Great, hard-fought match that was ended on an error call... Should have at least been a let... Ball came right back at Gohar's feet, El Hammamy was moving into position to hit... Ball was too short for a stroke call, but on the rule of a player being given every chance to hit the ball requiring the non-hitter to clear, this was a no-brainer let call. Not sure what's going on in pro squash reffing these days.

Let at minimum, supposed to have direct access to ball, she did that and got a no let. What was she supposed to do, go around and wait for the ball to maybe bounce twice? You could even say she could have had a stroke. Calling it a No let is a joke.

Gohar was behaving like Asal running down Hammamy at one point.
@ericmachus4290
@ericmachus4290 Жыл бұрын
I thought hammamy was more like Asal on that point. Cleverly stepping right into gohars line. Replay showeed hania stepping right into gohar after hitting the shot. If more players gave asal what gohar gave hammamy maybe asal wouldn’t be such a problem. Poetic justice that gohar gave it right back to her on match point. Asal effect is so corrosive, affecting the women’s game as well. Glad there was less screeching this match tho hammamy kept amping it up and gohar gave it back after the match. If only sobhy would give it a rest too.
@watching99134

No because she was actually trying to get around her (Asal is more about blocking the other person, not running into them).
@ericmachus4290
@ericmachus4290 Жыл бұрын
@@watching99134 yes. You misunderstood. On the first point hammamy stepped right into gohar as she was there to hit the ball. Blocking like asal. On the second point, match point. Gohar was in Hamammy’s way and I agree with Joey B et Al that the match point should have been at least a let in hammamy’s favor. However it must have been karma.

The 'No Let's at 4:12, 5:25, and 6:19 ... they were consistent I suppose, but I didn't like them. Rewarding players for hitting a mediocre shot back to the same area of the court they were in. All had suspect clearing. I could have easily seen all three given as strokes by a different ref.

Imho, Women’s squash has never been in a better place. The standard is incredible. The majority of these athletes are fair, sporting and modest. But much as I want to like Hania el-Hammamy, I just can’t. Yes, to her credit, she has developed a top-notch all court attacking game, her movement is sensational, and quite rightly she belongs in that best-in-the-world category. But so does Mostafa Asal and I can’t bear to watch him any more. Sure, it’s a tough ask to be competitive, fair and modest. Nevertheless, Nour el-Shebini, Ali Farag and many others show how it can be done.

Why would they accept this sport in the Olympics with the massive ambiguities that now exist in the game. When I played (quite competitively and coached for 20yrs) it was a non contact sport, now players are meant to accept contact and play through interference. I know the tin has been lowered but still players should be allowed a clear path to the ball and unless its a winner its a let or stroke. The whole movement pattern of players has changed, when I used to ghost it would be in an arc but that doesn't happen anymore. This was not nice to watch, they are two slim ladies and the only reason there is so much contact is because of the coaches adapting to the rules.
@tonytan5945
@tonytan5945 Жыл бұрын
You’re absolutely correct on all points but unfortunately squash is cursed by the dependence on subjective refereeing. All of this has evolved from the fact squash was starting to get boring to watch and was too much an attritional game from jahangir’s time onward. Those days there were just too many let’s and the rallies went on forever with little change in the score line. Perhaps we’ve gone a little extreme to the other pole now but I think overall it’s better for the game. Nevertheless I sure wouldn’t want someone like asal crashing into my lumbar spine purely to prove to the ref that he can get to the ball and deserves a let or stroke.
@PJ-vj4jb
@PJ-vj4jb Жыл бұрын
@@tonytan5945 It was attritional way before Jahangir, check out the match times in the Barrington era. I think they are trying to make it an Olympic Sport rather than a great sport which it has always been.

Terrible decisions meaning as a player you never know when you can ask for a let or not What were the video refs thinking when reviewing?
