for two right at the beginning, because I didn't want to get into arguments with people. Some points I would like to make though: 1. Just because somebody is young doesn't mean we should accept their behaviour. I believe that this is not a sign of immaturity but a reflection of character and character doesn't change much over time. 2. If he had done exactly what he did AFTER waiting for the let decision and touching rackets with Mr. Coll, that would have been fine for me. However, he may not have heard the let request, but he still should have touched rackets first. THIS could be simply excitement and I feel it's hard to be too harsh over this. 3. I didn't see the match or any of his others, but it seems he is gaining a reputation as a dishonest player. if that is true, and I stress I don't know, then that should be addressed. 4. Some people are talking about other players' bad behaviour. This video was about one incident. If other players have bad behaviour that should be addressed by the PSA too. 5. I find it very interesting that this video has 10% downvotes - clearly simply asking the question about his behaviour upsets people. 6. I would love to create more videos about things that happen on the PSA tour, but I really don't watch it, so that's unlikely to happen. However, I do feel that this topic has raised some interesting and important issues that I will create questions for in the coming weeks. Thanks to everybody who commented.

He’s a cocksure twat and a cheat.. Got to the point where he’s actually injuring players now.. PSA need to fine or ban his antics.. Squash is about more than one player and sportsmanship is everything! Without it there is no sport. kzfaq.infoYjAmnxqjHjg?feature=shared

I come from a rugby background so over-the-top celebrations are an anathema to me. Aside from the obvious safety hazard of a soaking wet t-shirt hitting you in a pandemic, it also speaks volumes of the attitude of the player that would celebrate to this length before acknowledging his opponent. This smacks of pre-meditation and I put my vote for poor sportsmanship.
@BetterSquash

I seen people win Olympic gold medals and have more restraint than this. As you say, different sports tend to have different celebration standards, and if we are not careful this could become a trend.

I think the tshirt being thrown wasn't the issue. It's the way he acted. The decision wasn't made and if I'm not wrong he hadn't even tapped racquets with Coll. And throughout the match he pretended his balls didn't hit the tin when they obviously did. One can be unsure about one or even two but not more and not as clear as those were. And many people were talking about his weird movements on court and blocking. He was disrespectful and rude but not because of the T-shirt part. And you like said in that interview he gave he never apologized to Coll. I didn't finish it either because it was so boring but read the comments and he didn't seem sorry in the slightest.

Hi, I believe he was disrespecful and rude. Squash is a gentleman´s game and you should respect your opponent, the referee and the crowd. I also thought that his manner on court throughout the whole game was bad and the referee could have intervened earlier which might of avoided this outburst at the end of the match.

Yes, squash players have generally been very well behaved, at least compared to other sports. There's no reason why we can't have competitiveness and passion, just in a respectful package.

I think it was fairly disrespectful considering the pandemic and the fact that that match was not completely over because the no-let decision was not called (what would he have done if it was a let/stroke?). If COVID was not a factor and he actually waited, I think his behavior would have been completely acceptable and more justifiable. A bigger question would be if his behaviour across the match was acceptable. Asal seemed to be constantly complaining to the refs and both commentators continually noted that he needs to mature (which I agree with)
@BetterSquash

Yes, as M M said in another comment, it was the whole match that was the main issue and the final T-Shirt incident was just the final straw.

Let me first praise your channel, so many great advices! I think there are four things to this: 1. Is celebrations like that acceptable in general? 2. Is it wise, under the current Corona situation? 3. Was the timing right? 4. Asals general approach to the sport. 1. We might not have seen any squash players throw their shirts and sweatband previously, but there are no lack of celebrations. The French General celebrating after a victory, load screens from some players after winning points... I think emotions are good, and I do not hink the reaction and celebration as such was over the top, but... 2. Under the current Corona situation, it is not acceptable to throw sweaty objects out to the crowd. 3. The celebration took place too early. The match point had not been awarded. Coll had asked for a let, and the celebration should have been held back until the point was called. Before or after tapping Colls racket is a minor thing; we have previously seen other players react emotionally, and the handshake happening after the celebration/reaction. 4. Asal is what I will call a whiner, questioning referees decisions and not accepting his own errors. He very much reminds me of Jonathon Powers when playing Jansher Khan, Hong Kong 1997 final, behaving like a small child. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a5lnmNZ6v7Wqppc.html Hopefully Asal will mature, and play honourable like Faraq, Ashour, and not like Marwan.

Asal is not an ambassador of the sport. His behaviour is one of self-entitlement and attention seeking. Yes, he’s a good squash player but he doesn’t understand sportsmanship. I’ve played squash for over 40 years and love the game BUT when Asal is playing, I don’t have an interest to watch the game. I prefer to watch other respectful players who have a sense of decency and consideration for the other player. He may be a young adult but that’s no excuse. He’s old enough to know better.

