Ptolemy I Soter, a former commander of Alexander the Great turned King and Pharaoh of Egypt, was perhaps the craftiest out of all of Alexander’s Successors. A talented commander and even more brilliant politician, Ptolemy would wield diplomacy and intrigue with a deft hand, founding what would become the longest lasting Hellenistic Kingdom in his nearly 40-year reign.

Glad to have found your channel, will you ever make some specific content about Massilia and the other Green colonies in their region in terms of culture, politics, military and economy?

I've considered it before, but unfortunately there isn't much in the way of information on the place. I might cover it one day as a small episode, but for now my discussion on Pytheas the Explorer remains the most in-depth I ever get on any Massaliote!

One Comment on geography of Egypt. First the prevailing winds in the northern Red Sea is right down its length. Thus it was an easy sail from Egypt to the Indian Ocean but a wind you have to fight to go the other direction. Thus the Camel route from Aden to Mecca to Medina to Jerusalem to Damascus then to the Mediterranean Sea was competitive to the sea route given the lack of water on both coasts, the need to use oars going north for the Red Sea (Tacking against the wind was a dark age invention along with the Keel and Lateen sail). Thus the Red Sea was not used for trade till the invention of the steam ship in the 1800s (through, during the reign of Augustus trade via the Red Sea was done with oars but did not last long, such trade ended after Augustus was dead). Just a comment the Red Sea was a barrier and NOT a trade route for Egypt. The other restriction on Egypt was the First Caracaks (Rapids) of the Nile. That prevented any invading army to March around those rapids not sail down or up the Nile. Thus Egypt was protected from any invasion from the south, Red Sea, of Libya. The only way to invade Egypt was by the Mediterranean Sea (if you have the ships) or from Palestine, provided you have the oxen to haul water over the Sinai as the Army marched to or from the Nile.

The Greeks respected the Egyptian civilization more than any other people's who conquered Egypt. Ptolemaic Egypt was the golden age of Egypt and the Greeks kept the Egyptian civilization and culture and brought it to new heights

@@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess How could Ptolemy have taken Egypt to new heights when the pyramids were already ancient history in his own time? Egypt was already past the prime years when Alexander got there. The Greeks brought absolutely nothing of value to Egypt because they had nothing to offer anyone but death. The Greeks only killed, stole and destroyed. The Romans picked up where they left off.

Octavian destroyed Egypt. Mark Antony knew how corrupt and evil the Roman empire could be, and he didn't want to see the greatness of Hellenic Egypt lost, that was one of the reasons he rebelled against Octavian's plans. The Roman empire only cared about taxes and they wanted to weaken the territories under their claws, while the Greeks only improved Egypt and respected the Egyptian civilization

Agree, romans didn't just destroy Egypt economically and culturally, they destroyed our national identity, replaced our religion our values our language so even after the fall of the Roman empire Egyptians had identity crisis and having hard time trying to know who they are , that the reason we didn't have any Egyptian empire during middle ages because Egyptians didn't have common ground to stand on and till today they don't know what they identify themselves either Egyptian or arab

Just dumb. Greeks oppressed the natives...duh. Roman's oppressed them, the Arabs oppressed them,...duh, I suppose some here think that being overtaken by another people should be for no benefit of the conquerors and their effort and sacrifices..😂😂😂... duh. And now, ... I would quit the Egyptian Jersey and join another team, bad bad track record..

@@ahmedmahmud4238 That is incorrect. The Greeks did not oppress Egyptians. When Alexanders campaign reached Egypt the egyptians were already resisting the Persian empire, and welcomed the Greeks in fact to help them fight off the Persian annexation The Greeks who stayed in Egypt like Ptolemy respected the Egyptian native customs and religion, and adapted themseves to the Egyptian culture. and Hellenic Egypt is widely considered a second golden age for Egypt It was the Romans who destroyed Egypt, by using Egypt as just another foreign land under their empire to charge taxes. At first with Julius caesar the Egyptians were respected for the most part, but after Augustus took over the Empire everything started downhill, and Egypt fell to the Arab caliphate little later The problem with that is that Egypt lost their original culture and civilization and basically became Arabs in terms of customs