Bad sportsmanship, rudeness and cheating is never acceptable............combined with other outbursts, Asal needs a lot of coaching in etiquette..........McEnroe in tennis was censured for his actions..........that's what Asal needs and soon. Hi coach Phil, Really like your KZfaq vids, been watching probably about a year now. Yes his behaviour was acceptable to a point, I think he should have waited for the decision before celebrating, that's my honest opinion - when he pulled off the T-shirt my first thoughts were of "how is he going to play the next point if it's a let?" Then it got me wondering about sport etiquette and would anyone care if he played the next point shirtless? Then I thought we should just all play squash shirtless. Then I reigned it in a bit. Actually for many people, squash has a reputation for being quite straight laced, although I don't think this image does anything to bring in fans. My friend, when I told him I played squash, said to me "Squash?! You mean violent tennis where both players fight it out in a glass ring?" Yup if they were to play on the glass ring a bit I think they'd get more fans. Maybe not gonna have shirtless tattooed players just yet though but who knows? Also I think they should redesign the court surface and shoes to accommodate sweat on the floor, players go down and the vibe us ruined by court cleaning. The F1 drivers have to drive in the wet, why should squash players be any different? Kind regards

@@BetterSquash what asal did was compete, like a real athlete. That's why he's so good. It's something that all the top guys can do, but they don't. Asal's behaviour is normal of sports that actually have a competitive environment present. The pro squash circuit has made squash anti-competitive. Humans aren't so nice and posh in reality, it'd benefit the sport to embrace this fact and embrace an intense competitive environment instead of a circle jerk. Tennis has this, UFC, soccer, MLB, NBA, hockey, basically any sport with any real degree of success does this.

Its relative to the sport. Some sports accept certain celebration as normal. I also think the proximity to the opponent enters the area of taunting. Damn disgusting low life and disrespectful to opponent. Just to win at all costs incldg cheating. This is how their own children will pick up and learn their disgraceful conduct. Another behavior I find disgraceful is after winning a point, some players yell and shout in the direction of the opponent, imo to try to intimidate, rattle and unsettle them mentally; this smacks of no self confidence and poor sportsmanship. Passionate but funny especially if the point got a LET :P Some points which I feel influenced the emotional outburst: 1) Main ref was inconsistent. He dinged Asal for a no-let right at start of game 1 but gave Coll a let for the same situation later in the match (Asal called the ref to be consistent and the video ref overturned the call). Get the feeling the ref was told explicitly to clamp down on Asal before the match 2) He came back against the odds after being demolished in Game 3 and came back stronger in 4 & 5 which is incredible given the physicality of Paul Coll. If anything, he should have called his tin down (ref was blinded and played let). That said I feel that Coll was not inclined to call one of his tins down either (ref called it down correctly). My 2c - squash should have tech to automatically make tin calls and balls out of side line for the bigger tournaments. Also was good to hear that his celebration was a call-out to a Egyptian soccer player battling a debilitating condition.

I believe that the contrast between his behaviour and his squash is so great that is what gets people annoyed. if he were an average pro player, then we might accept it, but he is clearly a future world number one and champion and doesn't need to behave the way he does to win.

I haven't seen him enough, but on court he certainly seemed to always have "issues" with other players.

Can we just concentrate on why england or other countries are getting their ass kicked in squash, rather than Asals or anyone's behaviour. First develop your own squash at least. This is what I hate, you British are going down and down day by day in world squash and you need to improve your players who are on the decline. You should concentrate on developing your players first at least who keep getting their ass kicked by egyptains.

Yes, we could, but it's possible to address multiple issues at the same time. As I said in my previous reply to your other comment, bringing the nationalities of players into the argument. You start "hating" British people expressing an opinion. It's totally true that the Egyptians are dominating squash, but this has nothing to do with Asal nationality, and suggesting it does is nationalism at its worst.

Not to mention you British never even had any good "legends" players in squash besides Nick matthew who was himself very lame and celebrated on wrong moments. Don't name jonah barrington LOL 1930s and don't name James wilstrop who isn't the level of being a legend. So pls focus on developing your players then speak about behaviours. Look at your players George parker is the world's most idiotic players ever to live.

Bringing the discussion down to nationalities doesn't help anybody. From what I have heard George Parker is very unsportsmanlike and should be punished accordingly.

Asal didn't do anything disrespectful. He challenged the calls which he is entitled to, nothing wrong there. He took off his shirt and threw tonly after that the point was reviewed. Many times I've seen players leave the court thinking they have won and called back because of reviews. Thirdly not touching the racquet because he didn't have it. All of these are no big deal. Every player is passionate, people who play squash know how competitive and aggressive this game can get. And finally I abhor and detest as to why should Asal explain himself, he did nothing wrong. Coll is no pushover, beating a champion and that too of Coll's calibre would surely get an extra ounce of adrenalin.

The point wasn’t over. The referee didn’t even said anything about the decision before or during his act of throwing his t. And even if the referee didn’t announced it he had to wait until he shakes or tap his opponent’s racket since the player can call for a review. And the biggest issue in this match was him trying to cheat the points by hitting the tin and trying to act as it was above, blocking, etc. It’s a massive disrespect to the opponent(Coll).

I believe it should have been s stroke against Asal. If a foreign object had fallen off his kit before the point was awarded he would have had the point awarded against him. Nothing to do with respect or bad sportsmanship. Just the rules.

The point wasn't over and that is the key to many people's point of view. While I dislike that kind of display, it was more about not waiting for the referee's decsion.

Should he be fined or sanctioned for throwing his t-shirt into the crowd: A: because of the pandemic and/or B: because there was a let request in progress and this is a code of conduct warning?

Do squash fans watch any other sport? you guys are so stuck up, the guy was passionate. Yes his behaviour is acceptable, showmanship is a part of sports. The pandemic is a non factor because all tournament players were tested.

Yes, squash fans watch other sports, and I don't believe we are stuck up. Perhaps you don't realize that the match hadn't finished. People are upset because 1. during a pandemic, throwing a sweat covered t-shirt into the crowd is disgusting and 2. celebrating before a decision has been made is wrong. Just because somebody has been tested, doesn't mean it's okay to do what he did. Also, I think celebrations in other sports are disrespectful. Being passionate doesn't mean you have to behave is that way.
